BIRD VS. JET ENGINE (In Super-Slow-Motion)

It doesn't always cause a crash. But quite often causes engine fire.
The impact usually causes bends/tears on the compressor blades, don't forget that there are more blades than the ones you can see, the further in they get the smaller and delicate. If a blade does break, that blade goes to braek and tear further back.
Also, any sudden change to aerofoil shape of blade can cause surge and stall of engine which is disaster.
Incidentally, after birdstrike the engine smells of cooked bird. Nice.

Each blade is weighed and balanced, like a car wheel, but much more accurately, otherwise there would be too much vibration. So each blade has to go in the correct place.

Take a look at "ThomsonFly 757 bird strike & flames captured on video", this may answer your dumb question, you could see how the situation could have been a lot worse depending on the type of plane they were flying etc.
