Australia vs. West Indies, Eighth match of the Benson & Hedges Series at the MCG in 1988/89.

The West Indies' dominance was continuing unabated during Australia's World Series Cricket in 1988/89. After the first seven matches, the West Indies had played five and won them all, while the other two were between Australia and Pakistan who had both won one each.

The tide finally turned in front of a buzzing MCG crowd. Having set a modest total of 226, Richie Richardson and Jeff Dujon steered the West Indies to 2/113 before a brilliant caught and bowled by Allan Border turned the match and gave Australia a sniff.

This brilliant catch by Steve Waugh saw Roger Harper off and the West Indies had stumbled to 6/189. With the momentum back their way, Australia did enough to hold on and finally get their first ODI win against the West Indies of the summer.

  • I was there that ...

I was there that night at the opposite end of the ground. The crowd rose to their feet as the ball sailed away from us into what I thought would have been the 15th row. The ball was in the air so long you got to see the fielder running and the ball dropping it was incredible how the crowd reacted. All cricket admirers appreciate that catch. There was 70,000+ there that night and plenty of them weren't Aussies. I will never forget it. And he did throw the ball over his right shoulder! Merv got it
