BY LINDSEY WOLF You're watching multisource health video news analysis from Newsy. Only a day after a court ruled against his parents’ wishes -- a high school wrestler underwent spinal surgery. Since an injury left him unable to move more than a week ago, 16-year-old Mazzerati Mitchell was getting herbal treatment from his mother -- Vermell -- who studied natural medicine. The family opted out of surgery because they feared it could cause permanent paralysis. But doctors -- and county authorities disagreed. The Delaware County Times reports a judge granted the county temporary custody and allowed surgery to move forward. An opinion piece says Vermell is delusional. “Their refusal to allow doctors to treat him is insane … the kind of insane that should allow responsible people to disregard your wishes and demands … No doubt that Vermell Mitchell is right when she says that there are cases where surgeons have opted to perform surgery when it wasn’t medically necessary. But she isn’t the least bit qualified to know when that’s true or if it’s true in her son’s case.” But, according to their lawyer, the Mitchell family thinks the court shouldn’t be involved at all. "They believe that the right of the child and the rights of the parents is more compelling than that of the state.” Vermell Mitchell insists the herbal therapy was working. She says the treatment helped her son move his arms, legs, fingers and toes before ever entering the Operating Room. But Mitchell’s family did have the opportunity to seek a second opinion. Before the surgery, they were unable to find a doctor who supported their stance against invasive treatment. She told the Fox affiliate in Philadelphia -- she thinks the hospital has ulterior motives. “I don’t feel as though they have his best interest in their hearts ... My feeling are, since this is a teaching hospital, that they are using my son as a human guinea pig or a human specimen to teach their interns here how to do this kind of procedure.” Doctors say Mitchell can come back in 6 months to get the plates surgically removed. Vermell says she will let her son decide if he wants to go through another surgery or not. Get more health video news analysis from Newsy. Transcript by Newsy.
