These are pictures of lasts months massacre that have never been seen before.

Taken just hours after the killings, they show the savagery and total impunity with which those responsible were acting.

On the morning of Monday November 23 Ismael Mangudadatu was due to cast his vote in local elections. He knew that the opposition wanted him dead and that he was risking everything by standing for office.

After consultation with his family and advisers, Mangudadatu decided to send his wife and two sisters to vote in his place. Under our tradition, Muslim women are respected, he said. They will not harm us if journalists are watching.

The local police refused to provide an escort and the Philippine Army declined a request for protection.

At 9.30am six minibuses began the drive from the town of Buluan to the provincial capital. They were forced off the road by over 100 gunmen.

This is the result.

This footage was taken by Ismael's brother, Esmael at 3.00pm that day. He was among the first civilians to arrive at the scene via helicopter.

What they found was beyond belief. Vehicle after vehicle containing the bodies of those that had made that fateful trip, shot dead in cold blood and at point blank range.

No effort had been made to clear the crime scene of evidence. Hundreds of shells lie scattered all around, even cooking pots belonging to the killers were found, such was the level of contempt for the law that the gunmen displayed.

In total 57 people lost there lives here, 30 were journalists staff, 21 were women. Even for the Philippines this level of politically motivated violence is unparalleled. The country is demanding change but above all it's demanding justice. But many are questioning whether such justice is possible in a country where violence and politics are intrinsically linked.
