I do my best to explain the most basic way to crack a bullwhip: the cattleman's crack. This crack is also known as the circus crack, gypsy crack, drover's crack, and the lion tamer's crack. I'm using an 8 ft David Morgan bullwhip, mainly because it was one of the lightest-colored bullwhips I had on hand and I felt it would show up the best against the green background.

This is the side of my driveway that has trees. It was on the other side of my driveway that I shot the 'bleak' instructional videos on the snow covered, barren hillside.

  • its sort of the ...

its sort of the same as how a tidal wave forms. although i've made a whip out of a belt and various string and can get a nice loud crack using the overhead crack but...it takes strained effort but i can get a crack each time.

  • I had the SAME ...

I had the SAME problem for a long time.

Take the whip and swing not STRAIGHT up and down but rather swing to your left a lil bit, that way when the whip comes down it'll have a tendency to come down to the right. Watch his video on the figure 8 - he does the cattleman's crack in that manner in that video.

I remember feeling JUST like you on that one. Try that out, it'll make a world of difference and the crack will be a LOT louder.

yes you really need a whip. A length of rope is the same thickness all the way from one end to the other. You notice how a whip is thicker at the handle end, and gets thinner as it goes towards the end... thats the secret... when u crack a whip, you send a loop traveling down the length of the whip. As the loop travles towards the end of the whip, the gradual thinning of the whip is what speeds up the loop. when it gets all the way to the end, its going over 700 MPH, and thus, the sonic boom.

Do you really need a whip to do it? I use a 6foot rope half an inch thick, with a 2 foot piece of twine string tied to the end. I wait until it almost touches the ground then I swing my arm forward and down. Sometimes it makes a snap noise, but never a sonicboom

Adam, how do you keep the loop that the whip forms to the outside of of your body, thus not hitting yourself like I do when I try this style of crack?

Hey adam, I was wondering if you think pecards leather conditioner is good to use for my whip. Also if I bought one of your Indiana 8 foot whips, would that be a good target whip, or should I buy a whip just for targets. Also do you sell extra crackers and do you accept paypal.

  • I have a Question ...

I have a Question What is a good website or place to get a whip if you don't have alot of money to spend and if you are just starting out? I don't really want to spend to much cuz I want to see how much I like it first. My brother has some whips and I have played with those so I'm pretty sure I like it but I'd rather see if I really like it. Any Suggestions?

  • Hey Adam, Quick ...

    Hey Adam,
Quick question. I have been really learning this crack from this video, but I noticed something comparing this one and the "figure eight" video you did. In "figure 8", I noticed when you do the cattleman's crack, you swing the whip in a diagonal over your head, whereas in this video you seem to swing it almost straight up and you keep it on one side of your body. Is either way correct, or is one way more correct than the other? Appreciate your time and keep the awesome vids going!
