You know the old saying: Kill two birds with one stone? It’s just a saying …Annuities are like that… they’re tax-deferred retirement savings plans, but they’re also insurance policies. When you buy an annuity, you’re investing a certain amount of money with an insurance company. The insurer promises to credit earnings to your account and to annuitize your account value. Annuitization means that insurer will return your principal and earnings to you in regular payments - guaranteed - for the rest of your life. Or, if you prefer, you can withdraw your money as you need it. Some investors use annuities as a way to accumulate tax-deferred earnings without planning to annuitize. Others buy annuities as a personal pension, to provide a stream of guaranteed lifetime income, and to have a good life insurance policy, to protect the family.

Asset Allocation is your master plan for building and managing your investment portfolio. You decide how much to invest in different investment categories. Maybe you buy some stocks, a few bonds, a lot of cash or cash equivalents. And – this is key – how much of each you choose has a major impact on your investment return. Why? All asset classes do not behave equally. A market that produces strong stocks may be a blow to bonds. If you allocated your investments across the board, your slumping fruit stock may be offset by your chip bonds going gangbusters. Step one: Choose which asset classes you want in your portfolio. Then: Consider what percentage of your portfolio you want to allocate to each of these asset classes. And that concludes Asset Allocation 101.

Cash Investments and/or Cash Equivalents: Short-term investments that earn interest on your principal. What sets cash investments apart – is their liquidity. They can go from investment in your portfolio to cash in your hands – fast. And chances are good you won’t lose money in a quick cash-out. By contrast, sell a stock quickly to cash-out, and chances are 50/50 you’ll lose. In the big picture, cash investments in your portfolio can be like a buffer – against the ups and downs of your more volatile assets, like ca-ray-zee stocks. Plus, their liquidity and price stability means cash equivalents can play a part in both your saving and investing strategies.
