A European study links Mary Jane...to psychosis. The BBC reports...
“Using cannabis as a teenager or young adult increases the risk of psychosis … The study published in the British Medical Journal involved tracking 1,900 people over a period of 10 years.”
The study found cannabis use ‘significantly’ increased the risk of psychotic symptoms.
“...the new study seems to debunk the thinking that people with psychotic symptoms turn to marijuana as a means of self-medication, because marijuana use in the study preceded psychotic symptoms.” WebMD
But media outlets reported a slightly different result. Rather than psychosis, many reported a direct correlation to schizophrenia.
“Researchers say they found conclusive evidence showing cannabis use can speed up the onset of serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia ...”
CNN has an entire section dedicated to the idea...
“Theories about an association between marijuana use and schizophrenia include several –sometimes interrelated - scenarios: The possibility that cannabis causes schizophrenia; that cannabis may cause people vulnerable to schizophrenia to develop symptoms...”
But a health professor tells the US News & World Report...
"This is not schizophrenia, but psychotic symptoms [but] it does determine that this is potent stuff that has the effect of eventually creating hallucinatory or psychotic experiences.”
While the schizophrenia debate may have clouded the issue, a reported for TIME says one thing is certain:
“...it's now clear that if you have any close relatives with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, it's better to steer clear of marijuana...”
This study comes on the heels of a similar study done in Australia late last year. For more information on the Australian study, click on the link on our transcript section.
