This is a brief clip showing what happens to a ferrofluid when a magnet is passed close by. As you can see, this iron-containing fluid is no ordinary liquid...and it is being used in gel form to gently clean ancient art.

I believe the carrier in ferrofluid is something non-polar such as kerosene, so I'm wondering it plain water would work - though I seem to recall that just creating a mess...

    its a lot more than just iron fillings
    its Fe3O4 on the nanoparticle size coated in a surfactant to prevent the iron from grouping together and making a giant clump
    to buy some go to united nuclear or just search for it
    you can also make some its not that hard
