BY MAURICE SCARBOROUGH You're watching multisource tech video news analysis from Newsy. Geeks rejoice! Sony Ericsson has officially set a launch date for its highly anticipated, PlayStation certified smartphone -- the Xperia Play-- at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The phone will launch this spring and will be exclusive to Verizon at release. The phone will come pre-loaded with a number of games, and will sport access to Sony’s PlayStation Store where users can buy content exclusive only to the Playstation platform. Initial reviews from MWC have generally been positive, with many commenting on the phone’s streamlined control scheme -- one many Playstation fans will be familiar with. MSNBC’s In-Game blog says -- while gaming on smart phones is becoming more popular -- it’s not always a comfortable experience. “The Xperia Play appears to address this very issue... We'll have to see once we get our hands on the device itself. In the meantime, I'm trying to erase all memory of the previous gaming phone, the failed Nokia N-Gage.” Yikes! Don’t remind us. On CNN - Sony Ericsson’s CEO promises the phone will avoid the same mistakes as its failed predecessor. BERT NORDBERG: “When you launch, if you don’t have the eco-system, this phone is worth nothing without the game publishers and all the game companies. So to build all that takes time. There’s over 50 games from day one, very exciting games they tell me.” ANCHOR: “And it’s gonna launch in March so you’re not messing around?” BERT NORDBERG: “No, no, no it will be in the stores of U.S. in April I promise you.” The phone comes equipped with some fairly impressive hardware -- sporting a 5.1 megapixel camera, 400MB of built-in memory, as well as an 8GB memory card. And to top things off it’ll support the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. That’s enough hardware to impress at least one writer for tech blog Andronica. “...after playing with Xperia Play today, I really think SE might be on to something... It’s too early to say that this is the best Android gaming phone, and we may not get to that point. However, it looks to be the most unique.” But a writer for CNET says he’s altogether unimpressed - naming a few reasons why he’s steering clear of the Xperia Play. But his biggest reason? Its name. “‘Xperia Play’ doesn't mean much to anyone. Why not use the name PlayStation Phone? Or PSPhone? It feels like Sony's hiding from the association, which is bizarre...This isn't a PSP Phone. This is an Android phone that happens to play a few PlayStation games. It's not enough to take on Apple's App Store.” So what do you think? Does Sony Ericsson’s new phone have what it takes to compete in the smart-phone market? Get more multisource tech video news analysis from Newsy. Transcript by Newsy.
