ANCHOR: Robot designers gathered at Robo_Japan 2008 in Yokohama, Japan to showcase their latest developments. NTD's Yukichi Negishi brings us there. STORY: Within the last decade, cell phones and computers have become a part of modern life. In the near future, we might see robots not only in assembly lines but just as much a part of our daily life as cell phones, cars, and computers. Tomotaka Takahashi, award winning robot creator, hopes to see robots in our life not just for convenience but also as our friends. [Tomotaka Takahashi, Robot Creator]: Robots are going to be in your home and your family member pretty soon. We tend to think about the practicality or usage robots, but we never think that way (about) your family or your boyfriend or girlfriend. Please treat them as your friend. Current robot designs mostly resemble male qualities like stiff movement and dont have many feminine qualities. Creating feminine robots is one of next steps to making robots a part of our daily life. [Tomotaka Takahashi, Robot Creator]: I think first of all there is no female type robot because there are technical problems. The first one is its harder to put all the parts inside the body. I [have to] use smaller parts and also design. Second one is that most of researcher in the robotics field is male, so we dont know how to realize female type robots. You know, it has nothing to do with wear skirts or having longer hair. Tomotakas mini climbing robot helped the electronics company, Panasonic, set the Guinness World record for the longest lasting battery. This robot climbed a 530-meter rope up the Grand Canyon in 6 hours and 46 minutes on two Panasonic Evolta AA batteries. Im Yukichi Negishi, NTD, Yokohama, Japan.

WONG: Better quality meat, fish and vegetables could very well put London ahead of any Indian city when it comes to high end Indian food. World renowned London-based Michelin star Indian chef, Atul Kochhar said Indian needed to reform and reorganise its farming industry, so consumers and caterers had reliable access to fresh produce. STORY: Watch out - be warned! Chefs in India could lose their cutting edge in preparing top quality Indian food to chefs in London. Atul Kochhar is one of the few Michelin star Indian chefs. He warns that if India's farming industry is not reorganised - London will become the center of Indian cuisine in terms of quality. [Atul Kochhar, Owner, Benares Restaurant]: "It's not because of lack of good skill, or lack of good spices. It's purely because of lack of excellent ingredients. India doesn't have excellent ingredients in terms of fish, meat or vegetables." Kochhar is the head chef and owner of Benares - a high-end Indian restaurant in the exclusive Mayfair area of central London. Back in 2001 Kochhar became the first Indian chef to be awarded the highly coveted Michelin star. Kochhar is looking to return to India and open up restaurants. His biggest worry however is getting a regular supply fresh food. [Atul Kochhar, Owner, Benares Restaurant]: "How will get the best produce India has to the restaurants and to the tables of my guests. The lamb farming has to be niche. The goat farming has to be niche. The vegetable farming has to be amazingly good. All those things are there, but there is no organized effort." London is home to five Michelin star Indian chefs, New York has one. And there is no reason why more Indian chefs or restaurants in this city will be awarded Michelin stars in the near future given that the reputation of high end Indian food is growing. [Atul Kochhar, Owner, Benares Restaurant]: "There are more people traveling to India right now. there are more people conducing business with indians. they are trying to understand the culture and cuisine better now. hence the recognition." Kochhar says the corner curry house which churns unique English scorchers such as 'chicken tikka masala', or 'balti chicken' - are on the decline. [Atul Kochhar, Owner, Benares Restaurant]: "It was never an authentic cuisine. I call that British Indian food - because that's how brutish people liked it. That's why they were cooking it and thats why it went on for so long." The curry house will always be part of the British landscape. But with changing tastes - its high end and expensive Indian food that is on the rise.

ZHANG: And also in Australia... scientists have discovered hundreds of new coral and marine species on the Great Barrier and Ningaloo Reefs. They say the discovery will help scientists understand more about global warming and over-fishing. STORY: Three expeditions to the reefs over four years to collect the first inventory of soft corals, found 300 soft corals of which 130 are new species. Dozens of new marine species were found, including shrimp-like animals with claws longer than their bodies. They also found less-commonly known animals like a tongue-eating isopod parasite... which eats a fish's tongue and then lives in its mouth. Australian Institute of Marine Science research scientist Julian Caley, says researchers never expected to find so many new species. It'll take years just to name them. [Julian Caley, Research Scientist]: "These new species, some are new species which people were, have never seen before because they're cryptic, they live in environments that people don't tend to look at." The marine inventory will allow better understanding of reef biodiversity and climate change. Corals face threats ranging from ocean acidification, pollution, and warming, to over-fishing and starfish outbreaks. The Australian expeditions are part of the global Census of Marine Life, which will release its first global census in the year 2010.

CHAN: And we begin today's broadcast with increasing political tension in Thailand. In Bangkok today protesters clashed with police as they tried to get to Government House. Here's the latest. STORY: The People's Alliance for Democracy or PAD, is a party of businessmen, academics and royalists called for hundreds of thousands to join their "D-Day" rally today. But they were met by thousands of police, backed with water cannons and tear gas were out to stop them. Authorities pushed and shoved demonstrators as they marched towards Government House. PAD's aim is to force the five-month old government from power. Police expected only 14,000 demonstrators to turn up. They say they are prepared to use force if necessary. Fears of clashes last month stoked rumors of another military coup. But the Chief of Police says "PAD" leaders should abandon their aim to lay siege to Government House. Police were brought in from all over the country. At least eight barricades of crash barriers and prison trucks are set up around the government compound.

CHEN: Tensions continue in the Thai capital between police and protesters around the government compound. Police are now telling activists that they must leave immediately. Here's more. STORY: This compound is occupied by the People's Alliance for Democracy or PAD, which is a group seeking to oust the government. They've been protesting here for several days. But today police delivered their eviction orders, telling PAD members to leave. Armed with batons and shields they posted the court order on lampposts and iron gates. At least 15 protesters were briefly held but nothing more was done to move out the other 4,000-strong crowd. Witnesses say teargas was fired but police are denying the charge. The PAD is urging its supporters to stay at the compound. [Sondhi Limthongkui, PAD Member]: "Every time we find out about the information, that the police will be here and disperse us, it is genuine information. But for the fact that we are well prepared. And the police have planted their own people in here too. They have their own sources in our mass movement. So once they know that we are ready for them, they normally cancel plan." Nine PAD leaders have been charged with insurrection, a crime that can carry the death penalty. The four-day stand off has rattled investors as Thailand's stock market dropped when the riot police moved in. Analysts say the standoff is likely to drag on as long as the government avoids a violent confrontation.

WONG: It looks like the Thai government is in for a rough ride. Protesters converge on Bangkok to shut down a state-run TV station and to oust current leaders from office. Let's see what these demonstrations are all about. STORY: On Tuesday, thousands protested outside Bangkok's Government House and stormed the Thai state TV station, NBT. The main force behind the demonstrations is the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), who is accusing Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej of being a proxy for Thailand's ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was toppled in a bloodless coup about two years ago. [Kosit Sanguansak, Protester]: "This government has no right to govern the country. Everyone here has a same thought as me, including the PAD, and that's why we have come out today." A group of activists were able to push through police lines surrounding NBT's main headquarters, but the station is still broadcasting its signal using mobile units. [Sompong Kanokpan, Protester]: "I have come here to oust the government and also to shut down this TV station. This TV station has reported information that is not true." One protester said that NBT TV did not have the people's best interests in mind. [Booppa Tammarak, Protester]: "This TV station is not a real voice of the people; rather, it is the voice of the government." With the second anniversary of the September 19, 2006, coup against then Prime Minister Thaksin only three weeks away, the army said that it had no intentions of intervening to restore order.

WONG: And in Thailand riot police fired several rounds of tear gas at protesters today. They were trying to disperse a crowd of campaigners who are escalating their bid to unseat the government. The country's deputy prime minister has subsequently stepped down... taking responsibility for the clashes. STORY: The demonstrators were seated outside parliament since late yesterday. They were there to stop the country's prime minister from delivering his first ever policy speech. When police moved in against the protesters this morning they retaliated with firecrackers. Some protesters were badly hurt in the clash and two men lost part of their leg from exploding tear gas canisters. The 5,000 protesters then regrouped in front of parliament. Most are members of the People's Alliance for Democracy, a group of businessmen, academics and activists who say they are acting to defend the monarchy. This group has occupied government house since late August forcing the prime minister to run the country from the Bangkok airport. The prime minister has tried to negotiate with the protesters but no real talks have started yet.
