From the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, Cars****'s Kelsey Mays takes a look at the interior of the 2010 Nissan 370Z.
A good chunk of Southern California is burning with brush fires this Saturday evening in November, but it turns out that the hot place to be is here in this small parking lot, as the incendiary new 2009 Nissan 370Z makes its first official public appearance anywhere on the planet. There are no firefighters on hand — or even an open flame — but the scene is on fire. Inside Line is the first to get its hands on the new '09 Z-car, and we're letting you get your hands on it, too.
If you aren't here, it's your own fault. It's not like you weren't invited.
We're in the parking lot of TWBA/Chiat/Day, Nissan's advertising agency in the U.S., and there's a scrum of wired-up Z-car people, some hitters from the project team at Nissan who created the new car and a platoon of people from Inside Line. Lights are hung from gantries to make the scene as bright as day, and digital cameras and handheld video cams are on every hip. There is even free food from the best damn taco truck in L.A.
It's the coming-out party for the 2009 Nissan 370Z, a full week before its official debut at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Is it hot enough for you?
Yes, there is still a sports car in the Nissan lineup that does not have all-wheel drive, launch control or a turbocharged engine. It's now called the Nissan 370Z and unlike the big bruiser of a sports car that is the GT-R, this new Z is actually smaller than its predecessor. It's an attempt to get the iconic sports car back to its roots, and from the looks of it, Nissan has done a solid job.
Fully redesigned from top to bottom, the 2009 Nissan 370Z still rides on Nissan's rear-wheel-drive, front-midship (FM) platform. It's been modified to give this Z-car a shorter 100.4-inch wheelbase (down 3.9 inches) and a shorter overall length of 167.1 inches (down 2.7 inches). The 370Z is also wider at 72.6 inches (up 1.3 inches) with wider tracks front (up a half-inch) and rear (up 1.3 inches).
All that shrinkage helps this Z shed a few pounds. A base-model 370Z with a manual transmission weighs in at 3,232 pounds. That's 88 pounds less than a base-model 2008 Nissan 350Z with a manual transmission. Even the heaviest 370Z still weighs just 3,314 pounds.

FOR THE FULL TEST:
2009 Nissan 370Z is lit for the cameras tonight, and the bubble of white light around it holds back the darkness of this parking lot in Los Angeles. The Z-car believers have come to see the car in its first public showing, and Randy Rodriguez is one of them.
Rodriguez has come a long way to be here. Raised in British Columbia, his family ran a small gas station and car repair business and came to specialize in Nissans. His first car was a Nissan 240Z that he rebuilt with his own hands, and he's owned 10 early Zs over the years, though he's still only 31.
As with all Z-car people, Rodriguez doesn't quite fit in the box where you find most car enthusiasts; he's a little out of the mainstream, a little more open to doing things differently, and a little more serious about cars in way that only someone who has had to bring old, second-hand beaters back to life can be.
Rodriguez is exactly the person for whom this new Z-car is meant. Probably there's some kind of magic at work in the fact that Randy Rodriguez's day job is at Nissan Design America, and he was the one who first sketched the lines of what has become the 2009 Nissan 370Z.
