By Stuart Overbey --Elections in New Mexico have been rife with problems. Now it comes to light that a private company has been in charge of programming the voting machines on the front end, and gathering the data on the back end. And, they're not talking.

There was no mystery as to who the media star was after two Minnesota Public Radio hosted congressional debates. In a chaotic scene, reporters crowded around 6th District Republican incumbent Rep. Michele Bachmann after her debate with DFL challenger Elwyn Tinklenberg. One Bachmann supporter proudly yelled to the press "she is a pitbull in lipstick!" Inside the lobby of MPR, a much more subdued scene had Tinklenberg taking questions from a gaggle if reporters for over ten minutes. By the time 2nd District Republican incumbent Rep. John Kline finished his debate with DFL challenger Steve Sarvi, most of the press had vanished. When approached by The UpTake, Rep. Kline refused to take questions.

more at *******www.theuptake**** Who's making intimidating phone calls to voters in Minnesota? The answer might surprise you. Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie released an affidavit describing a phone call linked to Minnesota Majority a far right-wing issue advocacy group. The caller indicated that the voter in question was listed twice on the public voter rolls. The voter (who moved addresses but kept their telephone number) asked who the caller reported to. They indicated Jeff Davis, president of Minnesota Majority. Davis co-founded Minnesota Majority with Republican Mary Kiffmeyer - the former MN Secretary of State before Democrat Mark Ritchie.

More at *******www.theuptake****. Rep. Michele Bachmann caught the national spotlight recently when she told MSNBC's Chris Mathews that Barack Obama "may have anti-American views." While Bachmann's statement may have come as a surprise to people outside of her home district in central Minnesota, she has a history of making statements that are inflammatory, controversial and requiring further explanation. Up until now, the most famous of those was her assertion that there was a plan already in place to partition Iraq and give half of it to Iran. She later said her comments had been "misconstrued", but did not elaborate. One comment that she has never explained was made in a debate she had while running for Congress the first time in November of 2005. Prompted by the rioting that was going on in France at the time, Bachmann said "not all cultures are equal, not all values are equal." and implied heavily that people of the Muslim faith had an inferior culture to that of the United States.

More at *******www.theuptake**** If there's one thing both the McCain and Obama campaigns agree on it's that the election will be close in Florida. The McCain campaign says it has more volunteers than the Democrats and that ultimately gives them the edge. McCain's Central Florida Campaign Manger says ACORN and the Democrats have to rely on paid workers. However, the McCain campaign is hiring paid workers who sometimes also call themselves volunteers. The UpTake's Sam Mayfield talked to a few of them... and that's when one McCain campaign worker decided you shouldn't see what is going on and threatened to have her arrested.

More at *******www.theuptake**** At a townhall meeting held in Blaine, MN on Tuesday evening Democratic Congressional challenger Elwyn Tinklenberg announced his campaign had raised over $1,000,000 since Republican incumbent Michele Bachmann's infamous Hardball appearance. Tinklenberg noted that the money came from over 18,000 donors from accross the country and the average donation was $40. The money will be directed towards the campaign's GOTV efforts and media buys on television and radio. The challenger is also getting a boost from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) which placed Tinklenberg on its "Red to Blue" list of targeted House campaigns. Tinklenberg was add to the list prior to Bachmann leveling charges of anti-Americanism against Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and liberal members of Congress. The DCCC will soon begin airing its own ads in Minnesota that are expected to take direct aim against Bachmann.

More at *******www.theuptake****. This video is about the 8th congressional district in Missouri, which is one of the most geographically large, politically conservative, and economically impoverished districts in the U.S. It has been represented for almost 30 years by conservative republicans, the Emersons. A young Democrat, Joe Allen, who people have referred to as a white Obama, is challenging the Emerson dynasty in 2008.

You may have heard that pepper spray was used on the first official night of the DNC, or that some protesters got arrested. The UpTake's Eli Linch went on a mission today to find out what happened and get the protester's side of the story. Are the charges levied on those arrested accurate? When did the tear gas come into the picture? Check out this side of the story. Greg Spagnuolo – spokesperson and co-founder of the Recreate 68 Allaince says the police were getting out of hand and acting in a criminal nature Protesters say they were blockaded. Police had been harassing people throughout the day in the park even though the people had a permit to be there.. The police drove them out of the park and then blocked them in an area where they pepper sprayed people and shoved people with their batons Police report said the people who were arrested were throwing rocks at the police, obstruction and disobeying lawful orders. Several people told us they didn’t see anybody throw rocks at the police. There were no orders given by police. The minute protesters went into the streets they were hit with pepper spray and pepper bullets. Another organizer told us “We have a permit for this park. So to me it’s the cops who disobeyed a lawful order to leave us the hell alone with our permit. “They make these things up when they attack people so they can try and make charges stick, so they don’t wind up looking like the aggressor, which is what they were.” Spagnulo says “It’s a shame that this had to happen. Everyone was acting non-violently. The police were itching for a fight since about 6 o’clock on. They were pushing people in the park shoving people around acting like a bunch of bullies and it didn’t need to happen this way. I don’t know who made the tactical call from the police department, but it was a piss-poor call because now everybody is all tense and motivated for more confrontation and that’s something we didn’t want and its something that the police are bringing down upon themselves and I think it’s a shame.”
