If you provided support last year for a child in your household who is unrelated to you, you may be able to claim a deduction for that child due to new rules for dependents.
The IRS recently clarified the tax laws relating to qualifying dependents. This clarification means that if you live with and support your significant other’s child, you can claim that child as your dependent. The child does not have to be a blood relative or related by marriage to be claimed as a dependent. This change is retroactive to all tax years beginning after December 31, 2004, which means you can amend your tax returns from those years to receive this benefit.
If you are eligible to claim an unrelated child as a dependent, you can also claim any eligible day care expenses for the Child and Dependent Care Credit.
This change provides many taxpayers who are responsible for a child with an added tax benefit when filing their tax return. You should also remember that you may be able to amend a previous year’s return and receive a refund if you were living in a household with a non-related child that you supported during 2005 or 2006.

The Nation's Largest Automaker Takes it's Oldest Brand to a New Level
After a year of record losses and massive re-structuring, the auto industry is poising itself for a come-back. As part of their reorganization, General Motors, the nation's largest automaker, decided to focus on just four of their eight American brands.
When it came to the selection process, Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC were obvious choices due to their large market shares. But with only one hit stateside and an overall lack of popularity, Buick was a somewhat controversial choice. However, as the company looks to build strength globally, their oldest brand will play a key role.
In fact, already popular in China, the latest LaCrosse was designed collaboratively in Detroit and Shanghai. In addition, the new midsize Regal, introduced to America at the LA Auto Show, is a hot seller abroad. And in Europe, the Opel Insignia, based on the Regal, was named the 2009 European Car of the Year.

This year, Nokia headline with their Internet Services. Nokia President and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo reinforces the company's vision and embraces the Internet by unveiling a new line up of converged devices and services that promote collaboration and sharing.
The new handsets all exhibit different location based and multimedia experiences, from pedestrian navigation to geotagging and movie viewing to video and photo sharing. Nokia sees mapping and navigation as a fundamental platform for the mobile phones of the future. They also reveal the next step towards Ovi, the Internet service environment, by introducing 'Share on Ovi'.
The N78 will be the first device to hit the market with 'Share on Ovi', which gives users a one-stop-shop for uploading, sharing and reusing personal media. The first Ovi branded service to be available on the market, it is completely integrated in the phone and allows on the move access to your personal online. More Ovi branded services can be expected later in the year, as Nokia build on their position in the internet services market.
But before you can share, you must create, and Nokia's newest additions to the Nseries range, the N96 and N78, take creating content to another level. The N96 offers 16GB of memory, or 25 Hollywood blockbusters' worth of video. Also available with the N96 is the latest DVB-H technology which lets you access live TV on the move, as well as streaming video from the web. The N78 takes 'Share on Ovi' and combines it with the all new Nokia Maps 2.0, Nokia Music Store and a digital camera. Meanwhile the 6210 Navigator is the company's first GPS-enabled device with built in compass.
Another new service Maps 2.0 takes mapping and navigation experiences to another level by enhancing pedestrian navigation, with multimedia city guides and satellite imaging as part of a redesigned interface.
"As we continue to free the Internet from the limitations of the desktop, we are taking mobility into a completely new realm of possibility," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Chief Executive Officer of Nokia.

Flowers Help Moms De-stress and Offer a Proven Pick-Me-Up for Mother's Day
For over a hundred years, mothers in the United States have been honored on Mother's Day, traditionally celebrated with beautiful bouquets of flowers. New research suggests that the positive power flowers have on feelings may be the real reason mothers prefer to be given beautiful blooms on their special day. According to a behavioral research study conducted by Nancy Etcoff, Ph.D., of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, when fresh-cut flowers are in the home, people feel more compassionate toward others, have less worry and anxiety and feel less depressed.

The Toys for Tots Literacy Program is helping raise awareness of the issue of children's literacy and the importance of families reading together.
A year-round initiative of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, the program offers our nation's most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and to succeed in life by providing them direct access to books and educational resources that enhance their ability to read and to communicate effectively.
As the exclusive sponsor of the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, participating The UPS Store (r) locations collect monetary donations throughout the year. Every dollar donated places a book into the hands of a less fortunate child in the local community.
To raise awareness of the need for initiatives like the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, The UPS Store network has enlisted the assistance of the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) and its president and founder, Sharon Darling.
"The ability to read is the foundation on which the rest of an education is built. However, far too many families can't foster a love of reading and learning because they don't have access to the resources they need, including books," said Darling. "The National Center for Educational Statistics released a report asserting that 33 percent of all fourth graders in this country cannot read at grade level. This puts at risk their futures and their ability to become actively engaged adults and productive members of society."
The program suggests people consider purchasing a copy of a favorite childhood book and sharing its magic with a child who may not know the joy of having a book of his or her own. The NCFL and the Toys for Tots Literacy Program have also developed a book list as a guide for parents to use in selecting quality books for their children.
Since the March 2008 launch of the program, The UPS Store network has raised more than $1 million, enabling the purchase of an equal number of books.

SILVER SPRING, MD - We are closer than ever before to reforming a health care system that ensures affordable, quality care for all. With the successful passage in the House of H.R. 3962, “The Affordable Health Care for America Act” the focus of the health care debate is now on the Senate. The American Nurses Association urges all Americans to contact their Senators to voice their support for meaningful health care reform.
Join ANA in advocating for a health care system that focuses on wellness and prevention, a high-quality public insurance option that complements and competes fairly with options offered by private insurers, and a national healthcare workforce policy which recognizes the vital role nurses play.
ANA remains committed to the principle that health care is a basic human right and that all persons are entitled to ready access to affordable, quality health care services. ANA supports a restructured health care system that ensures universal access to a standard package of essential health care services for all individuals and families. That is why ANA strongly supports the inclusion of a public health insurance plan option as an essential part of comprehensive health care reform.
As the largest group of health care professionals, nurses are uniquely positioned to advocate for and with their patients to achieve a health care system that provides safe quality care. Nurses see firsthand how important access to affordable quality health care is. They are witness to the tragedy of patients delaying care for financial reasons and the devastating impact it can have on their health and their families.
ANA believes that the time for reform is now. Help ANA achieve the goal of transforming the current "sick care" system into a true "health care" system.

As research continues to mount about the effectiveness of memory screenings and the benefits of early detection of memory problems, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) held its 7th annual National Memory Screening Day on November 17.
The event coincided with National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, observed during November.
More than 2,100 sites across the country offered free, confidential memory screenings and educational materials about memory concerns, successful aging and local resources. The face-to-face screening, conducted by a qualified healthcare professional, took about five minutes to administer and consisted of a series of questions and/or tasks.
Sites included doctor's offices, senior centers and assisted living facilities, as well as 1,030 Kmart Pharmacy locations nationwide as part of the chain's GoldK Day.
Screeners emphasized that the test results do not represent a diagnosis and encouraged individuals with below-normal scores as well as those who still had concerns to pursue a full medical exam.
AFA believes screenings are appropriate for individuals concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of dementia; whose family and friends have noticed changes in them; who believe they are at risk due to family history; or who want to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons.
"We must break through the enormous stigma and denial about memory problems that still exist today," said Eric J. Hall, AFA's president and chief executive officer. "It's a message that the nation as a whole and aging baby boomers especially need to heed."
Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. Other member problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible, such as Alzheimer's disease.
Warning signs of Alzheimer's disease include forgetting people's names and events, asking repetitive questions and confusion over daily routines.
In a report, "Memory Matters," released last December, AFA noted that current research supports screening as a "safe, cost-efficient intervention that can reassure the healthy individual, promote successful aging and, when indicated, direct individuals to appropriate clinical resources."

Poor weather affects harvest; likely to be less pumpkin available this holiday
Nestlé Baking today announced that it expects a shortage of LIBBY'S(r) Pumpkin on store shelves as the country enters the holiday season. Heavy rains persisted throughout the 13-week harvest in Morton, Illinois, frustrating efforts to pick the entire crop. As a result, less pumpkin has been picked and canned, leading to an anticipated shortage of LIBBY'S pumpkin products as the holidays approach.
"We know that LIBBY'S Pumpkin, with the LIBBY'S Famous Pumpkin Pie Recipe on the label, plays an important role in the traditional holiday meal," said Paul Bakus, Vice President/General Manager, Nestlé Baking. "Libby's has been a part of that tradition for more than 80 years and we appreciate that honor. That's why we wanted to alert bakers to the anticipated shortage. Our calculations indicate that we may deplete our inventory of canned LIBBY'S pumpkin as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday."
As a result of the weather and the company's commitment to picking and packing only quality fruit, the 2009 inventory of canned pumpkin will be smaller than planned. Nestlé is continuing to ship the last of the already canned inventory. When it is gone, there will be no more pumpkin available until the 2010 harvest. This is why the company believes a shortage of LIBBY'S pumpkin is likely.
"If only we could have changed the weather!" said Bakus. "We hope Mother Nature is nicer to us next year, hopefully delivering less rain and more sunshine. If you are unable to find Libby's 100 percent Pure Pumpkin at your local grocers, we apologize and hope you will understand."
To try and help bakers who may be disappointed by the shortage, Bakus is encouraging bakers to visit www.VeryBestBaking****, where they'll find new recipes added to the pie collection.
