The team at Newsy**** is watching unfolding perspectives on the swine flu outbreak… *******www.newsy**** In Mexico, by late Sunday U.S. time, more than 80 deaths were likely caused by the virus. In the U.S., 20 cases were confirmed, but no deaths. The strain has also been reported in New Zealand and Canada. On Twitter you can follow CDC emergency from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control for timely updates… A late Sunday update or tweet by the CDC confirmed that the U.S. and Mexico strain of the virus are a genetic match. (CDCemergency) There’s also a great deal of information about the Swine Flu on the website New Scientist…. “This virus is named swine flu because one of its surface proteins is most similar to viruses that usually infect pigs. But we've never seen this particular virus in pigs before. It is spreading in people; that's the problem.” (newscientist) Some news outlets are calling this outbreak a potential pandemic but according to the World Health Organization – three conditions need to be met for a pandemic… “Emergence of a disease new to a population. Agents infect humans, causing serious illness. Agents spread easily and sustainably among humans.” (WHO) US Networks jumped on the story with a variety of reports… on everything from the reaction in Washington, to how to cough properly to prevent the spread of germs. ABC, CNN, MSNBC, CNN The Christian Science Monitor also had this from the CDC … “...it is probable that the number of reported cases will rise in coming days, in part because public health officials will unearth previously undiscovered ones once they they start looking.” (Christian Science Monitor) After two reported cases in Kansas, a Kansas City Star editorial points out that…. “it's important that elected and health officials don't allow panic to take hold… American officials say they are going to make sure the medicines used to treat swine flu can get where they are needed in the country -- and quickly.” (Kansas City Star)
