"I always knew that much of who I was remained undiscovered. From my first semester in sept 2006 of nyu, I knew that things were gonna change for me. When I arrived here, I was surrounded by 19 million people that I didn't know. I was completely alone. The friends that I've made come from across the country, all searching for the same thing; an outlet. A playground with no supervision. " -SPM

BY KELSEY WAANANEN You're watching multisource U.S. video news analysis from Newsy. Is the use of Google in a classroom -- a form of prejudice against the visually handicapped? The National Federation of the Blind has filed a federal complaint against Northwestern University and NYU for using Google Apps for Education. The Federation says requiring students to use the services-- which aren’t fully compatible with text-to-speech technology-- violates The Americans with Disabilities Act. The NFB has made several videos demonstrating how blind users’ needs aren’t being met. For example, this video shows how a blind user would miss an important error message when trying to set up a gmail account. Narrator: "I've tabbed over to the check availability bar and I’ve been told how to activate it..." Computer: "ENTER" Narrator: "I activate the button. Visually, you can see the text has changed on the screen, including an error message that tells me that I can't use an underscore in a user name but none of that text was read to the product." The Chronicle of Higher Education points out this issue has been a hot one lately-- noting a similar legal complaint against Penn State -- which alleges Penn State’s course management software, library catalogue and even the website for the Office of Disability Services -- were inaccessible. "Inaccessible learning materials pervade higher education, and today’s move is the latest in a series of offensives that advocates have mounted against the problem." Though Google is not required by any law to meet the standards, the schools are required to do so. Fox News points out another big company that was forced to make a few changes--- Amazon. “The federal government examined the campus e-reader technology after a blind student sued Arizona State University over use of the Kindle and was joined by the National Federation of the Blind and the American Council of the Blind. Amazon**** Inc. announced changes last year to the Kindle to make it more accessible for blind and vision-impaired users.” Fast Company says -- this is just proof these companies aren’t always ahead of the curve. “The NFB's complaint is a reminder that even companies that we think of as the most forward-thinking appear to be far behind when considering those with disabilities.” But for its part, Google’s blog says the company will be attending the CSUN International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference to work on these issues specifically. “We have more to do. At CSUN 2011, we’re looking forward to more insights about how to make Android, Chrome and Google Apps better enabled for people who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers.
