Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands opens 60th edition of Keukenhof in Lisse.
By baptizing the new Spring Garden tulip, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands officially opened the 60th edition of the international flower exhibition, Keukenhof, on March 18. In this jubilee year the theme 'USA, New Amsterdam: New York, 400' strengthens the bonds of friendship with the numerous American visitors, as well as Dutch discoverer Henry Hudson. Approximately 10 percent of customers purchasing tickets from the Keukenhof box office originated from the United States. And four centuries ago, Hudson stepped ashore on what is now Manhattan — on behalf of the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the Dutch East India Company, who in those times ruled the seas — thus establishing New Amsterdam, later re-named New York. It made Hudson and the Dutch indirectly responsible for establishing the city as we know it today.

Holland is famous for its beautiful flower bulb fields that give colour to the typical Dutch landscape. The best-known Dutch flower is the tulip. In 1593, the first tulip in Holland could be admired in the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. Today, you can enjoy the vast fields of tulip and other bulb flowers in the Bollenstreek, the Noordoostpolder and Kop van Noord-Holland areas. And at Keukenhof, where over 7 million flowering bulbs can be admired every year. Holland is also famous as the largest flower exporter in the world. The Westland region and Aalsmeer are the heart of the international flower trade.
The Tulip, one of the most accurate and beautiful signs of the arrival of Spring, is the national flower of the Netherlands. Though these flowers are coveted world wide for their eloquent beauty, one of the more unique and delightful features of these Dutch ladies is that they keep growing after they are cut - growing up to 5-6 inches more while in the vase! When placed near a window, they will turn themselves towards the sun, opening more when it is warm and closing when the temperature drops.
Since 1950 Netherlands has been at the center of the world flower trade and has a good and functional trade system to facilitate the movement of cut flowers, which form a majority of flowers which are traded. Being a land of flowers flowers, both cultivated varieties and wild flowers, In every Spring , the county sights are decorated with the flowers like Daisies, Buttercups, Purple Heather, Keukenhof, and the Sunflowers. Best known among them are the Dutch Tulip and Flower Bulbs.
