This is a LED voxel cube I have been working on for a while. This is simply a learning exercise before I move on to the larger cube. This one is 4x4x4 which is 64 pixels. I have begun work on my 8x8x8, 512 pixel cube that is 8 times as large as this one here.

The 4x4x4 is driven directly from the IO pins on the micro controller. For that reason I need 20 pins just to drive this small display. In my upcoming 8x8x8 cube I will be using cascaded shift registers to minimize the number of pins needed from 72 pins (illogical and undoable) to merely 3 or 4.

The LEDs used in this cube were chosen because I already HAD them. They are very high brightness and are intended for use in lighting situation (which this is not) and so put off far too much omni directional light. In the new 8x8x8 cube, I will be using smaller, closer together, more diffused red LEDs. This will make 3D depth more apparent by removing the effect one pixel has on its surrounding 7.

  • not really. ...

not really. Especially if you have access to an etching tank or milling machine. I wired everything by hand which caused numerous problems. But its really not that bad.
