  • I can't be sure why ...

I can't be sure why this would be happening, but it shouldn't be. Any time that I have seen this occur, it's because a student has inadvertently introduced some Acrylic paints in with the Oils. Make sure all of your tubes specify "OILS", and make certain you are not using White Gesso for your base coat. Gesso is an Acrylic primer, not to be confused with Magic White ( which I use ) and is an Oil medium.

I started oil painting in 1990, so it's been 19 years now. I've also been instructing nearly that long.

Yes, I would say so. I put the white on pretty heavily, which makes it very opaque and luminous. A heavier application like that keeps them very white and crisp.

  • Hi, thanks for the ...

Hi, thanks for the video. I've been to the national gallery in london quite a few times, and the one thing that always amazes me is the way that the luminous bright white colour of reflected sunlight on the top of clouds is reproduced so accurately on the canvas. Is this colour the same as the 'pure white' that you added to the tops of the clouds towards the end of the session? Thanks again mate.

  • Here are a couple ...

Here are a couple of tips.
Use a lot of paint on the Fan brush. I lay it on pretty thickly to get them nice and white.
I blend the tops very lightly and carefully, so as not to completely churn them into the wet blue background. Over-blending will result in no white left behind.
Also, try thinning the thick white down a little bit, either with the Magic White Base Medium or a few drops of paint thinner. This will make the white stick to the canvas easier, thus preventing too much blending.

  • The main problem I ...

The main problem I seem to have with clouds is that they seem almost non-existent. Essentially, I seem to have trouble getting enough white on the canvas to where they really stand out as full clouds, rather than just white splotches. It seems nearly impossible to get a good, solid white color on without it instantly blending and disappearing with the blue.

  • All my lessons are ...

All my lessons are in Oils, with the exception that my "waterfall" video has an underpainting of Acrylic Black Gesso, over which the Oils are applied.
Also, in the introduction I do make reference to my book, "WILDLIFE LANDSCAPES YOU CAN PAINT", which is in the Acrylic medium.
Perhaps, that is what you heard and are referring to.
