Six Americans boarded a plane for home on Thursday after Egypt lifted its travel ban on the Non Government Organization workers. The NGOs are still on trial – a sore spot between the U.S. and Egypt. Their departure to the U.S. might not be a happily-ever-after ending for the two countries. Here’s Fox News.
“They weren’t just allowed to go free, there were terms put in for their freedom. And as we understand there was a bail price of $300,000 each that our country had to pay Egypt.”
The Washington Post said in December Egyptian authorities raided several foreign-funded NGO offices. Egypt barred the workers from leaving the country and…
“...accused the groups of operating illegally, sowing unrest and working to carry out a U.S. plot to destroy Egypt.”
The law requires NGOs to have a license from the Egyptian government to operate in the country - but it’s hard to get one. An Egyptian professor on Al Jazeera defended the law, saying there are foreign-funded groups out there trying to manipulate Egypt’s democracy to satisfy their own agendas. However, an Egyptian human rights researcher countered him saying the government is cracking down for a different reason.
“The military of course has always been looking for foreign hands that must lay behind this violence to deflect an evaluation of their own performance and their own role in the violence and using excessive force against protesters.”
Los Angeles Times says this is the most pronounced diplomatic crisis between U.S. and Egypt in decades. Lifting the travel ban might have eased tension between the two countries, but the move stirred up some Egyptian leaders. An Egyptian Parliament member gave her opinion to state TV. Los Angeles Times has that statement.
"Lifting the ban is considered a violation to the freedom of Egypt's judiciary…The American and European pressure to dismantle the NGOs’ case should be addressed, especially that the exposed conspiracy aimed at dividing Egypt and spreading chaos in the country."
But it’s a sticky situation for Egypt. The U.S. threatened to withhold $1.3 billion in aid – funding Egypt gets from signing a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. But Voice of America points out the country has risked foreign aid in favor of national dignity in the past.
“The ruling military council last year rejecting a $3.2 billion line of credit from the International Monetary Fund … by January with the government floundering in efforts to provide basic services and unemployment soaring, leaders reversed course and the IMF loan came back in play.”
And while officials might be re-thinking their position toward foreign NGOs, some are still questioning the young government’s intentions. Here is CNN.
“A lot of people here believe that this is a clear indication that the supreme counsel of the armed forces are not going to allow a true democratic civil society to flourish here in Egypt.”
The U.S. has not retracted it’s threat to withhold Egypt’s aid. According to the New York Times, Washington will continue to pressure Egypt to drop the NGO trial all together.

Corporations are regularly, often daily, approached by NGOs looking to partner on projects or get donations through corporate social responsibility programs.
So what makes an organization stand out? Jackie Montesinos Suarez, head of corporate social responsibility for SAP shares her advice.
“I always tell nonprofits that want to build a long-term partnership with us that sometimes we’ve got to focus on the ‘quick’ wins — so let’s do a service activity together, let’s engage our employees, let’s do a team build with a big group of our workforce and see how that goes and build from that,” she said.
