January 2007 (Medialink) -- Siemens Medical Solutions completed its transition to an integrated diagnostics company with the close of its $5.3 billion dollar acquisition of Bayer Diagnostics. This acquisition, combined with Siemens recent $1.8 billion dollar acquisition of Diagnostic Products Corporation (DPC) makes Siemens the first healthcare solutions company to integrate medical imaging, in vivo and in vitro diagnostics, and information technology within an entire healthcare network. Siemens will introduce "molecular medicine where diagnostic imaging ("in vivo") converges with lab diagnostics ("in-vitro"), all linked by information technology to provide clinicians with the tightly integrated tools needed to deliver high quality, efficient healthcare to patients. Healthcare professionals agree that the single most important advantage a patient can have when faced with a life-threatening disease is early detection. A faster diagnosis enables a quicker start to appropriate therapy. Siemens is perfectly positioned to play a critical role in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of patients across the globe.

November 2006 (Medialink) - Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in our country. The statistics are frightening - 95% of all cardiac arrest victims die before they can get to a hospital. American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines highly recommend the use of an impedance threshold device during CPR. Studies show that the device, which is about the size of a human fist, doubles the amount of blood flow delivering oxygen to vital organs, increasing a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival. In one city where EMS units regularly use the ResQPOD(r) impedance threshold device, overall resuscitation rates are up nearly 50% -- the highest in nearly 30 years. Medics from Cypress Creek, Texas, will announce those results this week at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association. Unfortunately, not all cities have brought their EMS systems into compliance with the latest AHA guidelines. The Joint Commission Issues Call to Action to Improve When you are sick, following doctors’ orders are essential to recovery. But what happens if you really don’t understand the instructions your doctor gives you? Many Americans have low health literacy, or difficulty understanding medical speak, a problem affecting more than one-third of patients in the U.S. health care system. Those with literacy issues come from all walks of life; however, educational level, nativity, socio-economic status and elderly age are all associated with lower levels of health literacy Cultural, language and communication barriers often lead to misunderstandings between patients and their caregivers, which may cause harm to these patients. To help narrow the communications gap, The Joint Commission — a national leader for patient safety and health care quality — has just issued a call to action to: Make effective communication a priority Address patients’ communication needs across the spectrum of care Change public policy to promote improved communication For more information, please visit: www.jointcommission****
