*******SupremeMasterTV**** – Shining World Compassion and Hero Award: True Human Spirit in the Animals’ Hour of Need. Episode: 1743, Air Date: 23 June 2011. Everywhere in the world, we can observe and be touched by acts of kindness. People from all walks of life, faiths, and cultures extend themselves beyond the call of duty to help others unconditionally. Through their noble deeds, humanity as a whole is elevated. To commend virtuous actions and encourage more people to be inspired by their examples, Supreme Master Ching Hai has lovingly created a series of awards, including the Shining World Leadership Award, Shining World Compassion Award, Shining World Hero and Heroine Awards, Shining World Honesty Award, Shining World Protection Award, Shining World Intelligence Award, and Shining World Inventor Award, to recognize some of the most exemplary, generous, caring, and courageous people who walk amongst us. Today we celebrate the noble deeds and true, loving spirit of officials from Greene County, Indiana, USA and Chen Shueh-Jen founder of the Gangshan Aranya Dog Sanctuary in Formosa (Taiwan). In the United States, more than 70 dogs were rescued from a mobile home in Indiana by the county health department and the Indiana State Police. Let’s hear from Marilyn Crays, a public health nurse for the health department, and Shane Smith, a former deputy for the sheriff’s department on how they first heard about the dogs’ perilous situation. The way that we usually hear of these incidents is a complaint. Usually neighbors in the area. We had several that had notified us about the dogs in this area. Prior to the health department getting contacted, I believe the same people that were complaining also contacted the sheriff’s department with the large number of dogs that these two people had. The dogs started getting out of the kennels and running throughout the area where they were kept at. Then again, I was contacted by the health department to do an escort with them out there in case there were any problems. What officials found when they arrived was heart wrenching and deeply saddening. I really did not believe that somebody actually had 100 dogs in a trailer. And when we arrived, and I saw many dogs on the outside, and they were in cages, (there were) very few, very few dog food bowls anywhere to feed these animals. A lot of them looked like they had scars on their bodies, and they just looked very weak. Some of them did also look sick. The main part that I noticed was when we came up on the front porch area, there was a horrible odor. The smell just permeated. It almost made you ill it was so bad. And then when the front door opened, it was just unbelievable. They had chicken wire fence and all these dogs that were in the living room and had some in the kitchen. They lived in the bedroom, in the back part of the house, and they had even new puppies back there. The dogs were allowed to do whatever they needed to do in the home. There was feces everywhere and a urine smell. The cleanliness level was not very good at that time either. The inside of the trailer was, we felt, at that time unlivable, and we were going to have to make a decision for their health and safety. We gave them 30-days to get the trailer cleaned up and everything they needed. The Monroe County Humane Association, a local non-profit animal welfare group, aided the vulnerable dogs as well. We were able to just work with these people and talk with them and they understood that maybe that situation wasn’t the best for all of those dogs. So they actually signed them over to us. Then we came back about a week later. We rescued all the dogs, brought them back to the temporary shelter where people cared for them. For about three days they received vet care. They were all treated and then we transported them to various shelters, in Indiana as well as Michigan (USA) and Wisconsin (USA). For their caring efforts to restore the health and wellbeing of humans and animals alike, Supreme Master Ching Hai honored the Greene County Health Department and the Indiana State Police each with the Shining World Compassion Award, accompanied by a letter of appreciation. The following is a brief excerpt from Supreme Master Ching Hai’s letter to the Greene County Health Department: We applaud and honor your loving efforts and faultless expertise in helping to achieve the very best arrangements for these beautiful dogs. You make our world a better place through your caring dedication to the wellbeing of both people and animals. Thank you so much for the shining example of love in action! With Great Honor, Love and Blessings, Supreme Master Ching Hai It is an honor to receive this Award for something that we don't think about every day, that we're going to go out and rescue dogs. But it's an honor to be honored for doing our work on a daily basis. I really appreciate it. Thank you! Supreme Master Ching Hai also contributed US$10,000 to the Monroe County Humane Association to assist in the purchase of veggie dog food and medical care for the rescued dogs. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We are truly touched and humbled. This is what we do and we don’t expect anything in return and so this was really humbling and we’re touched that she felt that we were deserving. As we know, advocating for the animals is a lot of work. And a lot of times we don’t have all of the resources we would like to. So this really makes a difference. Next, we travel to Formosa (Taiwan) for a Shining World Hero Award presentation to Mr. Chen Shueh-Jen of the non-profit Gangshan Aranya Dog Sanctuary, for his quick thinking and actions that saved the lives of many canines when Typhoon Fanapi hit the island. Let’s now hear from Mr. Chen about what happened when the typhoon struck the area and his efforts that night. On the night of Typhoon Fanapi, there was very severe flooding, about 400 centimeters high. I moved all the rescued dogs to the top of the big dog cage over there. Its location happened to be the right height. The flood water rose up very quickly. It was really scary. I kept swimming all night, probably the whole night till dawn. Those dogs that I was able to rescue were all saved. For his heroic, compassionate act of safeguarding the dogs’ lives in their time of need, Supreme Master Ching Hai honored Mr. Chen Shueh-Jen with the Shining World Hero Award. The following is a reading of Supreme Master Ching Hai’s letter of gratitude to the gallant Mr. Chen: Dear Mr. Chen, It is with great pleasure and gratitude that we present to you the “Shining World Hero Award.” This Award is presented in recognition of your courageous rescue of hundreds of our beloved friends in the animal kingdom – the intelligent, kind hearted and loyal canines. Earlier this year a severe storm caused major flooding across Formosa. Gangshan Township was among the worst hit, and unfortunately your sanctuary was flooded to a height of four meters. You were alone at the time when the flood hit, choosing bravely to stay with hundreds of frightened, wet, cold and despondent dogs as their protector with rapidly rising waters. It was a critical and difficult situation. Immediately thinking of the 400 residents’ needs and using great initiative, you stacked up their cages to create a higher ground and encouraged them to seek refuge above the waters! It was dark, making the work dangerous and hard, and along the way you received many cuts and bruises. Showing great love and concern for their wellbeing you swam around looking for food to uplift their spirits. After dramatically and successfully rescuing almost all of them, it was then two long days in freezing cold conditions before being rescued. Mr. Chen, in your wisdom you know the sanctuary’s residents are members of our extended family of living beings, and as such, you were willing to sacrifice your own life to save theirs. Such selfless bravery and dedication for our co-inhabitants is rare, you are indeed a man amongst men, and a shining light of nobility. Sir, we hope that your lucky dogs have recovered fully and your much needed sanctuary is rebuilt better than ever before. We herewith offered our little humble part. For your outstanding courage and selfless act of sacrifice, for your heart-felt loving care, and for being a dedicated and noble role model, we hereby applaud and celebrate the heroic deeds of Mr. Chen, Shueh-Jen, Founder of Gangshan Aranya Dog Sanctuary. With Great Honor, Love and Blessings, Supreme Master Ching Hai Thank you. It’s my great honor to accept the Shining World Hero Award, which is presented by Supreme Master Ching Hai. I really send my deep appreciation to Supreme Master Ching Hai for giving a hand to the 400 dogs at this time. On behalf of these dogs, I’d like to give my sincere thanks to Supreme Master Ching Hai. Supreme Master Ching Hai also provided 40 packs of vegan dog food and US$10,000 to the Gangshan Aranya Dog Sanctuary. Mr. Chen was in the midst of rebuilding the Sanctuary in partnership with an organization called Animal Rescue Team Taiwan when he received this unexpected gift. Some part of the construction had not been completed yet. Coincidently, Supreme Master Ching Hai helped us and the US$10,000 happened to be needed to complete the construction. Supreme Master Ching Hai granted the US$10,000 just in time to help us make arrangements for constructing this side. So, this money granted by Supreme Master Ching Hai was really important. It did play a significant role in completing the follow-up construction. In addition, Mr. Chen received a selection of Supreme Master Ching Hai’s books, including the #1 international bestsellers “The Dogs in My Life,” “The Birds in My Life” and “The Noble Wilds,” a number of her DVDs and CDs and a reusable “Be Veg, Go Green 2 Save the Planet” bag. Yes, “Be Veg, Go Green 2 Save the Planet.” I hope we together spread the power of love to the whole world with this common idea, and also give impetus to saving the planet through the power of love. Our earnest thanks Greene County Health Department, Indiana State Police, Monroe County Humane Association and the Gangshan Aranya Dog Sanctuary for the life-saving service you provide for both the humans and animals in your respective communities. May your wonderful work continue to shine a beacon of light on many more souls. Cherished viewers, thank you for joining us today on our program. *******SupremeMasterTV**** – Aulacese (Vietnamese) Chèo Traditional Opera: A Hundred-section Bamboo Tree - P2/3 (In Aulacese). Episode: 1750, Air Date: 30 June 2011. Today’s Enlightening Entertainment will be presented in Aulacese (Vietnamese), with subtitles in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Mongolian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Thai. Âu Lạc (Vietnam) is a nation that has a long-standing traditional culture. Aulacese music is very rich; since ancient times, there have been many musical instruments that move the soul with a wide variety of sounds like those of the copper drum, gong, lithophone, bamboo xylophone, cymbals and panpipe. In 2003, Elegant Music, a form of Huế royal music, was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an intangible cultural heritage of the world. Âu Lạc’s music represents the unique features of each region, for example, Quan Họ folksongs in the North, Huế tunes in the Central, and cải lương (modern folk opera) in the South. In addition, there are many other forms of music, including hò (work songs), lý (village songs), ceremonial songs, Aulacese classical opera, chèo traditional opera, Hồ Quảng opera, and so on. Indeed, music has been deeply instilled in the hearts of people in this beautiful country, and has been cultivated until this day. Northern Âu Lạc has a folk art called xẩm singing that is very popular in the northern plains and midland. This genre, in the old time, was performed by minstrel bands. In a gathering with a small group of our Association members some years past, Supreme Master Ching Hai was inspired to spontaneously compose and sing in the xẩm style a poem she had written in her late 20s in Germany. The poem was originally written in English which the poet herself translated into Aulacese. We now invite you to enjoy an excerpt of the xẩm singing “We Don't Live More Than One Hundred Years!” composed and sung by Supreme Master Ching Hai. I mean tonight I was nuts! But so what: Aren’t the rest of us!... Otherwise how could we carry on living, For life isn’t worth a thing!? You know that I am still in love with you! But that has nothing to do... I cannot please everybody, So I will please me! That doesn’t mean you are not right; We all have only one life! On Enlightening Entertainment, Supreme Master Television is pleased to introduce different forms of arts from Âu Lạc (Vietnam), as well as from other countries in the world, in order to share the beauty and cultures of the peoples on our planet. Chèo traditional opera is a folk theater art which originated from the regions near the mountains and from the plains of northern Âu Lạc. There are varied opinions about the beginning of chèo traditional opera: the earliest time is believed to be in 4th century BCE and the most recent is 14th century, at the end of the Trần dynasty. Chèo is a narrative genre of folk theater, recounting stories through a combination of music, singing and dance. One of the unique features of chèo is a skillful portrayal of subtle gestures and movements. During festivals, people in the plains of northern Âu Lạc often look forward to watching chèo traditional opera. The lyrics are infused with folk poetry and proverbs; tragedies are usually counter-balanced with satires. Chèo is replete with the pure simplicity of the common folk, yet equally profound in meaning. The chèo traditional opera “A Hundred-section Bamboo Tree” is based on an Aulacese legend about an orphaned young man who was very honest and hard-working. He took shelter under a bamboo tree since childhood, thus he was called Trúc, meaning bamboo. Trúc was in love with Mai, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. Neither hesitating to move mountains to fill up the sea nor betraying poor friends for wealth, a love in the fashion of Trúc and Mai has become a subject for poetry and prose to imply absolute faithfulness. The story not only praises human love but also exalts the quiet blessing of nature toward humankind, as symbolized in the affection and protection of the bamboo tree toward gentle Trúc. We now invite you to enjoy part 2 of the chèo traditional opera “A Hundred-section Bamboo Tree,” written by playwright Phan Tất Quang, with performances by Mạnh Huấn as Trúc, Thu Hằng as Mai , Phúc Lợi as Landowner , Thanh Tùng as Clown Jackfruit , Lã Khương as Clown Guava , Kiều Oanh as Matchmaker , Thanh Mai as Miss Nhài Mạnh Phóng as Village Chief , Bá Dũng as Son of a Rich Man , Tuấn Tài as Bamboo Deity , and other artists. Please join us next Thursday for the conclusion on Supreme Master Television. Thank you for watching Enlightening Entertainment. Please stay tuned to Supreme Master Television. Up next is Words of Wisdom. So long for now. The rich landowner was known to be the wealthiest man in the area but he had yet to have an heir. Thus he adopted an orphan girl named Mai with the motive of making financial gains in the future. As Mai was growing up, she turned into a beautiful and capable person. Trúc, who had been working diligently, intended to quit because of the miserly landowner. Knowing that Trúc and Mai were fond of each other, he promised to marry her to Trúc if Trúc agreed to cultivate barren land for three years. Being trusting, Trúc worked hard in faraway fields for three years. Meanwhile, the landowner accepted a powerful family’s proposal. Feeling pity that honest Trúc was betrayed, Mai tried to find a way to inform him. You’re very dutiful! But in the past you already arranged my marriage, a pledge of love can’t be waved aside. Now I find your intention to be different. I don’t know how to handle your instruction. What to handle? What better option can you find if you turn down this one? They are of the same social status as we, with a lot of land and luxurious houses. For wedding presents, they offer 100 sheets of fine silken fabric, blankets made of regal crepe, seven-treasure bed, and eight-fairy mosquito net. Oh my! The bride is to be honored by the village notables from the two families. She’ll walk on a red carpet. She’ll wear a Nghệ hat while the groom holds a Chinese fan in his hand. Respected Father, you said: They are of the same social status as we, with a lot of land and luxurious houses. So, you plan to marry me off to... To the rich man’s son. Oh! How is that possible? In three long years working for the in-laws, he has plowed the field, rain or shine. And you... If one lives in a temple, one has to sweep the banyan leaves. He’s from a poor family, and the other is from an honorable lineage. Just listen to me, child. I bow to you a hundred times, Father. I’d rather marry a poor husband than covet a wedding offering of gold and silver and let him endure all the bitterness. A disobedient child will go wrong 100 ways. O Father! My goodness! When I raised you, I’d hoped to rely on you one day. This is the time to tell the grapefruit from the shaddock. You’re a landlord’s daughter, and he’s just a hired farmer. Instead of a corn plant, you choose a cactus. O Father! I’m not a fool. I beg you. I wouldn’t listen to you. Where are you, Nhài? Yes. Bring your mistress inside for make-up. Father, I beg you! Go inside! (Father!) Go! Go! O mister, O sir! O sir, O sir! Jackfruit! A drought, a drought! Drought? What drought? When it rains, you’re in for a prosperous time, sir. How can it rain now to talk about prosperity? Respected sir, it’s like this. When rain falls, the water level rises. Isn’t it time for prosperity, sir? How can it rain in such a condition? Rain! It’s impossible. Rain! It won’t. I already said that... Sir, if it doesn’t rain, why then the termites are coming out? What? There are termites? Yes. But no male termites. I looked around, and only see one female termite. O sir! That termite is inlaid with gold and silver all over her body. Jackfruit! (Yes.) Are you referring to Ms. Matchmaker? Yes, sir. She’s inlaid with gold and silver all over? O sir! She’s loaded! Jackfruit! (Yes.) Go prepare for me a new set of clothes to greet my guest. (Yes.) Frankly, the matchmaker is me. I’m famous in matchmaking. On behalf of the marriage god, I’d tie any matrimonial thread. O sisters! (Yes.) The young master is from an opulent family. The rich landowner’s daughter is graceful and hard-working. My young master brings silver areca and golden betel as an offering to ask for her hand in marriage. As luck reckons yours truly, Heaven bestowed wealth upon me. Both families are opulent. Vương Khải and Thạch Sùng join as in-laws. Once this marriage is realized, I’ll definitely be rich. But... O sisters! (Yes?) But the groom is not only ugly, he’s also physically deformed. I must manage this well. That’s right. She’s in love with the farming boy. If the groom is to come over now, she’ll definitely pull a wry face at him. Therefore, on this engagement day, I must hide him away and manage it cleverly. The wedding must be held right way after the engagement. The needle in the bag will be discovered sooner or later. Last night, the bindweed birds sang at the gate. This morning, they twitter at the back of the house. I believe that a precious guest will visit me. Indeed... Servants! Yes. Bring betels and tea! Yes. There you are! Respectful greetings, my brother. Please have a seat, Ms. Matchmaker. As today is an auspicious day, I’m bringing over a tray of betel quids. After listening to your instruction a few days ago, I went back to report to the other family. Anything our family requests will be adhered to by them. How precious! Since my young master is a son prayed for, he has been much pampered. And his family owns many paddy fields. No one is as good-looking and capable as he is. Many proud young women were attracted to him. He’s declined them all and keeps asking for Mai to be his wife. How precious! It’s indeed a predestined marriage. Yes, and they’re very well matched! Servants! (Yes.) Go outside to invite the young master in for tea. (Yes.) Please wait for a little while. Why wait? According to rituals, the groom is supposed to come over, but please give him some time. Why? It’s hard to believe that such a handsome and intelligent man is so timid. In such broad daylight, he wouldn’t dare come over. Only at dusk would he go out for a short while. How very precious! When it’s dark, he’ll come to attend to you. All right. Sisters! (Yes.) Bring in the offerings. To rejoice at her engagement, we bring the ring and betel quids. Silken fabrics, sparkling gold and silver are to deeply please her, especially the resplendent things. O sister! There you are, Trúc! Are you done with the farming work? Why did you leave the farm? For three years, I’ve lived with meager meals and one-hearted devotion. But... I know, I know. For your three years of hard work, I’ll grant you a paddy field if you want. I don’t need paddy fields. How about a buffalo? I have no need for buffaloes. What about a tile-roof house? I don’t need the tile-roof house. Strange! The paddy field, you don’t want. The buffalo, you don’t take. Or you worry that you’re not paid properly? Then what do you want? I only want you to keep your pledge. Don’t let it be like a water-fern which flows away upon contact with the water. Please honor your words. Don’t be like a butterfly that comes and goes. So, that’s what it is. Look, Trúc! The bamboo string used to tie the cake is unchanged. My promise is as firm as the nail on the post. Who sweet-talked you into coming back and saying this ill-founded thing? Need anyone tell me? Good and bad news travels far and wide. You marry off your daughter to a wealthy family. Oh my! How cruel is worldly rumor! A successful man often has many enemies. Seeing someone who lives righteously, the wicked fabricate tales. Fabricating? So, who brought over those gold, silver and betel quids for a marriage proposal? Are you choosing a son-in-law from an opulent family and having no regard for me? How come you don’t keep your word? Aren’t you afraid of Heaven’s punishment, living like that? There are righteous and unrighteous ways, O sir. There are righteous and unrighteous ways, O sir. Why do you favor gold over righteousness and kindness? I’ll keep my vow of faithfulness to Mai. No wonder! You’re mistaken. Heavenly flame isn’t the ghost-light. Why rush to blame an honest person? My goodness! While Mai waited for three years, I counted every day as well. Pitying you, I took care of every single thing. Here! Come take a look! I’ve prepared a wedding gift of fresh betel quids to compensate all your hard work. I know you’re poor, so I’ve taken care of everything. Is it really so? Yet, you hate me, resent me, and intend to wreck everything. Fine, if the affinity is unfit, and love is ill-fated, you’re free to go to another place. I’ll generously untie the love knot and undo the pledge to please you. No, no. For three years, I’ve lived with meager meals and one-hearted devotion. I’ve tried to fulfill my vow of faithfulness, never once changing my mind. But the wedding can’t take place now. Why not, sir? Because I’m still concerned about the villagers’ sneering. What do they sneer at? Because water never flows upward. Since when did the bride’s side ever prepare wedding gifts? But I’ve labored for three long years. I know, I know. I know you’re poor, so I didn’t ask you for anything. But I must be cautious anyhow as worldly criticism is cruel: “Wait, the groom has no wedding gifts!” You’ve worked for the bride’s family for three years and I know you’re poor, so the wedding offering is waived for you, but you must find for me something. Yes. What would that be? A hundred-section bamboo. A hundred-section bamboo? Yes. That’s the only wedding offering. A hundred-section bamboo. After 3 months without the offering, the pledge is considered null. You’ll search for it until your bones rot. I wouldn’t marry my daughter to a penniless man. O Trúc! (Yes.) Good luck on your trip. I’ll wait for you at home with much longing. Have a good trip! Alas, what a strange wedding gift! But as I love her, what hardship and danger could deter me? I’ll travel thousands of miles, crossing rivers and mountain passes. I’d overcome all difficulties and perils. At the distance are mountains and clouds, I’m crossing the streams and brooks. Alas, a hundred-section bamboo would reach the sky, where will I find it in the deep forest amidst chilling mountain wind? It’s been ten days of pouring rain and scorching sun. I’ve crossed five mountains and ten hills. I’ve seen a hundred bamboo trees, none has a hundred sections. High mountain and thick forest, reaching the sky. Much affection I send to the mountain bamboos. Much love tugs at my heart all night. I long for the sight of my beloved, awaiting the day to share our newly made hat. Like the green bamboo tree, you provide cooling shade where I recline. Morning and evening, I befriend only the bamboo tree. When will our love turn into a happy marriage? How strange! Jubilant and melodious music. The entire forest, the branches and leaves sway. Streams stop rippling, birds stop chirping. O! From afar comes the bamboo’s sound. How unusual! The thick bamboo grove and dense forest suddenly open up to let me go through. The path is filled with scented grass and flowers. Rainbow cloud is giving me cooling shade. The sound of bamboo’s afloat and melodious. Is this a reality or a dream? O man of virtue and honesty, you’re like a fresh breeze and morning sun. Your kindness and affection are sea-vast, mountain-high. Prizing kindness and righteousness, I help the kind and righteous man. Who are you? Your kind look resembles the bamboo at the front alley, your voice gentle like a breeze in the countryside. I am the Bamboo Deity who has been with you from dawn to dusk. Since your childhood, the bamboo cradle was your companion. The bamboo at the alley endures rain and shine to share with you joys and sorrows throughout the years. I’ve helped you overcome hardships. Now suddenly in the wind I heard your lament and prayer. The earnest sound of the flute moves the mountain and forest. As good affinity allows, I’m going to help fulfill your wish. Respected Deity, your love for me is as immeasurable as leaves in the forest. Your help is as immense as ocean and sky. You’ve protected me through rain and shine. You nurtured me through my childhood and sheltered me in the chilly months. I grew up in a world of bitterness, yet still follow your upright way. But what I dream for is so difficult to obtain. Don’t worry! I’ll help you realize it. Is it wealth you are after? Then I will satisfy you with all the precious gems, gold and silver. Respected Deity, not many are blessed with great wealth, but this is not what I wish for. Really? This is not what you wish for? (No.) You’re poor but you care not for gold and silver. Perhaps you wish for a beautiful fairy? All right, I’ll help you. Five-color clouds are floating around the purple cavern amidst a stretch of lush mountains. The lotus dais awaits someone to come and fulfill a predestined affinity. I’ll give you a choice. Pick a blossoming flower in the wild, be it apricot, gourd, or bamboo, each with its own beauty and grace. No, Respected Deity. How many worldly people could meet a fairy? Few are so fortunate as to chance upon a golden affinity. I’m grateful that you care for this humble person, yet a vow can’t simply be brushed off. I once promised a life-long bond with Mai. How could I change my heart and disregard my vow? Practicing benevolence is hard, doing good deeds is wise. For years, you’ve been known as a virtuous man who covets neither beauty nor fame and gain. Your faithfulness has been tested. I now will help you obtain the one-hundred-section bamboo you wish for. I’m very grateful to you. O, the one-hundred- section bamboo tree! Now, son! (Yes.) The hundred separate bamboo sections will be connected as you say “Join now!” three times. say three times “Join now!” Correct! They will immediately be joined into one long stalk, extending into the cloud. I’m deeply grateful to you. Wait! It’s difficult to travel through forests and hills with such a long bamboo tree. Tell the one hundred sections to disjoin by saying three times “Separate now!” Say three times “Separate now!” The bamboo sections will separate instantly. You may bundle them up to bring them home. Set out now, as the way home is very far. I’ll help the righteous man to enjoy a happy marriage. I’m very grateful, Deity. The one-hundred-section bamboo tree extends high into the clouds. Wind after wind can hardly move it. Rain and shine, day after day, its root is deep and strong. All right. It’ll be done sooner or later. Today, you must keep in mind what I told you. All right. Etiquette, family tradition, local custom and national laws, I know them by heart. But I’m getting closer. You must drag the bride here for me. You can’t rush like that. There are the wedding ceremony and the introduction to both families before she can go to her husband’s home. Today you must take it easy. Take it easy? What is that anyway? That means you must speak gently. Gently? You must walk with ease. Walk with ease? Let me try it for you to see now. You’ve gone away, where can I find you? I’ve languished from longing. Now I’m faced with a perplexing situation. My father wouldn’t give me time; he even arranged the wedding today. How ironic is the marriage god’s arrangement! Why heartlessly tie me in wrongful wedlock? Desiring gold, he disregards affection and betrays you who labored long and hard. You went away, let me follow you. Let me go with you, O beloved!## O love! Cold wind, scorching sun and rain, I’ll accept all. Like a bird flying over streams and mountains, I’ll follow you. O love! Dear Nhài! Nhài! (Yes.) Has your mistress taken the medicine? She did, sir. Your mistress is still under treatment. Don’t let her go far. And you stay around in case she needs your help. Don’t spoil yourself with idleness, understand? (Yes, sir.) Mai, my child! (Yes.) Later, the groom’s family will come to ask for your hand in marriage. So be prepared, my dear. Respected father! What is it, dear? It’s said in books that “At home, one submits to her father.” Right. Obeying you is what I always bear in mind.

*******SupremeMasterTV**** – Courage and Dedication Combined: The Search Dog Foundation and the Bay Area Recovery Canines. Episode: 1758, Air Date: 8 July 2011. Search-and-rescue dogs serve on the frontlines locating people missing after natural disasters, lost children, injured hikers and others, being ready at a moment’s notice to bravely endure the elements and save lives. Supreme Master Ching Hai, world renowned humanitarian, artist and spiritual teacher, speaks of her admiration and concern for these devoted canines. And I saw many dogs, you know, they used for rescue mission. Oh, they just walk in like nothing, but I feel so bad about them. The dogs walk in the sharp, broken glasses or anything like that, even chemical leaking or anything, or germs or danger. And these are precious dogs. They have been trained for years. And they even lay down their life for anyone at command. You have to protect that dog. To show Her loving support for search dogs and their human partners, Supreme Master Ching Hai has generously contributed over US$80,000 to search-and-rescue teams in 18 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, South Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Panama, the Philippines, Slovenia, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA. Today’s program features two of these courageous groups: the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (Search Dog Foundation) in Ojai, California, USA and the Bay Area Recovery Canines (BARC) in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA. Founded in 1996, the Search Dog Foundation (SDF) is a non-profit organization which professionally trains search and rescue canines, and then places them at fire departments across the United States at no cost. One of the most unique aspects of this organization is where the dogs come from. Executive director Debra Tosch now gives us insight. The mission of the Search Dog Foundation is to strengthen the emergency response in America. And we do that by rescuing dogs from shelters and breed rescue groups, getting them trained by a professional trainer and then pairing them up with firefighter partners. And then we actually train the firefighters to be able to do disaster search. The solid training provided by the Search Dog Foundation make the firefighter and canine teams ready for deployment anywhere in the US and even abroad. We have had teams respond to 9/11, the World Trade Center, we’ve had teams respond to Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita, and more recent hurricanes. And I would say the biggest challenge was when we had teams respond to Haiti, to the earthquake over there. While in Haiti, the valiant search and rescue dogs and their human partners located and saved the lives of nine people who were trapped beneath massive mounds of debris. The first find was locating three girls buried in a four story building. They were literally four stories down. And the dog indicated that there was somebody in there. And they do that by barking. They get the scent of people that they can’t see, and then they bark until the partner gets there. And so, sure enough as soon as the dog alerted (everyone), they started, working around the building and calling out and they heard somebody answer. And it took them six hours, but they pulled the three girls out. In Haiti there was another woman. And she happened to be taking a nap when the earthquake happened. And she was in the bed face down. And when it collapsed, the ceiling was gently (lying) on top of her. And so she was pinned for three days, when they got to that area to search. And they were able to locate her. And they had to crawl in spaces that were only 18 inches. She had no injures other than being dehydrated, but she couldn’t get out. And had they not been able to locate her, she would have perished there. When the Search Dog Foundation looks for a new dog candidate to prepare for search and rescue work, there are several key qualities he or she must possess. The canine must be emotionally stable, sociable, unaffected by other dogs and noises, but also playful. We’re looking for dogs that have very high energy. Dogs that are obsessed with toys, any type of toys. And then they have to be in good physical shape too. But they’re running up and down these rubble piles, so we have to make sure that they’re very healthy. We x-ray their hips and their elbows to make sure, because we don’t want to cause pain in the dog later on. So we have to make sure that they’re able to do this. Supreme Master Ching Hai contributed US $1,000 to the Search Dog Foundation to help them buy additional safety equipment for the noble and gallant canine rescuers. Our local Association members presented the check to Debra Tosch on Supreme Master Ching Hai’s behalf. Oh, well thank you so much because, I’ve been out there and I can tell you first-hand it truly does make a difference. So thank you so much for helping us meet our mission. The Foundation was also given a copy of Supreme Master Ching Hai’s #1 international bestseller “The Dogs In My Life.” The group later sent a warm letter to Supreme Master Ching Hai. The following is a brief excerpt: We are humbled by your confidence in our work of rescuing dogs, and saving lives … We would like to extend a wholehearted WELCOME to you as a new member of the SDF family. Thank you for being Part of the Search! Debra Tosch, Executive Director Abby, Executive Search Dog The Bay Area Recovery Canines (BARC) is a volunteer non-profit organization which provides free of charge canine search and rescue teams to assist law enforcement officials in finding missing and lost persons. We met BARC’s president, Heather Roche, a 20-year veteran of search and rescue work, and her partner, Red in Williamsburg, Virginia. We specialize in some (of) the harder cases. We get called in by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. So we actually travel throughout the US on missing person cases. This is Red. She’s actually 10 and half. And if you can hear her, she’s ready to go. She thought we were going to come out here and start training already. So she was all excited. She’s cross-trained. She’ll find live people as well as deceased because we do a lot of evidence searches. And, missing people, even cold cases, 20 years out. But she’s also a (Federal Emergency Management Agency) FEMA disaster dog. So she’ll search the rubble. She was my youngest (dog) at 9/11 (World Trade Center) and worked the (9/11) Pentagon. And then she was my primary (dog) at (Hurricane) Katrina, at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. And she’s done things like tornados, and other small collapses as well. So dedicated is Red to her work, that she will sacrifice her own safety to protect or save the lives of others. She recently sustained a serious injury in a rescue mission. A little over a month ago, she was working a three-story house that had caught on fire and unfortunately the homeowner was sleeping and was still inside the rubble. And she was trying to get her way to where he was located. And there wasn’t much left of the building. And where she was, started to collapse. And so she had to ride out the slide. In that, she cut herself on either a nail or sharp metal, unfortunately, all the way to her bone and cut an artery. But we were lucky. We were there with the fire department and paramedics. And the paramedics took care of her, wrapped her up and actually the fire marshals rushed her off to a vet right away. And she’s healed. She’s totally fine. They did a great job sewing her up. And even after she got hurt, she still kept on searching because she just loves to do it. We also met another delightful team from BARC: Cathy Dodgen and her canine partner, Rusty. This is Rusty. Rusty is a Border Collie I got as a rescue out of an abuse and neglect case from North Carolina (USA). So I got him at about six months old, he’s seven now. For six years he’s worked finding live people, and now I’m training him to look for human remains as well. Throughout the years, Ms. Dodgen has trained several dogs. All of my search dogs actually came out of rescue. So I take the dogs; I rehabilitate them physically, mentally, emotionally; and then, a lot of dogs I pass on to good homes. And then, some dogs they're really energetic, and so they turn out to be a really good candidate to do search with. On Supreme Master Ching Hai’s behalf, our local Association members presented BARC with her donation of US$1,000 for the purchase of safety equipment for the group’s canine members. Thank you so much for this. It helps us be able to continue and not only help the missing persons (alright, Red’s ready to go), but it helps the family. Ms. Roche was also given a copy of “The Dogs in My Life.” Thank you, I can’t wait to read it. And (I) imagine she (is) like us. Our dogs are our partners, and they're our lives. The Bay Area Recovery Canines later sent a thoughtful letter to Supreme Master Ching Hai. The following is a brief excerpt: Your generous gift will allow us to insure that each BARC dog will be outfitted with an ice bed for hot weather searches, and a warming bed for the cold ones. In addition, each dog will be fitted with a cooling vest that will keep them more comfortable while working in heat and humidity, and insure that they will not be in danger of heatstroke. Once again, we send our heartfelt thanks for your generosity. With Best Regards, Cathy Dodgen, Secretary Bay Area Recovery Canines Many thanks to all the canine and human members of the Search Dog Foundation and Bay Area Recovery Canines for your devotion to saving and protecting the lives of others. You are truly an inspiration and a light to us all. Author and former Soldier Trent Reedy speaks about his experiences in Afghanistan and how they inspired him to write his new novel "Words in the Dust". A former high school English teacher from a small town in Iowa, Trent joined the National Guard to get money for college. At the time he never could have imagined a few years later his country would be at war and he would be on the front line. Far away from the lush green countryside of Iowa Trent would find find himself and his mindset transformed by the humble and hardworking people who attempted to scrape by in a dusty desert town in western Afghanistan nicknamed "Hell City". This is a story of hopes destroyed and hopes reborn, of the unimaginable twists and turns that life can take. Of the dramatic changes, some for the best and some not, that can take place based on the most random of events. It is also the story of a promise made by the author to a young Afghan girl to tell her story and be her voice to the world.

*******SupremeMasterTV**** – Traditional Folk Music from Southern Âu Lạc (Vietnam) (In Aulacese). Episode: 1770, Air Date: 20 July 2011. Today’s A Journey through Aesthetic Realms will be presented in Aulacese (Vietnamese), with subtitles in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Persian, Portuguese,Persian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Âu Lạc (Vietnam) is a nation with a longstanding traditional culture. Aulacese musical heritage is bountiful; since ancient times, many soul-stirring musical instruments have been created with diverse sounds like those of the copper drum, gong, lithophone, bamboo xylophone, cymbals, and panpipe. In 2003, Elegant Music, a style of Huế royal court music, was recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as an intangible cultural heritage of the world. Âu Lạc’s music represents the unique features of each region, for example, Quan Họ folksongs in the north, Huế tunes in the central, and modern folk opera in the south. In addition, there are many other forms of music, including hò, lý, ceremonial songs, Aulacese classical theatre, chèo traditional opera, hồ quảng opera, and so on. Indeed, the essence of music is imbued in the hearts of people in this beautiful country, and has been cultivated until this day. In today’s program, we’re pleased to introduce some of the folk songs and musical genres representative of southern Âu Lạc. At an international gathering with our Association members in San Jose, California, USA, in February 16, 1991, Supreme Master Ching Hai sang “Southern Aulacese Hò Singing,” written by composer Phạm Duy in 1956, about the gentle and bountiful land of southern Âu Lạc. We invite you to enjoy an excerpt of this song. Nhà Bè River divides into two branches. Go to Gia Định or Đồng Nai as you wish. The road to the mountain village isn’t far Pass Red Soil District, you will then arrive in Biên Hòa. In Aulacese (Vietnamese) traditional folk music, lý is a singing genre that is mostly based on folk poetry in the form of six-eight couplets. The rhythm varies between fast and slow in a recital style, so lý singing genre has hundreds of different tunes. Through simple lyrics, lý songs often describe images and feelings as experienced in life. Enhanced by tender melodies, lý is very accessible and therefore quite popular. When being close to gentle and compassionate vegan souls, the trees, plants and flowers are even brighter in color, and nature is more peaceful and beautiful, offering humans countless delicious and fragrant fruits. “How happy was the sight of fruit-laden tree! Sweet fruits filled the branches, how adorable! Tasty and fragrant yellow star fruits fell off the tree as a loving gift for him.” “Star Fruit Tree,” a Southern Aulacese folk song, written and performed by our Association members, will now be presented. Once upon a time, there was a young man who was gentle and innocent. The land, house, gold and diamonds— his brother took all, leaving him this star fruit tree. How touching was his honesty! Without thinking, he went to plant the tree and cultivated it with all his love. He waited day and night by a thatched hut for the tree to grow lush and tall, blossom and give a bounteous harvest of delicious star fruits. How happy was the sight of fruit-laden tree! Sweet fruits filled the branches, how adorable! Tasty and fragrant yellow star fruits fell off the tree as a loving gift for him. Fond of the fruits, the fairies picked them up. As they enjoyed the sweet fruits, they thanked the grower. The sun rose high in the late morning. The fairies left and had yet to meet him. They pitied him for his hard work How would they repay him for tending the tree? We wish to pay for the star fruits. Thank you. One day he hid and watched, finding that the fairies loved his delicious star fruits. Knowing that he was a kind vegan soul, they asked to repay his favor. Precious gems and beautiful pearls, gold and silver, they wanted to offer him. He said, “I do not wish for those.” A fairy offered him “Immediate Enlightenment” – the guide! O wonderful, the key is here! Purify the body and mind, meditate morning and evening. A sincere heart, a simple vegan lifestyle, he’s esteemed for his commitment to green living. This life, he’s determined to practice spiritually and become enlightened, blessed by God and Buddha. How heart-rending is the plight of animals and humans – the countless miseries they endure! O Heaven, take pity upon them! May all beings live in peace. May all be vegan and elevated in consciousness. May the world wake up and turn into Paradise. How delightful to watch the fruit-laden tree! He’s happy, so the star fruit tree is happy. He’s happy, so all the animals are happy. From now on, people live in harmony. In Aulacese (Vietnamese) culture, cải lương (modern folk opera) is a popular theater art that dates back about three centuries, when the flourishing South was a new land. Among those who settled in the South at that time were musicians from the royal palace in the ancient capital Huế. Since then, the kind of ceremonial music often heard in the palace became more widely known among the populace. Eventually, new songs were composed. Many amateur musical groups were formed, adopting music and song as a form of elegant entertainment. From about 1912 to 1915, the artists of these musical groups began to combine gestures to their songs. Since then, a new genre called ca ra bộ was born. Performers conversed; sometimes a song would be used as dialogue. Ca ra bộ continued to develop to create the theatrical art that is now called modern folk opera. According to Aulacese belief, the Kitchen God reports to the Jade Emperor on the 23rd day of the last lunar month every year about how things stand on Earth. This year especially, the Kitchen God has to ride the cloud in a hurry back to Heaven before the appointed day. To understand the Kitchen God’s hidden concern, we invite you to watch a short Aulacese modern folk opera, titled “The Kitchen God’s Report,” written and performed by our Association members. I am the Jade Emperor. Here in Heaven, life is peaceful and blissful. But looking down on Earth, I feel sorrow, because there, animals and humans are both in misery. Revered Jade Emperor! The Kitchen God wishes to see you. How strange! It’s yet to be the 23rd day of the last lunar month. Why is he here to see me? Revered Jade Emperor, the Kitchen God said that he has an urgent matter. All right, let him in immediately. Be at ease. You look haggard and skinnier. It’s because lately haven’t been able to eat or sleep well. Why? My Lord, I don’t know how is it that many humans and animals found my cottage. They flocked there more and more every day. They asked me to report to you for wise judgments. They directed loudspeakers towards my hut and lamented noisily. I had no heart to ignore them, so I have go see you before the appointed time. Quickly submit the report so that I comprehend the matters. The number of complaints this year is record-long. I typed with the speed of light and still couldn’t finish them. My computer also went on strike. It couldn’t take anymore. So I have no report to submit to you. Then what do you want me to do? My Lord, I have no written report, but I bring with me the “living” report. I think the “living” report is probably more dramatic than my “ paper” report. What is the “living” report? Where is it? Dear Lord, here it is. Everyone, keep quiet please! The animals may speak first. The beloved pig, please. O Compassionate Jade Emperor! You bestow upon humankind an abundance of nutritious and delicious vegetables and fruits. Yet they insist on turning me into food. Even my friends: cows, chickens, ducks, deer, goats, geese, dogs, and cats are also turned into roasted, barbecued and dried meat. Alas, our grief and distress are countless! Not Agree to Have My Fur Taken! NOT OK! And I am as gentle as... a rabbit! Yet humans heartlessly skin me for my fur to make coats without asking me for an “OK.” But, not only me, even the beavers, lynxes, weasels, foxes, squirrels, and seals are skinned as well. Humans cruelly massacre us for our fur. How very terrifying! Our suffering is greater than the sand in the Ganges River, O Jade Emperor! Safe Hours to Go Out. Revered Jade Emperor! Even crabs, shrimps, and fish cannot have a peaceful day. Anyone who left home without checking for “safe hours” would end up in the fishing net right away! Oh, fishing nets are spread everywhere! How frightening! O Jade Emperor! As for us whales and dolphins, we’ve saved many human lives. We’ve always done good deeds since time immemorial. Yet they heartlessly turn their benefactors into cuisine. How unjust for us! Please help us, Jade Emperor! O child! I also feel anguished! Many Masters have come to Earth, all of whom have advised humans to love all beings, but not many people follow. Listening to them, I also feel deep grief. And humans, if you want to complain about anything, do it quickly, so that I can go home soon to take my computer to the repair shop. Revered Jade Emperor! I’ve never done anything immoral in my life. I lead a pure and simple life with 3 meals a day of roasted pork, hamburger and salted-pepper fried shrimp. Yet droughts, floods, earthquakes and tsunamis keep coming my way, destroying my home. My wife and children were swept away by the flood, my father was taken to Heaven by the tsunami. And my aged mother, unable to survive the last heatwave, also left the world for good. Oh, how very unjust! Please take pity on me. I’m a good person. Revered Jade Emperor! I’m the one who suffers the most injustice. I observe all three obediences and four virtues of a woman. I have virtues aplenty. Chickens, ducks, pigs, and cows, I raise them all because I love them. I love them very much, so I raise them so that they reproduce well. Then I sell all to a dealer and I never slaughter any animal. However, epidemic diseases spread in my whole family, both my husband and son passed away. You heard yourselves just now the heart-rending cries of the animals. If you don’t want to suffer pain, don’t inflict pain upon others. Bestow love by a vegan lifestyle so that all beings may live peacefully, then you will also live peacefully. Here, it’s a gift for you. We understand now! From now on, we will love all animals. Please be so generous as to forgive us! From now on we’ll be good friends. From now on, peace and happiness will reign on Earth! Oh, happiness! Allow me to take leave, O Jade Emperor, I’m going back to my blissful cottage. By the humble cottage, verdant vegetable beds and gentle bamboo grove, simple-hearted rural people share their sweet and joyful moments, while tender human love paints a peaceful pastoral life, redolent of rice and vegetatian. “Gentle rural village, charming green bamboo grove Sound of singing mingling with the afternoon flute Love is tender for a village girl by the cottage Her prayer: may all live happily and peacefully.” We invite you to enjoy a southern Aulacese folk song titled “Rural Village” with lyrics and performance by our Association members. Gentle rural village, charming green bamboo grove Sound of singing mingling with the afternoon flute Love is tender for a village girl by the cottage Her prayer: may all live happily and peacefully. Rural villagers are gentle like soft moonlight Honest and kind, they love all beings. Young men carrying rice, walk briskly in the breeze Scents of wild flowers and ripened rice infuse the air. Rural villagers are gentle like soft moonlight Honest and kind, they love all beings. Love is tender for a village girl by the cottage Her prayer: may all live happily and peacefully. Rural villagers are gentle like soft moonlight Honest and kind, they love all beings. Sun shines, songs of peace heard everywhere. Her prayer: may all live happily and peacefully.
