Satanic Dagga Orgy performing one of their latest singles 'Homo for Naledi' on the James Phillips stage at Oppikoppi 2016. With a name taken straight off a tabloid headline, it's clear that Satanic Dagga Orgy don't take themselves too seriously. The same, however, can't be said for their approach to music. Drawing influence from pop music and punk rock, S.D.O's grooving folk jams fill the space between the two extremes and get the crowd bouncing along from the first chord to the last beat of the snare. Academie performing their single off their debut album Volumes ft. Horizons Project Choir (Live at Oppikoppi 2016) on the Skellum stage Saturday 6th August. With their haunting debut single Sulphur, wife Jean-Louise Nel and husband Alex Parker, launched their Johannesburg based band Academie. Multi-instrumentalists Jean-Louise (Dear Reader, Fulka) and Alex (ISO, Tumi Molekane and Ross Jack) are both established musicians in the South African music scene. Academie represents the synthesis of two evolved artistic sensibilities. Their music is laced with the whispered melancholy of a deferred nostalgia. It feels ephemeral, crystalline as it dissolves and reconstitutes itself in a cyclical aesthetic of the impermanent. Jean-Louise’s eerie vocals are subtly blended with her own viola loops and electric guitar against a disquieting rhythmic backdrop of drum pads and warm synthesizers played by Alex. The overall effect is disconcertingly beautiful. The Horizons Project aims to not simply stimulate the creation of new choral music written by young South African composers but aims to facilitate the creation of a new generation of South African composers who write for the genre of choral music The choir consist of 24 hand picked singers from a various fields, but share to love for singing and performing choral music.
