Twenty world leaders will come together in Seoul this November to discuss the state of the global economy as it emerges from the financial crisis. Together, they will take the necessary steps to reduce market volatility and move past the crisis, creating sustainable growth going forward. The fall meeting will be the fifth leaders summit and the first in an emerging country, reflecting shifts in the global economic balance and a growing understanding of the interdependence of countries and regions in the international financial system. In addition to heads of government from the twenty member countries, central bankers and finance ministers, the heads of key international institutions, including the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Financial Stability Board, will participate in the meetings, November 11-12. Member countries include the G8 developed economies along with emerging economies such as the Republic of Korea. Together, the members of the G20 represent over 85% of the world economy. Summits held to date -- in Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, and London - the G20 averted economic catastrophe. In Pittsburgh, the G20 leaders agreed that, going forward, the G20 would be the premier forum for international economic cooperation, ushering in a new system of global economic governance. In Seoul this November, the leaders will take that mandate forward, paving the way for future sustainable and balanced growth. Within the larger agenda, the leaders will continue to work to build a lasting system of cooperation -- a framework - and to reform international financial organizations and financial regulations. At the Seoul Summit, the G20 will build on past agreements, while introducing new agenda items that support the same fundamental goals. Specifically, Korea will support discussion of a system of global financial safety nets and plans to reduce global poverty and the development gap. The Republic of Korea is delighted to host this unique event, and to offer lessons learned from its recent past in pursuit of future prosperity.

BY DAN CORNFIELD ANCHOR JENNIFER MECKLES You're watching multisource world video news analysis from Newsy. It has been twenty-five years since the tragedy at Chernobyl Nuclear power plant. Scientists, world leaders, and some witnesses of the chaos look back and ahead on the 25th Anniversary. NPR’s David Greene spoke with one man who was part of the emergency crew that fought the fire in Chernobyl in 1986. "A quarter-century later, no one knows what their heroism cost. Of the 20 men in Kotlyar's fire brigade, four have died. One man had a brain tumor, another leukemia. And Kotlyar is convinced at least that those two died because of radiation." Memorials were held Tuesday across Eastern Europe for those who died. But in the wake of the recent nuclear crisis in Japan, Aljazeera reports the issues reach further than the medical risks of radiation. The report reflects the delayed alarms following the original explosion and the controversial care given to those affected ever since. "It cast a dark shadow over humanity, one unseen since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. But, unlike Japan's Fukushima nuclear crisis, Chernobyl's real lesson is not about nuclear-plant safety. It is about official arrogance and indifference to suffering, and a cult of secrecy that allows information to be shared only among a narrow elite obsessed with stability.” Russian President Dimitry Medvedev announced his plan to increase security of nuclear power stations at the G8 summit this May. The sentiment reflects the hopes of Ukrainian leaders to continue to use nuclear power safely. “Ukrainian authorities are optimistic about the future of nuclear energy. Four plants with 15 reactors produce nearly half the country’s electricity. Controversially, the plan is to build a dozen more in the next 20 years.” But while some look forward, PBS’s Miles O’Brien points out the Chernobyl cleanup is far from over. "Ukraine is asking the west for $800 million to pay for a new shelter over the old sarcophagus that would last 100 years. Beneath it is all is a molten witch's brew of radioactive isotopes, including plutonium, with a half-life of 24,000 years.. Do you think human beings are capable of keeping this thing safe for tens of thousands of years?" Gennadi Milinevsky: "If he covers it, will try to keep it safe. But this place, this area will be still not good for life." Miles O'Brien: "Forever?" Gennadi Milinevsky: "Yes. Forever, yes." Get more multisource world video news analysis from Newsy. BY MIKKEL NOEL LANZKY ANA COMPAIN-ROMERO Silvio Berlusconi is still Italy’s Prime Minister. Berlusconi narrowly survived the latest vote of no confidence Friday, but dissatisfaction with the controversial politician is vocal and widespread. euronews reports: “Even some MPs from his own side reluctantly supported the government while openly criticizing Berlusconi’s leadership. Berlusconi had squeezed by the finish line by 316 votes to 301. He was forced into having the vote after a routine budget measure failed to get through earlier in the week.” While the Prime Minister shrugged off the failure as a misunderstanding, Berlusconi will face difficulty governing the country through its current dire, economic straits. An editorial in Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera put it this way: “The anxiety and fatigue of the ruling majority does not point to any revival. If anything, it increases the sense of a government limping towards the terminus, hoping to make it to the end of the year without being forced to stop earlier.” Although nobody seriously expects a member of the G8 to default, Italy’s economy is bad. The country has had no growth in the previous decade, and its debt is now among the world’s highest, at 120 percent GDP. Irish Radio & Television gives us a look at the bleak future: “Italy's central bank today warned of a possible credit crunch as market tensions increase bank financing costs and said growth slowed in the third quarter as gloomy Italians spent less.” According to some, Berlusconi’s leadership is part of the problem. NPR quotes business reporter Stefano Feltri saying: “Berlusconi spends more time in the court or trying to escape from court to be a real prime minister. Berlusconi is one of the reasons why financial markets don't trust Italy, because they say that he's doing nothing and he's not understanding the crisis.” Even though Berlusconi’s troubles are far from over, he has shown extraordinary ability to weather both scandals and political storms. Friday’s vote of no confidence was the 51st time Berlusconi faced such a measure, which might be a world record. Transcript by Newsy.
