You're watching multisource science and health news from Newsy It sounds like something out of Hollywood -- the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring... mice. In a recently published study, scientists say they reversed the effects of aging in lab mice -- but don’t throw out that Rogaine just yet. ABC News has the story. ALFONSI: “The key is something called a telomere -- we all have them; they’re the tips or caps of your chromosomes. ... As you grow older, the telomeres become damaged and frayed, and as they stop working we start aging. ... Scientists took mice who were prematurely aged, added an enzyme, and essentially turned their telomeres back on. You can see it -- before the enzyme, after.” Within a month of applying the enzyme, researchers found the aged mice were back to the physiological state of their younger counterparts -- their fur went from gray to black, their skin condition improved, their fertility was restored, and, perhaps most interestingly, their brains grew back to normal size. (Video: CTV) An anchor on CNN could barely wait to ask the study’s head researcher if he’d found the Fountain of Youth -- but he says it’s more like getting rid of the symptoms of growing old. Though the mice in the study reversed the physiological effects of age, they didn’t live any longer than usual. DePINHO: "What we've learned is there is a point of return for even aged tissues -- that tissues retain the remarkable capacity to rejuvenate if you remove the underlying cause of the aging, which in this case was excessive DNA damage in the mice -- and DNA damage is a major cause of aging.” And a writer for the Guardian explains, scientists anticipate a major drawback in the treatment. “Mice make telomerase throughout their lives, but the enzyme is switched off in adult humans, an evolutionary compromise that stops cells growing out of control and turning into cancer. Raising levels of telomerase in people might slow the ageing process, but it makes the risk of cancer soar.” The Harvard Gazette reports scientists found no increased incidence of cancer in the study's mice, but admit the topic requires further investigation. (Video: CTV) Finally, venturing off the scientific aspects of the story, a columnist for the National Post says humans have been doing things they know causes cancer for years, so why would it stop them now? “Does anyone doubt that if those folks at Harvard figure out a way to make skin cream with new telomere-advancing properties, people will be smearing it all over their faces? Maybe they could hand out a pack of smokes and a free trial at the tanning salon with each king-size container. That should have the customers lined up outside the door.” You can read the study for yourself -- check out the links in our transcript section. Use this optical test to see how fast your eyes can adjust to changing colors. Right now, there are two tests. Each test was carefully selected, ie what colors, radius of the circle, etc. It's pretty interesting. Some people will notice a small period where there eyes don't adjust immediately. Some won't. See where you stand. Your eyes are extremely complex organs! Do some research on them and you'll find a lot of interesting facts. © 2008 – 2009 LSKENGR407

MAKE SURE YOU VIEW THE FIRST VIDEO! This one is a little bit different. See if you are able to focus on the dot with a sharp change in background. Keep your eyes on the dot! Don't look elsewhere even when the background changes. Also determine how long it takes for you to see the actual background of the color once it changes (keep focused on the dot!). Go back and view it again to see how you did and to see what the color was in case you missed it. The better your eyes, and health, the less of an effect you'll see. Try it every few days to see if you're getting better. Once your brain remembers the combination in both videos, you may no longer see an effect!

This funky old science film explores the process of alcohol moving through the human body. Using animation, and that vintage dry scientist narrator that old educational videos are famous for, the film not only demonstrates alcohols path through the anatomy of a human, but much more. The effects of alcohol and substance abuse are explores in detail. Alcoholism symptoms, as well as alcohol liver damage symptoms, get thoroughly discussed. The 1940's human anatomy drawings are a fun way to learn about substance abuse disorder. Also touched upon are the methods of alcohol manufacturing, including how to make whiskey and other yeast and alcohol fermentation processes. Overall, the film is a fine mix of medicine, booze, and vintage science.

Physical Aspects of Puberty, a sex-education film, details the different developing sex characteristics and emotional upheavals of the “in-between period of adolescence.” Using animated diagrams as well as live action, the film shows Johnny and Janey as they suffer through body hair growth, uneven physical development, changes in appetite and brain cells, blemishes, and a fluctuating endocrine system. It even discusses the emotional effects of adolescence, including mood swings, and a tendency to be overly emotional.

This book provides the reader with not only such information as what fossils are and where and how they are found, but also a closer examination of a variety of fossil specimens, millions of years old, that are still able to declare, "We never underwent evolution; we were created." The fossils discussed and illustrated in this book are just a few examples of the hundreds of millions of specimens that prove the fact of Creation. And even these few are enough to prove that the theory of evolution is a major hoax and deception in the history of science.
