Academy Award winners Susan Sarandon and Alan Arkin join the sensational Penelope Cruz, and action-hero Paul Walker in this Christmas charmer, directed by renowned actor Chazz Palminteri. A patchwork of stories -- among them, a romance between a cop (Walker) and a local beauty (Cruz); a feisty divorcee (Sarandon) journeying towards self-fulfillment as she tends to her dying mother; and the re-forging of a long-broken bond between a lonely old man (Arkin) and Walker's frustrated cop â all culminating on a magical Christmas Eve as they learn the value of family and the true spirit of the holidays.
This is the title track off of my all-acoustic CD. It's hard to tell the entire story behind this song because my shows are usually only 2 hours. . .
This song was written in March of 2004. I was just completing my degree in sign language interpreting and wasn't really intending to enter the workforce. I had this great idea to move closer to Nashville and pursue my music; however, the budget told me this was not a wise idea. I started looking for interpreting positions near Tennessee and was thrilled to see one open in Craig, Arkansas. My resume was in the mail the same day I saw the position posting, but there was one minor problem - Craig, AK is actually Craig, Alaska - Not Arkansas.
As it worked out, I took the job three weeks later. The night I accepted the position and told my family was a rough night. Five months later I would be packing up and driving 2,000 miles away from home.
I couldn't sleep that night and picked up my guitar. This song poured out and is the first time I've ever written a song while playing it like it was a song I've played forever.
That was March. July came and reality hit. My sister was married on July 10th and less than a month after the wedding, I'd be moving. I felt like I spent that entire summer walking around choking on a lump in my throat. I had put so much focus on the wedding and knew once it was over I had to focus on leaving the only home I ever knew.
At the gift opening, my grandma Jean had a gift for me. It was in a suitcase on the floor at her feet and I was bawling before I even sat down beside her on the sofa. She began by saying, "Last night I had a dream that I had to go somewhere and I had to leave in a hurry, but I had no idea where I was going..." She pulled out a sewing kit with the explanation that I could mend whatever broke along the way. She also pulled out Kleenex - which didn't last long because there weren't many dry eyes in the room, change in case I needed to call home, and the last thing she pulled out of the bag was a plaque. Engraved on the plaque was a quote about patchwork quilts and I knew what was in the suitcase.
Grandma Jean was diagnosed with cancer a little over a week after the wedding. My contract was already signed and I knew I had to go. "When I'm Gone" took on an entirely new meaning and I went into Campfield Recording Studio in Wausau, Wisconsin to record it for Grandma before I left.
I mailed the CD to Grandma as I was on my way to Alaska. It was August 9th when I finally arrived. Grandma deteriorated quickly and by Labor Day weekend my family was no longer passing the phone to her when I would call.
I booked a flight home and made it home late on September 8th - just in time to say one last goodbye. She passed away the following afternoon.
The streets of Bethlehem are plastered with posters depicting suicide bombers and members of the armed resistance: the martyrs of the modern era. Charles Annenberg Weingarten and his guides walk the city and discuss how the patchwork of propaganda could be adjusted to reflect a desire for freedom rather than a call to violence.

In the spring of 1933 my great grandmother, Effie Bernice Hunt, began a labor of love at her kitchen table: a 25 week-long handmade quilt making project of 25 appliqué quilt blocks. Each handmade quilt block featured a different flower beloved in the Pacific Northwest and ranged from the camellia, to the gladiolus to bluebells. The patterns were published weekly in the Sunday Oregonian newspaper. A full 60 years later I assembled those fragile polished cotton, handmade quilt blocks into the gorgeous finished â??Modernistic Flower Appliqué Quilt.â? Effie had very thoughtfully tucked the directions in among the completed appliqué quilt blocks for the final quilt assembly or visit www.instant-software-products**** what a beautiful handmade quilt and portrait of the past she bequeathed to me! The family story goes that the heart or Effieâ??s handmade quilt making operation, and she made many appliqué quilts and patchwork quilts, was at the kitchen table in front of her beloved, huge radio set stationed smack in the middle of everything. My particular appliqué quilt was gradually given birth to over a weekly basis beginning in the spring of 1933.

Parents are pulling the trigger on bad education in California. McKinley Elementary in Compton is in the bottom ten percent of schools in the state -- and parents of the school are now demanding a school management shakeup.
The California legislature passed a law in January, nicknamed the Parent Trigger Law, allowing parents to change up the administration at any under-performing school if more than 50 percent of parents sign the petition. 61 percent of McKinley’s parents signed the petition.
That petition mandates the school let a charter school company take the reins, turning it into an independently-operated public school. KNBC says parents feel like they have no other choice. But teachers say not so fast.
“We have one shot at educating our children, and if we don’t do it right the first time, there’s no going back.”
Anchor: “The California Federation of Teachers is opposed to turning over control at McKinley. That could mean the parents would have to sue in order to have a charter school takeover.”
Parents want the school administrators to step aside and let charter school organizer Celerity Educational Group take over. The California Federation of Teachers calls the law a “lynch mob provision.” But the Wall Street Journal sees no problem with the charter takeover.
“Celerity already runs three Los Angeles-area charters that serve students similar to those at McKinley with far greater success... Since Celerity is ready and waiting to take over McKinley, the district has no legitimate reason not to facilitate the switch.”
KOVR reports parents say this effort could help failing schools around the country.
“We're starting here today, but it can go not just Compton. It can go to other cities, other states, this could be something big.”
The Huffington Post says the Compton parents have pulled the trigger not only in California, but nationwide. The writer says America’s patchwork of 14,000 school districts traps low income students in low performing schools -- and that needs to change.
“It's time for state policies to reflect parent demand and educational opportunity--it's time to make educational choice the norm not the exception.”
But critics say charter schools are not the answer. A writer for Smart Money says teachers at charter schools are less likely to be state-certified and more likely to quit after a few years.
“For all the hype about a few standout schools, charter schools in general aren’t producing better results than traditional public schools.”
So should parents rock the schoolhouse? Or is there a better alternative to help failing schools?

How to Market, Brand and Sell YOU!
By Chrissie Lightfoot
UNCOVERING A NEW APPROACH TO LAW WITH A ROAR OF APPROVAL!
An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers
This project is a new endeavour which marks author lawyer Chrissie Lightfoot as very much a legal trend-setter with this novel approach to legal services.
Just before the General Election, there was a flurry of activity about the business of Law and the new technologies we should be using for the second decade of the 21st century. The predominant view remains that within18 months the face of much that we do will be changed forever… that is probably true, but how are we going to approach these dramatic changes?
Chrissie Lightfoot offers us her highly original take with a “Reach Out And Relate” (ROAR) model so despised for its open pushiness by earlier generations who conducted business relationships in such a different way.
The book is also online and, when you read it, the experience is slightly different from what we would call conventional titles. Lightfoot describes it as a real-life story (make that real-time also) and is a ‘sales blueprint’ or ‘life manual’. Yes. Many readers will be aware of such titles and the issue has always been whether they work or not: for some they do, and for others, certainly not. It worked for us.
“The Naked Lawyer” does work as a patchwork of ideas, activities and the ‘how to approach’ which many more ‘conservative’ lawyers would find outlandish. Primarily, it’s a sales book for lawyers in 230 pages with12 individual chapters or ‘volumes’ covering a journey through 11 activities after the initial introduction. Each volume has a ROAR summation or conclusion and plentiful referencing throughout to give the book the feel of a lawyers’ training manual… but it is more than that!
Years ago, there was a policy that children (and probably many adults, or “employees” as we can call them) “should be seen and not heard” so the concept of reaching out and relating was a bit difficult to pursue as one had to be quiet all the time. Those days have gone away with the general subservient society, so the ROAR model and how to go to market in 2011 replace conventional sales and marketing with IT and rather a lot of modern vocabulary which is both exhilarating and irritating depending on the age of the reader.
The worth of the book is its sheer originality because Chrissie Lightfoot excels in those areas the current generation of post-geek social networkers find themselves occupying under the Damocles sword of political correctness, ‘equality’, and all things hip and “groovy”…in the original 1930s sense of being in the groove of modernity. And it succeeds! Forget entrepreneurs like Lord Sugar and the awful ‘You’re fired’ concept, volume10 gives you continual stimulation which is what successful entrepreneurs are all about. The problem with the lawyers is that the answer to anything they ever wanted to do was invariably ‘no’. With Chrissie, the invariable answer is ‘yes’ linked with ‘we can’ (Obama) and the final ‘yes, yes, yes’ which means always be positive, amongst other things.
Richard Susskind gets a few mentions for ‘The End of Lawyers’ which started a trend when the real title for today should be ‘The Beginning of New Lawyers’ as both the Bar and the high street solicitor enter the entities era and life will never be the same again… and with Chrissie it never will be, so thank you for such a refreshing sparkle of computer driven intellect as we face the cuts, the competition, and the change to the way we do our legal business this decade with the help of ‘The Naked Lawyer’- so it is clearly a roar of approval.
