Tuscon NBC affiliate KVOA has the story. “Based on statistics from 2008, the CDC says Americans are dying at a slightly younger age. Life expectancy dropped from 77.9 years in 2007 to 77.8 years in 2008.” The difference equates to about a month. A writer for WebMD says it could be cause for concern, but it’s difficult to tell from one year of data. “This isn't the first downtick in U.S. life expectancy -- there have been three others since 1980, the most recent in 2005. It's too soon to say whether the current slight decline is the beginning of a plateau or whether American life span will resume its upward trend.” The CDC report also provides data on life expectancy for various demographics and breaks down leading causes of death in the U.S. Heart disease and cancer held as the two leading causes of death- making up nearly half of all deaths. Stroke fell from the third slot, replaced by chronic respiratory diseases like asthma. (Video: WBFF) A writer for the LA Times explains the shift -- and the fine print behind it. “Better treatments have been leading to a slow decline in deaths from strokes... Meanwhile, deaths from chronic lower respiratory disease have been climbing. ... But the agency cautioned that some of that increase may be due to changes in how the World Health Organization has coded and classified such deaths, so that some deaths due to pneumonia were added into the category.” And the overall dip overshadows gains made in specific populations. A writer for Bloomberg lays out the numbers. “The drop in life expectancy was mostly in the white population, which fell 73 days, while the rate among black women was unchanged at 76.8 years, and rose among black men to an all- time high of 70.2 years. The infant mortality rate fell 2.4 percent to 6.59 deaths for every 1,000 births in 2008.” The CDC’s report is based on death certificates from the National Center for Health Statistics. It includes data from all 50 states, Washington D.C., and other U.S. territories. Get more multisource health video news analysis from Newsy.

BY: MIRANDA WHEATLEY ANCHOR: JENNY MECKLES You're watching multisource video news analysis from Newsy. According to a study released by the CDC Americans are living longer. “Children born today can expect to live longer than ever in U.S. history … Life expectancy at birth increased to 78.2 years in 2009, up from 78 years in 2008.” (USA Today) But the quality of a longer life isn’t guaranteed. Dr. Keith Ayoob tells ABC why... “We’re getting a lot better at controlling diseases in the long term ... The leading causes of death are pretty much staying [flash] doctors can keep you alive with medicine and they’re better able to do that but if you want quality of life that’s something that’s still going to be up to each individual person.” And media outlets in the U.S. are reporting - length of life varies by gender, race and even location. In the U.S. “The battle of the sexes still rages on, and women are still in the lead [and] can expect to live 80 1/2 years, whereas men should expect to croak by 75 1/2 years.” (Minnesota Daily) “The gap in life expectancy between whites and African-Americans slightly increased to 4.3 years in 2009, up 0.2% from 2008.” (WebMD) And across the world “...Japan, Hong Kong, Iceland, Switzerland and Sweden have the highest life expectancy rates on average.” (Care2) Although U.S. deaths are down the U.S. News and World reports it’s the same diseases to blame - with Heart Disease, Cancer, and Alzheimer’s near the top. But EmpowHer says Americans’ bad habits are keeping them behind... “America’s history with smoking, an obesity epidemic and a lack of exercise, [means] children born in other countries are expected to outlive U.S. children” Looking for more information on the study?
