The red hot quarter boils methanol, twice... A Discrepant Event is an event that defies eveything you already know. Email this one to a friend. Can you explain this anomaly? The explanantionThe intense heating allows the copper to mix with (or float up through) the nickel cladding. The sudden release of bubbles is likely an example of the "Leidenfrost" effect. The alcohol forms a vapour layer around the coin slowing the rate at which heat can escape. When the liquid stops boiling, the insulating vapour layer around the coin collapses and the coin-liquid contact is more efficient at transferring heat away from the metal. This results in a sudden rush of bubbles as the coin cools to below the boiling point of methanol. The collapse of the gas layer also reveals the new colour of the coin. This mimics an exothermic phase transition and is a dramatic way to illustrate how a physical (or chemical) change can result in a sudden release of energy.

I decided to have one intensive day in the garden and I got a lot done. First I finished clearing the main area turning the soil, then raking it and removing stones and weeds. Once that was done I made a trip to the garden centre. I bought some more compost, a spade and a hand trowel and the turf for the lawn on which the chickens will live. The turf set me back about £30, it is the more expensive option, the other being seed but that takes ages. As it is only a small area and we want to get the chicken ASAP I decided to use turf. When I got back John and I lay the turn and watered it, which did not take long. It looks a bit rough along the seems but hopefully that will start to blend in over the next couple of weeks. The garden looks very different now to what it did at the start of the day. There is still a lot of rubbish on the concrete part and clearing that will be the next task. The Scrapyard Challenge Workshops are intensive workshops where participants build simple electronic projects (both digital and analog inputs) out of found or discarded "junk" (old electronics, clothing, furniture, outdated computer equipment, appliances, turntables, monitors, gadgets, etc..). So far the workshops have been held 23 times in 11 countries with 3 different themes including the MIDI Scrapyard Challenge where participants build simple musical controllers from discarded objects and "junk", DIY Wearable Challenge where they create wearable tech projects from used clothing, and the DIY Urban Challenge where they work on public space interventions and other projects. The MIDI Scrapyard version includes a mini workshop where participants build simple drawing robots or "DrawBots" with small, inexpensive motors, batteries, and drawing markers that can also be connected to Serial or MIDI interface. At the end of the day or evening, the workshop participants have a small performance, concert, or fashion show (depending on the workshop theme) where they demonstrate and preent their creations together as a group. No electronics skills or any experience with technology is necessary to participate in the workshops.

Results of a study conducted by an independent research firm provide new evidence that a beautiful white smile has a direct effect on successful interpersonal interactions, both socially and professionally. "The Impact of Whiter Teeth on Key First Impressions" study, commissioned by Crest Whitestrips, shows that a whiter smile substantially affects how others think of you when you first meet. According to the three part study, which included simulated job interviews, simulated first dates and a quantitative online survey; more than half of the study participants were more likely to be hired (58%) and received larger salary offers (53%) after their teeth had been whitened. The study also found that evaluators expressed a greater interest in continuing their interaction or "date" with more than half of the study participants (54%) after their teeth had been whitened. "This study provides some of the first findings that speak to the powerful benefits of having a whiter smile," says Dr. Dacher Keltner, smile psychologist and professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. "Visible from 200 feet, it is the intense focus of what other people look at, and a sign of our warmth, confidence, and health." During the simulated job interviews, it was also found that a majority of the study participants were viewed to be more professional (65%) and more confident (61%) after their teeth had been whitened. And, on their simulated first dates, more than half of study participants were viewed to be more outgoing (59%) after their teeth had been whitened. The third part of the study, a quantitative online survey of 1,006 people, was consistent with the first two studies conducted, finding that individuals with whiter teeth have more positive attributes than individuals with stained teeth across the following variables: financial success, trustworthiness and professional success. Regardless of gender, age, income, education, employment or marital status, participants came to the same conclusion. Produced for Crest

Medal of Honor Airborne™, the newest installment from EA’s critically-acclaimed Medal of Honor™ franchise which was credited with pioneering the First-Person Shooter (FPS) WWII genre when it debuted in 1999. While building on the key tenets of the franchise including historical accuracy and authenticity, Medal of Honor Airborne is set to redefine the series by introducing players to an entirely new way of experiencing a WWII FPS – namely the fully interactive Airborne experience. As the first game in the Medal of Honor series to be released on next generation platforms, Medal of Honor Airborne will ship to stores in Winter 2006 under the EA™ brand for the PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®2 computer entertainment systems, Xbox™ 360, Xbox® videogame system from Microsoft, and Windows PC. Step into the boots of Boyd Travers, Private First Class of the 82nd Airborne Division and engage in battles throughout Europe. From rocky beginnings in Sicily to war-winning triumphs in Germany, each mission begins behind enemy lines, with an intense and fully interactive airdrop. Your ability to determine your own starting point dramatically changes the way each mission plays out. View the entire operation from the air, and then control your parachute to choose your landing spot. On the ground, gather your senses and assess the terrain. A wide variety of authentic, customizable weapons are at your disposal, each with distinct characteristics. Choose your path in this free roaming FPS environment. Medal of Honor Airborne will also feature exceptionally photo-realistic characters, adding to the intensity of the cinematic, story-driven game. “Medal of Honor Airborne is a step in a new direction for the franchise. While integrating our state-of-the-art, next-gen technology into every aspect of the game, we are introducing innovations that will redefine the series and impact the genre as a whole," explained Patrick Gilmore, VP and Executive Producer at EALA. “By fully controlling the airdrop from your very first step through landing, Medal of Honor Airborne adds a new dimension of player choice by letting you decide where every mission begins and how it plays out.” The Medal of Honor Airborne development team continues to ensure that the ideals and integrity of the prestigious congressional Medal of Honor are accurately reflected in the game. The producers sought counsel from numerous expert sources to make certain the game is historically accurate and as true to the WWII Airborne experience as possible. Serving as a military spokesperson for Medal of Honor Airborne, Capt. Dale Dye, who has worked as the Military Technical Advisor for the last 7 Medal of Honor games, will help to create a truly authentic experience. Developed by EA Los Angeles (EALA), Medal of Honor Airborne has not yet been rated by the ESRB. Cool for Party Animals! Self Illuminating Hair and Body Gel for Mardi Gras - Spring Break - Party Time .- St Patrick's Day - Summer Festivals - Clubs - Raves -Beach parties This has got to be the The Coolest Hair and Body gel on the planet! The photo you see here, was taken in TOTAL Darkness. The design took me approximately 20 minutes to apply the to my skin and hair using iGlow. I used 4 colors as I wanted to try and blend them into each other to see just what kind of unusual multi glowing effect I could create ad lib. The gel was easy to apply, and I found it fascinating to use!. This somewhat clumsy "artistic endeavour"was created from someone (yours truly) who has absoloutly no painting/drawing skills as such!. If a Klutz like me can do it, what ,I wonder, could the more artisticly inclined achieve? The weird thing is, you start out in total darkness, (in front of a mirror), and as you fire up iGlow, and mix,(3 minutes) the room suddently starts to become eerily discernable as the product actually starts the process of creating its own bright light source (as quick as 20 seconds... Enough to see by ...From thence forth, its merely a case of tracing out your intended pattern with the gel, and hey presto...you got glow!. You are in essence, "painting with light. Now, for the uninitiated, "iGlow" Self Illuminating Gel is the newly improved version of the wildly popular "Voltage" Hair Gel, now discontinued, and usurped by this brash new contender to the throne of light.. The difference is: iGlow glows (amazingly so), TWICE AS BRIGHTLY as the original Voltage gel, and now FIRES UP IN SECONDS instead of having to wait several minutes for the color to activate. A patented process takes ordinary hair color and makes it extraordinary, by adding self-illuminating glow. iGlow does not rely on UV, neon or black lights to create glow. Instead, it produces its own light. Tiny, microscopic particles in the gel come together in the mixing process to produce a bright colorful glow that can be seen in partial light and in the dark for at least 4-6 hours. A true Glow in the dark product. Eco friendly. No animal testing was used in hte manufacture of this item which is another plus factor about the product. The best thing is, while iGlow is classified as a "temporary hair color" it does not actually color the hair cuticle. Rather, It "coats" the hair with color. The gel is the delivery medium for the luminescence (glow). This means it is safe for color-treated or bleached hair when used as directed. The gel has an added "day tint" which will show up on the hair/Skin under normal lighting conditions. When lighting is reduced to about half-light - After sunet or indeed in Total Darkness as in the photo ( Indoors or out) all colors emit a stunning vibrant glow.. The iGlow Gel's effect is activated when you first open the container and mix the contents as instructed using the provided applicator. Once activated, the glow will last for at least 4-6 hours. Each container is intended for one-time application but depending on the effect desired and amount of gel used, one container is typically enough for two people as a little "dab" will go a long way. Create streaks or spikes of bright glowing color, or go all out with a full Glow effect. Usage hint: Blow-drying hair for 15 -20 seconds, will increase the intensity of the brightness but shorten the duration of the glow. iGlow is meant for short-term use only and should be washed out of the hair before going to bed. To remove iGlow simply shampoo out. iGlow is safe and non-toxic,(*FDA and EU safety approved for use on the hair and skin) but is not recommended for young children 8 years or under without supervision. Glows in the dark...without UV, neon or black lights. Lights up in seconds. Glows twice as brightly as Voltage Hair Gel Hair glows brightly for Hours (lasts for 4-6 hours)! Comes in 9 great colors. Washes off easily with shampoo. Main advantages of this unique Chemiluminescent glow product: Safe and fully tested for safe use on the hair and skin. Will Glow indoors or out without any other light source. No UV, Neon or recharging of any kind required. Use for Raves, Nightclubs, Music festivals, Halloween, Xmas and New Year, Celebrations, Parties, Spring Break, Mardi Gras, Carnivals, Fundraising, Sports events, special fx in movies etc...
