Interventional Radiologists, medical doctors who specialize in the vascular system, are urging smokers to quit. Not just because smoking causes cancer but because it damages arteries in the legs which can lead to other vascular disease including a heart attack and stroke. Most smokers are aware of cancer risk, but few know about the effects of smoking on the vascular system. Interventional Radiologists see first hand the damage that smoking causes to the arteries and the accompanying leg pain that many smokers suffer. For some the pain is so severe, it limits their ability to walk. More than 10 million Americans suffer from a hardening of the arteries in the legs, peripheral vascular disease, PVD. Diagnosis for PVD is simple. A blood pressure test compares the pressure in the ankle to the pressure in the arm, known as an ankle brachial index test. Treatment includes a supervised exercise program and stopping smoking. Some also need medication or angioplasty in the leg to reopen the artery and improve blood flow. Interventional radiologists are board-certified vascular specialists who offer minimally invasive, targeted treatments. They offer the most in-depth knowledge of the least invasive, targeted treatments available coupled with diagnostic and clinical experience across all specialties. They use X-rays, MRI and other imaging to advance a catheter in the body, usually in an artery, to treat at the source of the disease nonsurgically. As the inventors of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent, which were first used in the legs to treat peripheral vascular disease, interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive modern medicine. You can find out more information about treatment and find an interventional radiologist in your area at www.SIRweb**** Produced for the Society of Interventional Radiology

*******www.fertur-travel****/iquitos_tours.html To reach the ExplorNapo Lodge we board a speed boat, and travel on the upper reaches of the Amazon. we then enter a tributary, the Napo River, and disembark at the ExplorNapo Lodge in a rainforest reserve. The first stop is a visit to the Enthno-botanical Garden the ReNuPeRu next to the lodge. The garden shows the vast variety of medicinal plants native to the Amazon. Many have found a place in modern medicine. A canopy walkway through the treetops is an unforgettable experience. More than 35 meters high 500 meters long, the walkway offers a privileged viewing platform to observe the plants and animals that live in the trees.. including birds and monkeys, reptiles and insects that never touch the ground in their lives. Its accessible to everyone and doesnt require special skills or equipment. Suspended among the 14 tallest trees in the reserve, the canopy walkway is the longest in the world. During a boat excursion along one of the many branches of the Napo River youll spot macaws, toucans, three toed sloths and several species of monkey. This and much more is waiting for you in Iquitos. "This book covers medical advances that would once have been called miracles but are now merely routine. The patients' stories within this book yield hope, optimism, and triumph. This is the best time to come out of medical school and training. This fact will inspire and uplift everyone in the medical profession as well as all of us who must, at some point, rely on the art of medicine to see us through. -- Conrad Fischer, MD How can todays doctors not be energized and excited by breakthroughs like the ability of the current AIDS drugs to increase life expectancy by twenty-five years? Dr. Fischers zest for life and his profession is evident in his stories of personal triumphs and failures and in his deep sense of joy and accomplishment at what doctors are able to do today. In Routine Miracles, award-winning internist and medical educator Conrad Fischer investigates the paradox between medical advances, and the rise of physician dissatisfaction. Fischer surveyed more than 3,000 physicians and interviewed hundreds of patients to uncover the seeds of doctors discontent. Based upon his findings, he offers a deeply personal and compelling call to action for all of us, doctor and patient alike, to celebrate the present and the future of medicine. Conrad Fischer, MD, is the Chairman of Medicine at Kaplan Medical. He is also the author of the upcoming book "Routine Miracles: Personal Journeys of Patients and Doctors Discovering the Powers of Modern Medicine."
