I am having trouble with my 1984 Chevy C-10 Pickup truck. It is running very rough. I am thinking that there is an issue with the timing or distributor. If you have any advise please let me know.

  • timing

i would check to see if the sparkplug wires are wired correctly wired almost sounds like the distributor might be 180 out check make sure its at top dead center on #1 plug and wire from there if you can adjust timing and make run good then runs like before check timing chain slack if real loose it could be making timing jump around but is firing while vavles are open so timing is a timing off thats for sure

  • your timing is WAY ...

your timing is WAY off! I would imagine since its popping out the carb the timing is either to far foward or your timing chain has jumped a few teeth. Popping out of the carb a SURE sign the timing is off.

  • Sounds like timing ...

Sounds like timing could be way to far advanced or wires crossed. NateDogg: yes the firing order can be off when me an my friend put a 383 in his 95 silvy, he had 5 and 7 crossed it ran and would go down the road, but it ran like S**t

  • after that take ur ...

after that take ur fuel line off (don't want the truck to start during this) and put it in a catch pan or something to that affect take ur valve covers off and let one of ur friends just tap the ignition a couple of times if some of the rockers are moving more then others you could have bent pushrods or a bad cam or some really really bad valve lash lol just go through this and see if that doesn't help

ok i have this smae truck and experienced the same eissue even though this truck doesn't have point it does use a magnetics pick up coild take the rotor bug off check ur cleareances on ur pick up also check ur vacum lines u can get a vacum gauge at ur local auto parts store also make sure that all the contacts on ur coil and magnetic pick up are clean second go through and check all ur plug wires then check the plugs after those issues are eliminated then go through and check ur valve lash.

  • That engine will ...

That engine will run on only 5 cylinders. His is obviously hittin on more than tha, it's not floppin around in there like a marlin on the deck of a boat. That one's hittin' on all eight to some extend. Check for vacuum leaks or a leaking plug wire that's grounding out enough of the spark to make it run like S**t

  • if it were 180 out ...

if it were 180 out it wouldnt run at all. turn the distributor counterclockwise untill the popping goes away, if that doesnt fix it then your timing chain is stretched.

  • to me it sounds ...

to me it sounds like the disturburator is in backwards, on a Chevy engine it can go in 2 ways, My advice is to take the disturburator out and turn the rotor button about 180 degrees and try again.

  • If nothing hte ...

If nothing hte other guys mention have helped, you may have some wiped cam lobes with one or more valves not opening or not opening completely. That popping makes me wonder about an exhaust valve not opening.

  • Not sure if you ...

Not sure if you solved ur problem yet but if you didn't maybe this will help. first, did you check the timing on it. from wut i saw, the popping through the carb sounds is for sure your timing. I don't remember exactly but i think if your timing is to far advanced it will pop through the carb. If it's too retarded it will back fire through the tailpipe. I'd start with the timing and see what you can come up with.
