Welcome to our series of FUN FACTS ABOUT DOLPHINS, presented by Hubbard's Marina at John's Pass in Madeira Beach Florida.
Dolphins lead a very unique life. Some of their behavior is unique to their species and very interesting indeed.
Dolphins are mammals, not fish. But like all other mammals, dolphins do not have hair. They have a hair when they are first born, just above their mouth, but it falls out within a few weeks.
Dolphins have extraordinary vision, and see just as well out of the water as they do underwater. They secret an oily substance that coats their eyes, and they can see very well at night…just like cats and dogs.
Dolphins have teeth. Anywhere from 8 to 250 depending upon the species and their age. Unlike humans, they do not use their teeth to chew their food. They use them to catch and hold it before they swallow it whole.

Welcome to our series of FUN FACTS ABOUT DOLPHINS, presented by Hubbard's Marina at John's Pass in Madeira Beach Florida.
Dolphins are usually very active creatures, but they need to sleep just like most animals. Dolphins can not sleep in the same way that we do. They must remain conscious at all times, so they rest by allowing half of their brain at a time to go into a sleep state, while the other half remains aware of their surroundings and breathing needs.
Dolphins do, in fact, have two natural enemies. The shark and the killer whale are both natural predators of dolphins.
Dolphins breathe air just like we do. They can hold their breath from 5 minutes all the way up to 20 minutes depending upon what they're doing.
Dolphins are very compassionate and altruistic in the wild. They have been observed helping injured individuals including other dolphins, whales and even humans by nudging them to the surface to breath.
