A massive wave of prescription painkiller addiction, 5.5% of people 12 years and over, and 6.8% in Oklahoma, is meeting with a rapidly reduced supply of these drugs. Conversion to heroin is very likely as it is more prevalent, purer, priced less than ever before. With that is crime, disease, broken families, homelessness, and death. Methadone treatment is the proven safe and effective way to manage this mass of destruction - especially when done in a SAMHSA evidenced-based best clinical practice model.
Oklahoma leads the nation in prescription painkiller addiction and deaths resulting. More and more people from every socioeconomic strata are converting from painkiller to heroin addiction, and the resulting criminal activity is spiking. Traditional treatment is 6-10% effective and begins with costly inpatient detox that usually has a one month waiting list. Ray Caesar, ODMHSAS, speaking at the Absentee Shawnee Counseling Services' Grand Opening, 1301 SE 59th St, OKC, OK 73129, outlines why Methadone Treatment is Oklahoma's best hope for managing this crisis as a safe and effective, cost-effective means of treatment.
