Just going over a design for a flash back arrestor. Some people have been asking questions related to flash back arrestors when using a hydrogen fuel cell. So here it is. A very easy technique to implement a simple flash back arrestor using fine bronze wool picked up from a local boating supply store. This will be used in future experiments related to a HHO mini torch, and hydrogen heating applications.

There are three known techniques for flash back arrestors that are proven: fine bronze wool, cigarette filter, and a fine (white) fish tank air stone.

** Please NOTE **
3/8" Tap is tapered NPT (National Pipe Thread)

This is a safety mechanism that is MANDATORY in every HHO Cell design!

Safety is our top concern. Keep your set-up legit and you can ignite the gas with-out concern of explosions in your hydrogen experiments. That in itself is a accomplishment.

  • Another possible ...

Another possible way to stop flashback ONLY NEEDS A magnet that will force the flashback from ignition.
As the magnet will repel the electrons in hydrogen this could be the more effective and efficient method, in REDUCING the potential dangers of hydrogen.

  • Never use glass ...

Never use glass containers for hydrogen cells! Backflow valves and bubbler tubes are necessary safety devices. They are simple and effective. Water in the torch tube is good at extinguishing a flame when backflow valves are installed between the tip and bubbler. The bubbler MUST be used on all cells unless the cell is specifically designed to blow out nergy from an internal explosion. Zerofossilefuel has such a design with a tested blow out disc. Never forget this stuff WILL mame or kill you.

  • Sir, I can't stress ...

Sir, I can't stress the need for a bubbler enough. No flash back arrestor will work every time, you need redundancy in safety devices. I have had my share of explosions and I know what I'm talking about. Never use glass either. A simple bubbler made from 3/4 inch tubing can easily stop flashbacks and protect your cell. I use a one way valve for flashback prevention at the cell and the bubbler as well as a check valve near the torch tip. 99% of the time the check valve stops the backflash.

  • That sure would ...

That sure would have been handy to have the other day when 2 friends and I first experimented with making HHO. We made a 2 wallplate unit in a glass jar full of water. Gee, look at the bubbles! Well....we had to see if it WAS HHO, so, one guy lit it. BANG! Glass jar exploded! Could have been a bad accident but no one hurt and I have never laughed so hard in my life! BE CAREFUL and have fun with science!

This eliminates the use of a bubbler. The only reason people truly use a bubbler is not only just for safety, it can also be used as a scrubber to remove electrolyte from the gas passing through the water-bath.

Why not use 1/2 inch tubing from cell to F.B. arrester and to engine ?? and do you still need a bubbler after the electrolyzer cell with this ?

Hacking the car. Who would have ever thought. Why settle for 25 miles per gallon when you can get 60 with a little hydrogen gas to the fix. The savings long term for the small investment is just to good to be true. Let's not wait on big oil and the automotive industry. This is open source!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you cant use a normal arrestor because the burn rate of hydrogen vs that of lpg or propane or whatever is a LOT faster, and would simply do no good.

  • Yes, that will work ...

Yes, that will work also if you find the 'fine' grade material. At one point we were experimenting with course stainless steel wool found for cleaning pots/pans. It did not work correctly as a flash-back arrestor.

If you find fine stainless steel then that would work the same. Up until this point the fine bronze wool has never failed for providing flash-back arrest.

Would recommend people test their device atleast 100 times or more.

  • A typical home ...

A typical home hydrogen application would separate the two, having two hydrogen tanks and one oxygen tank. The process has to be refined to provide <99% hydrogen. Anything less you cannot compress and store in any type of high pressure container.

  • That is only ...

That is only because of 'flash-back' concerns. Pure hydrogen would burn properly in a platinum catalyst heater without risk of flash-back.

Perfect this method for providing anti-flash-back and Yes platinum catalyst could become a safe method for heating. Otherwise, its a topic no one has touched on. That is with respect to the combination of non-separation of gases, keeping the hydrogen and oxygen mixture together.
