*******www2.dupont****/ISCEON/en_US/index.html?src=metacafe_dupont_refrig_01 R-22 is an ozone depleting hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant regulated under the Montreal Protocol and the U.S. Clean Air Act because of its ozone depleting properties. R-22 is on a phase-out schedule to eliminate its usage by the year 2020. Equipment owners who currently use R-22 with HVACR equipment will need to use refrigerant alternatives as the demand for R-22 becomes greater than the supply. The DuPont™ ISCEON® line of refrigerants covers all applications where R-22 has been in place, at a range of temperatures from refrigeration to air conditioning. Barbara Minor, Engineering Fellow DuPont Refrigerants: R-22 is now a regulated chemical, and the reason it’s regulated is because it does have ozone depletion. And so, because of that, it’s regulated under an international agreement, which is called the Montreal Protocol. And, it’s also regulated under the U.S. Clean Air Act. And, because of this, there is a phase-down schedule for R-22, to eventually eliminate its use. Because it does have ozone depletion potential. Nick Strickland, Market Development Manager DuPont Refrigerants: And, as R-22 transitions away because of the implementation of the U.S. Clean Air Act, that’s going to create some disruptions, and some possible … supply-demand imbalances in the future. And it’s important to be looking at a smooth transition away from R-22. And, we have some products that allow a smooth transition, if you look at some of our ISCEON products. Barbara Minor: Because we realize, it’s really not an option, especially if people have a lot of pieces of equipment. There’s a significant amount of capital investment in that equipment. And it’s not really an option for the end users to have to replace that equipment. And so, our area of focus in our research has been to try and come up with a refrigerant alternative to R-22 … that doesn’t have any ozone depletion potential, which is the reason 22’s being phased out... that can be used in the existing equipment, with really minimal modifications, minimal headaches for the contractor, to do the replacement. And that really is the … the essence of the … ISCEON product line... to have a … a series of refrigerants that can cover all applications where R-22 is used today, from refrigeration and air conditioning, at all different, temperatures, from low temp to medi... temp to high temp, that there would be a product available that you could put into an existing R-22 system and have a smooth transition, and not need to worry about, the situation with R-22. Barbara Minor: At the same time, all refrigeration and air conditioning systems have a compressor, which is essentially the heart of the system. That compressor is lubricated. And, so there’s a lubricant that’s also circulating in the system as well, and the standard lubricant that’s been used in R-22 systems is mineral oil, which is inexpensive, a wonderful lubricant. And, the contractors want to continue using it. So the other challenge in developing this refrigerant was to have it be compatible with the mineral oil... miscible enough that the compressor would continue to work, that there wouldn’t be any system issues, as opposed to some other alternatives that have been developed. They are not compatible with mineral oil. Well, what does that mean? That means, either you have to remove all the oil from the system and put in a different oil, which can tend to be more expensive and more difficult to handle... or sometimes, you may be able to use mixtures of mineral oil and other lubricants. But, it … it really becomes a … a challenge and an issue for the contractors. So, when we listened to what the needs of the industry were, those were our two focuses. Have … have the cooling performance, the pressures, temperatures, enthalpies, as close as we could get to R-22, but also have compatibility with the existing oil, so that an oil change wouldn’t be required.
