He was 50.

He collapsed at his residence in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles, California, about noon Pacific time, suffering cardiac arrest, according to brother Randy Jackson. He died at UCLA Medical Center.

Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said an autopsy would probably be done on the singer Friday, with results expected that afternoon.

The doctor who was with Michael Jackson when he died is in Los Angeles and is expected to speak to police today, it has been reported.

Detectives said earlier they urgently wanted to speak to a physician, later identified as Dr Conrad Robert Murray, who allegedly injected the star with painkiller shortly before he collapsed and died.

Jackson's family today revealed the 50-year-old had been having daily injections of Demerol, a synthetic pain-killing drug similar to morphine.

It has emerged this evening that Dr Murray was the only person with the singer at the time of his collapse.

A statement from the LA coroner today said: 'We will not and cannot determine cause of death at this time.'

A close relative told TMZ,com, the website that first broke the news of the singer's death, he was injected at 11.30am shortly before having a catastrophic heart attack.

Jackson, who had numerous cosmetic surgery procedures to alter his appearance over the years, denied these allegations but failed to shake off fears about his well-being.

He had been diagnosed with the dermatological disorder vitiligo, which causes depigmentation in patches of skin and which he claimed to be the reason for his whitening appearance.

Jackson had three children, the elder two - Prince Michael I, 12, and Paris Michael, 11 - with ex- wife Miss Rowe.

It has never been revealed who is the mother of his youngest child, seven-year-old Prince Michael II - known as 'Blanket'.

It is thought they will initially be taken care of by Miss Rowe while long-term custody arrangements are made.
