That’s according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A new report from the CDC says a third of Americans aren’t getting enough sleep. “The CDC pulled almost 75,000 people in 12 states. More than 35% said they were getting less than 7 hours a night. And there are more sleepless in Hawaii than in any other state, for no known reason. Nationwide almost 38% reported they have dozed off unintentionally, at least once in the past thirty days.” (MSNBC) The Wall Street Journal cites the National Sleep Foundation, which recommends between seven and nine hours of Z’s. Anything less has been associated with obesity and other health problems - including early death. Is it that really that bad when you don’t get enough Z’s? Syracuse ABC affiliate WSYR says - yes - it’s really that bad. “When you look at the numbers, the lack of sleep is alarming because not only it is affecting the sleepy person, but it could also have dangerous consequences on other people too. 23% of those studied have trouble concentrating, 18% found themselves being forgetful, and 11% had a hard time driving.” CBS highlights the same concern and lays out the numbers. “5% admitted to falling asleep while driving. (FLASH) Drowsy driving causes an estimated 15,000 deaths a year and 40,000 injuries. And people who work in those fields have equated driving sleepy with driving drunk because the consequences are the same.” Finally, a blogger on EmpowHer offers some tips for those struggling to clock in enough beauty sleep. “Shut off the computer and television a good half hour before bed. Wind down with a cup of relaxing tea, read a book, flip through a magazine, listen to music, and start to dim the lights. … If you have every light on in your house plus the computer and television then you could be setting your sleep up for failure.” The study’s release comes just before the United States’ National Sleep Awareness Week, which runs from March 7th to March 13th.
