After the subframe was re-attached to our 1969 Pontiac Firebird "Routy," the reassembly began. First up was the sheetmetal, namely the doors, fenders, core support, and the reproduction steel Trans Am hood. We had to do a few tricks to make them all line up correctly, but it wasn't too bad of a project. Here's how the process went.

It's all right to consider the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible the company's first real drop top. Sure, there was that M30 thing back in the early days, but it was just a regular old coupe that got shipped to ASC for a lobotomy. This G37 convertible is the real deal. It has unique bodywork, an upgraded interior and a three-piece retractable hardtop. Add to that Infiniti's new 3.7-liter V6 and this G37 drop top should have no trouble erasing the bad taste left behind by the M30. With the top in place, the G37 convertible looks almost identical to the coupe. It's somewhat of an illusion, however, as the convertible's body panels are unique from the A-pillars back. The result is a car that's actually 1.1 inches wider overall. The rear track is also 1.4 inches wider, as the rear suspension was modified slightly to make room for the folded hardtop. Overall, the G37 convertible is roughly 442 pounds heavier than the comparable coupe. Cargo capacity with the top up is actually better than the coupe at 10.3 cubic feet (versus the coupe's 7.2 cubic feet). With the top down, the space nearly disappears as the capacity drops to a little less than 2 cubic feet of space. There will be two models available — base and Sport 6MT. Both get the same 325-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 as the coupe. The base model gets a seven-speed automatic transmission as standard, while the Sport model comes with a close-ratio six-speed manual. No fuel-efficiency figures are available yet, but expect them to be slightly lower than the coupe's numbers of 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Every G37 convertible gets an extra dose of aluminum trim on the dash, doors and center console. Both the dual-zone climate control system and the optional Bose audio system have the ability to compensate for top-down driving. On the less technical side, there's also a rear-seat windscreen to reduce cabin turbulence. Sales of the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible are expected to start in the spring of 2009. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but expect to see the base model come in just under $40,000.

Volvo will use technology from the environmentally optimised C30 1.6 DRIVe in its bid for outright victory in the 2009 Swedish Touring Car Championship (STCC). The efficiency of the current bio-ethanol (E85) fuelled C30 STCC 'Green Racer' will be further enhanced by the aerodynamic solutions developed for the diesel-powered C30 DRIVe, the first model to be launched under Volvo's aggressive roadmap for reducing C02 emissions. The race cars' flat under-body panels, diffuser and rear wing have been taken straight off the C30 DRIVe production line. Traditionally, manufacturers use technical solutions developed for their race cars to improve production cars. Volvo Cars is reversing the process by using technical know-how from the C30 DRIVe model to improve the aerodynamics of its 2009 STCC race cars.

Urban drivers often pick mini and microcars because they’re affordable, fuel efficient, and easy to park on city streets. Fender-benders are hazards of urban driving, and just one of them can add up to thousands of dollars in repair costs because car bumpers don’t adequately protect vehicles from damage. None of the bumpers on 7 mini and microcars the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently tested earn the top rating of good, and just 1, the Smart Fortwo, is acceptable. Five out of the 7 earn poor ratings and 1 earns a marginal. The Institute evaluated results according to a new ratings protocol for low-speed tests that better represents the damage insurance claims centers assess daily. The worst performer is the Kia Rio, which sustained $9,380 total damage in the 4 tests — 2 full-width impacts and 2 corner — to earn a poor rating. The Rio’s repair bill is worse than those of most other small and midsize cars and minivans the Institute has tested. This minicar racked up about $3,700 damage, or 30 percent of its purchase price, in the full-front test alone. The Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, and Mini Cooper also earn poor ratings for bumper performance. The Smart Fortwo is best overall, with $3,281 total damage in 4 tests. Costs are relatively low for this microcar because its pre-painted plastic body panels are dent-resistant, inexpensive, and easy to replace. The Chevrolet Aveo, a minicar, is next best, with $4,490 total damage. These are the first bumper test results released under a new Institute ratings protocol that’s based on repair costs averaged and weighted to reflect real-world damage patterns. These averaged and weighted repair costs determine each vehicle’s overall rating of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor in 4 bumper tests representing full-width and corner crashes at low speeds. Weighted average repairs must be less than $500 for a good rating, less than $1,000 for acceptable and less than $1,500 for marginal. Repairs of $1,500 or more earn bumpers a poor rating. Today we are going to install E-Series Tube Steps from Westin, part number 23-2900, and we are going to install this on a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup crew cab. The body brackets will actually mount to the body bolts right here - one at the front of the cab here, and we are looking underneath the passengers side of the vehicle - and then the last one at the back of the vehicle, this one right here, it mounts up there. The bolts in the centers come out, and they get replaced by new bolts that come with the kit. Okay, we will start off with the rear passenger body bolt. Then we will take a bracket and our hardware and run a bolt right through and thread it into place. We are just going to snug them down for now, and we will tighten up everything as our last step. The front bracket actually gets a spacer on top, and the long bolt goes through just like before. All right, next we will attach our center bracket. And what is going to happen is we are going to use the center hole, here - not the slot, but the center hole. You have to be able to get this T-bolt inside. And there is a hole right behind the sticker, so we have to pull off the sticker, put the T-bolt into it and out the hole, and then put our center bracket into place. Make sure the bracket fits along the body panel like this. Again, we will leave everything loose and then we will readjust it when we put the tube on. All right, next we are going to install our bracket that goes from the frame to the bracket right here. It is going to fit just like this. Then we will install hardware in the frame, also. And this bolt right here with the block welded to it will simply fit inside with a twist, and then we can attach our hardware. Install the bolt with the thin washers, then the lock washer and the nut. At this point we can install the tube steps onto the brackets that go to the body mounts. So, let us just hold it up in the air and start threading them in. All right, next we will do the center bracket right here. And we left the tube loose so we can move this around and get our center bracket lined up. We will run our flat washer, lock washer and bolt and just thread it into place. And with that, we can start snugging down all the bolts. All right, once you get those bolts torqued down, go ahead and hand tighten the rest of the bolts that go to the body and the brackets and to the step itself. Then you can go ahead and repeat all these same steps on the other side of the vehicle. So that covers it for our install of part number 23-2900 from Westin.
