*******www.beet.tv/2008/10/msnbccom-plans.html msnbc**** has plans for interactive coverage of voting results on a hyperlocal level, Charlie Tillinghast, president and publisher told Kelsey earlier today in this interview. Visitors to the site's national map will be able to see results for both states and individual counties on election night. Not just the data for political insiders, understanding how voting is tallied on a local basis is going to be of interest to a national and local audience who want to understand the process. In addition to the map, msnbc**** will have live video streams of national coverage from NBC News and local coverage in swing states from NBC affiliates. Charlie was the host of today's Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable moderated by Dan Farber, editor-in-chief of CNET News**** and Erick Schonfeld, co-editor of TechCrunch. Special thanks to Charlie and the team at msnbc**** for hosting our event. Here's a quick summary of the event on Portfolio****. *******www.beet.tv/2008/11/msnbccom-claims.html Msnbc**** is claiming an election coverage victory "by a landslide" over arch online rival CNN****. According to internal numbers, the Microsoft/NBC Universal joint venture had an astounding 53 million unique visitors to the site during the week ending November 8. This would be about 400 percent above normal traffic. Citing Nielsen Online numbers, visitors to Msnbc**** spent 13.5 minutes per visit vs. 10.5 for CNN, the company reported. Also, the site claims to have had 11.5 unique visitors on Novemer 5, the day after election day, more than CNN and Yahoo!, again citing Nielsen Online. Video streaming was huge, registering over 40 million for the week ending November 8. Much of the viewing was for long periods, an average of 42 minutes. This was driven largely by the live streaming of the MSNBC cable programming presented online. These numbers were also attributed to Nielsen. On October 28 at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable in the msnbc**** digtial cafe in New York, moderators Dan Farber of CNET and Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch questioned msnbc**** president and publisher Charlie Tillinghast and CNN**** Sr. VP and GM KC Estenson about how user interface drives online video consumption. Update: Yahoo!, citing comScore numbers, claims to have won the online election coverage. A spokesperson from Yahoo! just gave Beet.TV the video streaming numbers: Over a two day period (November 4 and November 5) Yahoo! News recorded more than 23 million video streams, the largest two-day period for video streams on Yahoo! News (Yahoo! internal data). --- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

Thursday, June 26, 2008 *******www.beet.tv/2008/06/msnbcnbc-new-ex.html MSNBC/NBC News Expands Election Coverage with MySpace with "Citizen" Journalists...Brian Williams has 2000+ "Friends" mscnbc**** and NBC News have expanded its relationship with MySpace with a new initiative to find "citizen" journalists from MySpace to cover the presidential conventions. MSNBC on-air talent, along with MySpace executives will select the journalists. The judges are Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist from MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program, along with Tom Anderson, President and co-founder of MySpace, and Lee Brenner, Director of IMPACT and Executive Producer of Political Programming at MySpace. Through the selection process, two MySpace members will be selected to cover the conventions and will contribute to MSNBC. Expanding Relationship -- Brian Williams is Very "Friendly" Beginning in May, MSNBC and NBC video clips have been prominently placed on MySpace. Several NBC and MSNBC journalists have been actively participating on MySpace with their own pages and have been building networks. Brian Williams has over 2000 friends and Chis Matthews has just over 1800. Andrea Mitchell has gathered over 1200 friends, Beet.TV has determined. For an explanation of the collaboration with MySpace, we interviewed Mark Lukasiewicz, Vice President of Digital Media at NBC News in the MSNBC/NBC newsroom at 30 Rock. (This interview was originally published in May.) Find more details on the campaign from Caroline McCarthy over at CNET News****. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

Thursday, August 14, 2008 Scoop: Flash Video Will Have Metadata In Workflow Soon, Senior Adobe Executive Says In what could be a watershed event for online video, Adobe Systems, the developer of the ubiquitous Flash video ecosystem, will introduce voice-to-text functionality into the workflow of Flash video production soon. Jim Guerard, who heads all rich media at Adobe, says in this exclusive video clip, that we will see this functionality later this year. This has huge implications for the monetization of online video as advertisers can match ads with videos effectively. This will also mark a big evolution of video search. We have seen just the beginning of the introduction of voice-to-text, notably the recent news about YouTube and the political campaigns. Essentially, this means that words spoken in a video will be automatically transcribed into metadata which is embedded in the Flash file. This is done within Adobe's Flash video editing tools, Jim explains in this video. His comments begin 25 seconds in. Jim was a speaker at the Beet.TV online video roundtable at Stanford last month where this video was recorded. His comments are in response to fellow panelist Charlie Tillinghast, president and publisher of msnbc****. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer *******www.beet.tv/2008/08/scoop-flash-vid.html

*******www.beet.tv/2008/10/newsvine-regist.html People-powered news site Newsvine has seen enormous growth since its acquisition by msnbc**** last year, receiving 963 percent more registrations and 269 percent more unique visitors, msnbc**** has told Beet.TV. I interviewed CEO Mike Davidson about the Seattle-based social news platform at the Omma Global conference last month. Newsvine aggregates stories from both large media organizations and individual contributors around the world and lets members vote for the stories they think are most important. Placement of stories on the site is determined by the number of users' votes ad well as freshness and reputation. Newsvine drives consumption not only of news stories, but of online video: It's NBC Nightly News Discussion Club, launched in January, allows members to watch and comment on segments from the NBC Nightly News. --Kelsey Blodget, Associate Producer

*******www.beet.tv/2008/11/big-media-will.html With the IPO window effectively shut, the most viable exist scenario for venture-backed online video companies is a sale to an established media concern. So what do acquirers want? According to CNN**** general manager K.C. Estenson, while CNN has a huge audience, it needs verticals--audiences within particular categories. He made his comments at the Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable in New York late last month. Charlie Tillinghast, president and publisher of msnbc****, said that for companies to be attractive, they have to have a proven revenue model. He says cash position, proprietary technology and a unique editorial focus also add value. In the current financial climate, Charlie says that acquisitions by companies with cash will accelerate for start-ups willing to settle for lower valuations than they were expecting. (No news here.) Based on this shocking report on the state of venture capital in VentureBeat by Matt Marshall, the pressure on start-ups to exit is sure to intensify now. Charlie and K.C. were questioned by co-moderators Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch and CNET News****'s Dan Farber. -- Andy Plesser, Executive Producer

Thursday, July 24, 2008 msnbc**** Deploys Highly Distributed Strategy for News Video, Charles Tillinghast Explains While online news consumption is largely a destination activity akin to picking up a newspaper, Charles Tillinghast, president and publisher of msnbc****, says that a highly distributed model is essential. msnbc**** is the first national news organization to make its videos shareable via an embeddable code.
