McDonald's has been serving fast food for over 50 years and now the company will be offering fast jobs. On April 19th McDonald's US plans to hire 50,000 new employees for a variety of positions in 14,000 restaurants around the country. Jan Fields, CEO of McDonald's US, explains on CNN that jobs are offered everywhere for anyone.
“Jan: McDonald's is doing great across the US and the jobs will be pretty evenly divided. There are restaurant level jobs as well as management level jobs.
Poppy: Are these new jobs Jan, or are these replacement jobs?
Jan: These are actually new jobs. We are looking to add new workers to our McDonald's restaurants.”
Each restaurant is expected to take about 4 new employees, which would raise the United States McDonald's workforce to 700,000 people. JustJobs**** explains these new jobs are being created to extend the hours of many restaurants.
“The plan coincides with the rise of staffing needs as an increasing number of its restaurants stay open 24 hours a day.”
StreetInsider**** reports this massive hiring will cause the company to spend 500 million more next year on salaries, but the job spike will to do more for the economy than just lower the unemployment rate.
“Researchers have suggested McDonald's will spend $41.5 million just to train new employees, while hiring an additional 50,000 employees will translates into $54 million more in payroll taxes contributed to the broader economy.”
McDonalds’ stock increased .6% following the announcement. Market analyst Mark Kalinowski tells Barron's, while this move is garnering positive press, the timing of the move paints a picture of McDonalds’ success.
“...These jobs are a positive for U.S. employment in general, so he sees it as a good move for the company to tout it in this way ... McDonald's is taking market share in each of its three major geographies (the U.S., Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region), while rival Burger King's rocky transition to private ownership should also benefit the company.”
And WFLD adds, with this latest employment push, McDonald’s is trying to give a face lift to its career opportunities, removing the stigma of working for the golden arches.
“The company is running an ad campaign over the next three weeks. That's going to tell you that working at McDonald's is not a dead end job. It's all part of an effort to redefine what has been called a Mcjob, and the company officials say that it's about, about more than just flipping burgers. There are opportunities to move into management and employees have access to health insurance.”

TSA’s patdowns and bag scans certainly didn’t detect a drug ring out of airports in Detroit, Houston, and Jamaica. That’s because the smugglers were on the inside. Detroit’s WDIV has details.
“Investigators say the scheme was relatively simple. They say these baggage handlers would fill luggage with drugs and then put tags on them, tags like any other type you might see on a flight, with the name of a passenger on a flight from Jamaica to here to Detroit. When that plane landed here at Metro Detroit, baggage handlers like the people you see working down here, well they’d take the bag and get it by security and then sell the drugs out on the black market.”
Federal agents arrested 12 people - including 10 current or former airport employees. And as Detroit’s WXYZ says--they could be looking at some major punishments.
“Now depending on the actual charge, the penalties range from 5 years to life. The fines 250 thousand dollars to 10 million dollars. Agents say it’s a privilege to work here at the airport and be allowed in the most secure areas and if you break the law they will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.”
A follow up report from the Detroit Free Press quotes two of the arrested men’s wives. They defend their husbands because despite being arrested in connection with $4 million dollars in drugs, they didn’t have a lot of luxuries.
One woman says: "He drives a piece of crap car that I have to push in the street. ... He doesn't even have cable, for crying out loud."
And the other argues: "This is not the man I've known for 10 years … There have been no red flags, no extra money for God's sake. We have used cars. He works mega overtime."
Finally, a writer for Gather hopes this case -- dubbed “Operation Excess Baggage” will force regulators to reexamine their security policies.
“Fortunately, the airline employees were part of a drug smuggling conspiracy, and they were not smuggling explosive devices on-board passenger flights -- at least, as far as we know. ... Federal officials should consider imposing mandatory pre-and post-flight inspections of baggage on all flights or at least, international flights.”
