BY JACQUELINNE MEJIA You're watching multisource entertainment news analysis from Newsy A star not usually on the ‘what not to wear’ list...Beyonce. The singer posed for French magazine L’Officiel for its March issue and has been receiving negative backlash from some in the fashion media for wearing blackface makeup in a portion of the shots. With an ‘African Queen’ theme behind the photoshoot, Beyonce’s ‘look’ aimed to channel Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician and human rights activist, whose music inspired her forthcoming album. (Video from TF1) A blogger for Jezebel writes, while fashion has been known to push boundaries, it’s a different story when one tries to group an entire continent full of different tribes and cultures into one skin color. “What makes someone black — or African, for that matter — is not her skin tone. [...] It's one thing to feel moved by Fela Kuti, and quite another to treat blackness as a fashion accessory, like a pair of glittery heels you put on because it looks cool.” A blogger for iLuLuOnline, who is of Nigerian heritage herself, finds the cover shoot offensive, and suggests that a little more research should have gone into this ‘homage.’ “In Nigeria we have all shades of black so I’m not really sure how this is a tribute to Fela. And I don’t even see how the clothes factor into the tribute. The only thing close to anything I’ve seen my mom wear or that I wore as a kid is the headress and even then it’s not tied properly.” But a blogger for CourtneyLuv suggests looking at the shoot as art and fashion mixed together. “I can understand the negative connotation [regarding] blackface. But being that models are blank canvases and nothing more, and designers have to dress them and paint them in such a way that it gets [people] talking whether it be positive or negative, I would say no harm no foul.” An entertainment reporter for The Scoop tells MSNBC that the media has always had an eye on Beyonce regarding skin color controversy. “[...] this comes also on the heels Tamron of a controversy saying she was lightening her skin and lightening her hair color, there is an interesting look at that on the Grio**** as well. So people are weighing in over this whether they think it’s artistic expression or whether it’s abandoning her roots.” (AOC) So can Beyonce ever win? That’s the question a blogger for MissJia**** asks after reactions on both sides of the color spectrum have sparked debate. “When a new L’Oreal ad is released, there are complaints of her face being “too light” or features being altered in photoshop so that she more closely resembles a white woman. [...] I think that most won’t be satisfied until she’s permanently ‘caramel’ and even then, it’d cause drama on either end.” A statement from the magazine says the singer ‘voluntarily darkened’ her skin for the shoot. So what do you think? Overreaction, or does this photo shoot have controversy painted all over it? Follow Newsy_Videos on Twitter Transcript by Newsy
