This is part three of Kraven’s first hunt and reads really well. The action was great and it had just the right amount of humor and humanity to bring the story to life in a way that only Peter Parker can. This story also upped my respect for Pete’s roommate Vin because of how he handled himself in this fight. He really stepped us, MGH or no and took it to the huntress. He didn’t run away from the fight initially until Spiderman, as Daredevil, stepped in and told him to get out. The art looks great. I have always been a huge fan of Phil Jimenez and I love what he does on the pages. He has a great balance of reality and fantasy in his drawings that shows the far out action but makes it believable. There were a few things that I didn’t like though. The first was Vermin showing up and saving the day. It was a bit of a cop out didn’t give the resolution that the great fight we were witnessing deserved. The other was how Spidey explained things to Vin. It made him look like a real jerk wasn’t necessary. I understand that he needed to keep Vin from asking questions but I don’t think that was the best way to handle it. This was a great arch though and I love the new villain. It’s no big surprise that it’s Kraven’s daughter and I like her because as her mom said, she is her father’s daughter and the outcome of this story was very similar to how an old Kraven story would have gone. Good job Spidey brain trust. Distributed by Tubemogul.

This limited series is definitely going on the pass list. I got it mostly because of Jackpot on the cover. I loved the addition of her to Spiderman’s world and they really left it on a wide open note. I was hoping to get a bit more about her but it doesn’t look like that is going to be the case. It’s just a fight between a sinister 6 super Skrull and the Spidey supporting cast. Not very interesting and with secret invasion already plunging so deep into the wallet it’s not worth it. Let this one go you don’t need it. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Now we’re talking, this book is really getting going. The goblin is back and as vicious as ever. Eddie Brock seems to have calmed down a bit and has decided to leave Peter alone and is focusing on getting after Venom. Peter outsmarts the tracer lock and takes out Bullseye. Norman has put the costume back on and I have never been so excited about what’s to come in this title. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Those of you who follow Shazap or at least are reading this title know that it was coming off a really strong arch and I know I was waiting for this issue to see if it could continue. The answer you’ve all been waiting for….. we’ll have to wait and see. This was a typical filler issue that Spidey didn’t even appear in except for memories but focused instead on his old friend Flash Thompson. This book is also a bit of a tribute to the troops serving in the Middle East and what they are going through. It is a decent read but as far as continuity is concerned it is not vital to the title and you can give this one a pass if you like. The last page however is huge. It is a powerful image and will definitely be a part of the Pete’s life to come and we’re going to show it to you…….now. Wow, what more can happen to Flash, he’s gotten beat up, kidnapped, lost his memory and now his legs. It’s tough being a super hero’s friend. Anyways hopefully next week will get back to the story and it will be as strong as the last arch. Distributed by Tubemogul.

We can all breathe a little easier this week, Spidey is back and the writers were able to maintain the quality that was brought in the New Ways to Die Arch. Since his introduction I’ve had my eye on Mr Negative as I felt he had a lot of potential to be a solid villain for our favorite wall crawler and there was enough mystery around him to keep it interesting. Oh, and the Hammer, formerly known as Hammer Head, wow. Look at that DC Marvel can resurrect some D listers and make them badass too. They’ve really done amazing work with this character and hooray Spiderman has someone respectable to fight. One thing I’ve really got to hand to these writers is how they are able to bring the humor into this book without cheapening the action and drama of it. Spiderman himself has always been funny but the tone of the book had gotten a bit darker. These books read funny and the same drama is presented in a much lighter fashion. It is becoming a top shelf book again in terms of quality and that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Two archs in a row it looks like it’s time to come back to Friendly Neighborhood Wall Crawler. Distributed by Tubemogul.

This spiderman seems to be in a jolly mood and has committed himself to some quality dancing. Yeah, he's having some time off from his world-saving schedules.

The action in this story is getting going so that helps a bit but it still isn't that great. There's a bit of a twist when Spidey finds the hostages and we discover the doctor that he saved in the beginning is actually the crazed evil dude. I think part of the problem is the snow. The evil Mayan god king that has come to earth has also brought with him a blizzard as he says; he is the absence of warmth and the blackest night. I think that one's already taken but I won't tell DC if you don't. The snow keeps spidey from being spidey, he can't web around he's shivering I mean a bum stuffs his shirt full of newspaper, or able to move like himself. It presents him with a challenge but what is our favorite wall crawler if he can't crawl on walls. The good news is that the god king, this big dude who looks like a skeletal predator with giant batwings took spidey out pretty fast so you know there's going to be a big throw down in the next issue. There hasn't been much story around this particular arch so you can just wait and jump in on the action next week.

Alright, the Brand New Day finally starts showing a little more life. This marks the twelfth issue since spiderman has gone almost weekly. That means in the last 4 months we’ve gotten a year’s worth of Spiderman and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. It has definitely had it’s ups and downs but it looks like things are finally starting to come around. This issue has some pretty sick action as Spidey takes on the Mayan god and while the way he defeats him is a little campy there is no denying the quality of the action leading up to it. Our favorite wall crawler wins the day by managing to hold off the god king keep his sacrifice alive long enough for the time necessary for the right to be performed to pass. In the end spidey gets to let off some steam and share some humor. This issue is a good read but the real excitement comes in the comment section at the end of he issue when it editor Stephen Wacker discusses the future of the title and the issue to come next week when the characters and stories that were started in the earlier brand new day issues finally come back around. This week I’m a fan of the Brand New day but who knows where I’ll be next week.

shazap**** In this issue the all the stories that have been started since Brand New Day began are starting to come back around. Now that the snow has melted life gets back to normal in NYC and everyone comes out to play. This title is in a weird place because the story and themes are pretty good but the writing is in an almost juvenile place. It is over simplified and the dialog is way dumbed down. I get that they are trying to take Peter back with the brand new day but how far back has he gone. This is reminiscent of when Peter was in college, but he’s been out for a long time, and what about all of the power ups and evolutions that Spiderman has undergone. What about the events of the Other series, the stuff with Ezekiel, and when his webs became organic right before the avengers disassembled. Some of the loose ends within the Brand New Day arch are beginning to get tied up, but what about the continuity in the rest of the marvel universe. I’ll stick around just to see how they pull it off and thankfully it is getting entertaining enough to make it worth while.

shazap**** Sickening, absolutely disgusting! OK Those of you who have been watching shazap for a while may remember one of my earliest rants about how terrible it was that they had Peter Parker lurking in a tree taking pictures of a private funeral like some lowly paparazzi, well it has officially come to pass. Peter Parker is now officially a member of the paparazzi. At least the other characters seam to be as disgusted by it as I am. I am just not yet convinced by this new direction. I don’t get it. There does seam to be something interesting about the nnew villain, well soon to be villain, that is introduced named paper doll. I’ll stick with it because that’s what I do but seriously they almost had me back and then they have the panel of Spidey swinging by with his camera and a montage of his celeb shots behind him. It just baffles me.
