BY MALLORY PERRYMAN ANCHOR CHANCE SEALES You're watching multisource tech news analysis from Newsy. Wanna avoid a DUI check point? There’s an app for that. Actually- there’s more than one. And they’ve got some haters on Capitol Hill. ANCHOR (WPEC): “Apps like Trapster and Phantom Alert promise to warn you of upcoming red light cameras, speed traps, and even sobriety check points. But there are people who say these apps help drivers who want to break the law.” (WPEC) Last month, lawmakers asked Google, Apple, and RIM to remove the heads-up apps, saying they violate the companies’ policies by facilitating illegal activity. TG Daily reports, RIM pulled the apps, but... “...Google and Apple have refused to follow suit, claiming that the applications don't violate their terms of service.” But now - Google and Apple have agreed to review the apps - after a congressional grilling form Senator Chuck Schumer. He argues - the apps help drivers evade police. But a reporter for Philadelphia's KYW points out- most of the information used in the apps is from government agencies. The reporter talked to the CEO of Phantom Alert, who says the apps actually prevent drunk driving. JOE SCOTT (CEO PHANTOMALERT): “We’ve heard from drivers who tell us they were drinking but then they launched Phantom Alert and it said ‘DUI checkpoint out there’. And they stopped drinking. They stopped driving. They asked for a ride. FLASH Drivers who use Phantom Alert are less likely to run red lights. Less likely to speed. They’re going to slow down in school zones.” The companies behind the programs aren’t alone in defending the traffic-trap apps. According to Reason.TV- even some police departments are fans. JONATHAN ZUCK (PRES. ASSOCIATION FOR COMPETITIVE TECHNOLOGY): “The more people know, the less likely they are to get in the car in the first place. There’s even certain jurisdictions where the cops are the ones putting this information into the applications." REPORTER (REASON TV): “That’s why cops in Travis County, Texas, which includes the state capitol of Austin, are collaborating with the makers of Trapster.” And a blogger for PC World adds to the symphony of praise - saying... “...it should be pointed out that almost all of these apps include other services beyond DUI alerts. Buzzed offers a taxi finder feature based on your GPS location that lets you call a cab with just one tap. Trapster includes an FAQ on the facts of drunk driving to warn users against the unlawful practice.” Apple and Google will review the checkpoint apps and make the decision to pull - or not to pull - within a month. A Cult of Mac blogger predicts - lawmakers will probably get their way. “It’s clear senators aren’t happy....I’m sure it’s now only a matter of time before they vanish from the App Store and the Android Market.” It won’t alert you to red light cameras or speed traps- but Newsy has an app too. Winner of the 2011 Appy award in fact. Download it for free to keep up with all your tech and other news. Follow Newsy_Videos on Twitter Get more multisource video news analysis from Newsy.
