*******www.ibm****/software/tivoli/solutions/asset-management/?cm_mmc=agus_itmbipcty-20090810-usitp200-_-n-_-bv1-_-m Bob Vavra, Editor of Plant Engineering Magazine, part of Reed Business Information, talks about how critical it is, to the success of a manufacturing plant, to employ and understand how to effectively use an enterprise asset management system. _________________________________________ I think one of the biggest issues that we have with asset management is not everybody uses it just yet. The technology is there, the ability to manage the assets on the plant floor are very, very real, but a lot of manufacturers have a very difficult time understanding why or even how to go about managing their assets. They don’t know necessarily that there’s going to be any return on investment for them. They’ve been running so hard for so long that there tends to be this break-fix mentality in manufacturing. And in reality, it’s very, very difficult today for a manufacturing plant to simply run to failure like that. It’s not a good business practice, it’s not a very safe practice and it actually lowers your productivity. I think one of the areas in service management that we look at is these are things that – these assets, this enterprise asset management system, all these kinds of things are systems like every other system within their organization, but they’re not something that the plant manager intrinsically knows how to do, how to operate, how to manage. I think one of the effective things that we want to be able to see and our readers want to be able to see in an asset management organization, is – “how can you take them to understand not just what the software and hardware does, but how you use it effectively over the course of time.” And that’s a process of training and retraining, it’s a process of updating with new software releases. I think service management, as it is with any other part of a manufacturing business, is a major part of the success of whatever it is you ultimately manufacture. One of the big challenges in that, of course, is that your plant manager may not be an IT expert, but they do need to be – have access to that kind of solution very, very quickly. I think that’s one of the things that we’ve kind of been championing is – “How do you get from installing a piece of asset management systems or energy management or any other kind of systems on your plant floor, and how do you make the most effective use of it?” It’s like anything else. If you don’t take full advantage of your asset on the plant floor, you’re not going to be able to reap the greatest benefit out of it. If you have an asset management system and you’re underutilizing it – and that may be as big a problem with asset management systems as anything else – is that the solution is put there and people don’t utilize it to its full advantage.

By using Maximo solutions, they were able to move from a preventative maintenance system to a predictive maintenance system, enabling true efficiencies throughout the organization. And in turn, creating innovation for their organization and end consumers. " "In today’s economy, we realize that we have to do much more with less – less personnel and less time. We recognized that we needed a mobile application to run our building maintenance program because it was the only way for our trades people to be actively involved with their inspections, less time at a computer, much more mobile fashion and they were able to keep themselves out there and productive. Atkins is an 18,000 strong worldwide organization that are involved in planning and infrastructure works across the world. We have some quite large U.K.-based organizations. Lloyd’s Banking Group, the Metropolitan Police and the U.K. Home Office Organization. By moving our inspection system into Maximo, we were able to move from a preventative maintenance system to predictive maintenance system. Our customer felt that they needed to have a weekly inspection done on all of our fire doors and we provided that service for our customer but when we had the mobile inspections placed into Maximo, we were able to prove that these weekly inspections actually didn’t need to be done. We had real-time data showing that the inspections could be moved out to more of a monthly schedule. One of the ways that we think we offer a smart building proposition is remote technology, our Atkins remote technology that can monitor plants and equipment in remote buildings, and we can monitor that via the Web, and those monitors can send instructions to our Atkins Intelligence System, our Maximo system so that sometimes we can fix assets before the building occupier knows that there’s a problem with those assets. So, Atkins are contributing to a Smarter Planet through smarter buildings, which effectively leads into smarter cities where we have some of our local authority and government organizations running those cities, which ultimately leads into smarter planets. By moving this inspection process into Maximo, we were able to gain many efficiencies by being able to write to one place and to have our customers read that data many times over. It excites me to know that Maximo has such flexible applications and the ability to grow those applications for each department solution that we need. IBM offers us tools like Maximo to allow us to effectively create that innovation within our organization for other organizations. I think with IBM we’re sharing a vision of a bigger picture where they can see the bigger picture, we can see the bigger picture interconnected.… With IBM we feel as though we’ve got that capability in everything that we need.
