This video shows you that it is possible to make usable lumber out of fallen trees. I am disgusted by the number of people that pull out a chainsaw and cut up old (huge) trees for firewood, when they could be turning fallen trees into usable lumber for building projects. Or, if you are the entrepreneurial type, then sell the lumber you make for lands sake.

Cheikh Sidi Bemol Amghar The old man Translation Aric Wizenberg Snow is covering even the valley; The old woman is going to gather up some wood In order to warm up her old man. In the bed he awaits; Time has come, He's going to pass on soon. Worries gnaw at her, dry her eyes; Her hands are numbed with cold; With difficulty she ties up her bundle of firewood. The old man, in the bed, awaits; Time has come, He's going to pass on soon. A bird of ill omen shouts to the woman: "No need for this wood, you're husband is dead" "Get lost, hawk! The old man, in the bed, awaits; Time has come, He's going to pass on soon." She hurried on, thinking to the past years She lived alone, when long ago he emigrated, "Satan! I wish God would curse you! The old man, in the bed, awaits; Time has come, He's going to pass on soon." At home she finally arrives, a storm breaks She says: "God will it never end!" Wind carries along her words; The old man, in the bed, awaits; Time has come, He's going to pass on soon.

Get to know the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive foreign pest that is killing our trees and harms our forests. One way they spread is when people move firewood that is infected, even firewood from trees that look healthy.

I remember my house growing up. It had a great big Oak tree right in the middle of the back yard. That old oak was a big part of my life as a kid. I used to lie in bed during cool summer nights, and listen to the wind blow through the leaves and into my window to cool us down after a hot day running around. We had a tire swing hanging off one of the branches -- the kids from the neighborhood would come over and we could play under that tree for hours. The rule was we had to go in when the street lights came on. Later my Dad put a porch swing on that tree. Had my first kiss there too. An older couple lives there now. They love to sit under the tree and relax, talk, have an ice tea. I'm glad it's still there for them, but I worry. I've read about a tree disease called Sudden Oak Death. Once a tree like our old oak gets it, it's only a matter of time. Sudden Oak death and other diseases and bugs that kill trees spread when people move diseased wood around. Pests and diseases hitchhike on wood packaging, nursery plants, and firewood. That's not smart. Think about it: If we just buy our firewood nearby where we use it -- for our homes, or camping -- then we can protect trees like my old oak. For generations to come.
