Most of us drink nowhere near enough water, but if you are training and dieting water takes on much more importance and can make building a better body far easier. The recommended amount of water is eight 200ml glasses a day. Do you do that now? Most probably not (if you're like most of us, that is..)
Now, if you're training you actually NEED to be increasing your water intake and it would be a good idea to aim for 8-10 glasses per day as your body requires it alot more than that of a person not exercising.
I know many people who believed water was causing them to retain a layer of fat around their belly yet discovered it was actually down to Fizzy Drinks. The chemicals in these drinks forcing the body to hang onto fat in this area. Water's job is to flush out your system, you'll notice an immediate change if you swap fizzy drinks for a drink of water. Note: Drinking juice, tea, coffee or 'stuff with water in it' doesn't count.

One of the most common things we are asked about reverts back to the age-old problem of "So, I've been using the gym to try to lose weight but after a month I noticed I'd lost nothing - in fact I've actually put ON weight!" This is a perfectly normal thing, but most instructors fail to prepare their clients for the shock.
It can lead a person to believing 'the gym just doesn't work for me' or 'I can't lose weight no matter what' and the truth is very different. Unless you have a medical problem preventing weight loss, there is no way physical training and diet will 'not work for you'. That's 100% fact.
Ever heard people say the first 2-3 months are the hardest? They're right. That is becuase, as your body adapts to your new-found training regime it is forced to develop some muscle to withstand the pain you are subjecting it to, you are burning fat but in the initial month of training your body undergoes a radical shift in muscle growth and the net result is usually no change in weight or in many cases weight actually going up. Most people have a knee-jerk reaction which causes them to quit on themselves at this point. Beyond the first 4-6 weeks your body adapts to your training and you no longer add muscle unless you are specifically aiming to do so. It's really that simple.

Do you get enough sleep? In your quest to lose fat and build muscle, sleep is one of the mose overlooked (yet vital) aspects to building a great body. No matter how much hard work you put in during your tough diet or gym sessions, your muscles truly grow when you are asleep. Ever heard the old saying you need 8hrs a night? It's true. For those training hard, 8-10 is even better.
Your muscles don't reach their maximum growth period until you hit a deep sleep, so if you're only sleeping for 3 to 4 hours a night you're simply not getting the most from your hard efforts before waking up and asking your body to go through it all again.

If you want to get out of your current job and work in a gym environment it's not as hard, or expensive, as you may think. While there are many, many companies prepared to charge you thousands of pounds to train you, Russ recommends you first visit your local college. The name of the qualification you'll need to become a registered Fitness Instructor is a YMCA Level 2 Gym qualification (also known as an NVQ Level 2 Gym). Most colleges offer these, and charge alot less than personal training companies looking to cash in on your inexperience.
