BY JENNIFER MECKLES You're watching multisource U S news analysis from Newsy If you knew someone on the transplant list needed a new heart, would you support their fight for life? Most would say yes. But what if that person was a convicted child rapist, serving time in prison -- and relied on your tax dollars for the surgery -- Still on board? Albany’s WXXA has the story behind this very real situation right now in New York: “We’ve learned that a convicted rapist doing time in state prison down in Green County is being evaluated for a heart transplant -- A heart transplant that you and I would have to pay for. Kenneth Pike was flown from the Coxsackie Correctional Facility to a Rochester hospital where he’s now listed in guarded condition.” This story got strong reaction from local viewers... the taxpayers who would be expected to foot the estimated $800,000 hospital bill. Rochester, New York’s WHAM reports -- all the attention led to an unexpected decision from the prisoner, himself: “We have learned that Kenneth Pike may have had a change of heart. His sister, Sharon Cardinal tells 13 WHAM News, Pike doesn’t want the transplant. Cardinal told us quote -- ‘He told his kids he didn’t want it because he’s tired of living his life that way.’ Cardinal says Pike will return to prison in Green County this week, against the wishes of his children.” Pike’s story sparked discussion about the rights of the convicted nationwide. Fox News asks -- should prisoners be entitled to organ transplants? ANCHOR: “Isn’t this guy actually gaining a right he probably never had before, and thereby profiting from his heinous crime?” CHIP MERLIN: “There is no right for a law abiding citizen to have this type of treatment afforded to them. And there has been some concerns expressed regarding these donor cards that a lot of us have and we sign up for all the time -- that if we start allow convicted felons to get organs, a lot of people are going to stop signing up for this program.” A writer for Business First of Buffalo says he does NOT like the idea of funding life extensions for criminals, but after further consideration -- he raises these questions: “Who are we to play God? If we begin to deny medical treatment to prisoners for ‘major surgeries’ where does it stop? Soon some politician realizes we can slash the budget by cutting non-essential doctor’s visits, then we eliminate dental care. Before you know it, the prison system backslides closer to something we are used to reading about in a war-torn third-world dictatorships half a world away.” The story lit a fire under the state senator Michael Nozzolio, who represents that New York region. He is now calling for a special hearing to investigate organ transplants for prison inmates. The Auburn Citizen reports why: "A key concern mentioned in a press release issued by Nozzolio's office Monday is that inmates could potentially jump ahead of law-abiding citizens on the organ donor lists." The New York Post reports Pike is eligible for parole in 2013 - if he lives until then. Family members told the Associated Press Pike has already undergone triple bypass surgery, will likely die without the transplant. BY LINDSEY WOLF ANCHOR JENNIFER MECKLES You're watching multisource politics news analysis from Newsy. Waterboarding: Illegal interrogation method. Or valuable tactic? That’s the debate in the wake of the capture and killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. On Fox News, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King of New York tells Bill O’Reilly, getting the nickname was the direct result of harsh interrogation tactics. “It was through the interrogation of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed through waterboarding. ... So for those of you who say that waterboarding doesn’t work, that say it should be stopped and never used again - we got vital information that led us to bin Laden.” But according to the New York Times, alleged 9/11 plotter Khalid Shaikh Mohammed didn’t give up the top secret information out right. Instead, other prisoners in U.S. custody gave up the courier’s aliases, and CIA officials pieced the rest of the puzzle together. “When the Americans ran the man’s pseudonym past two top-level detainees — the chief planner of the Sept. 11 attacks, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed; and Al Qaeda’s operational chief, Abu Faraj al-Libi — the men claimed never to have heard his name. That raised suspicions among interrogators that the two detainees were lying and that the courier probably was an important figure.” The 9/11 Commission report confirms KSM underwent waterboarding. WTHR in Indianapolis questions - is there is any way to know if the courier’s identity and the interrogation are connected at all? “But was it the harsh interrogation that led to the critical information? The identity and whereabouts of the courier only came to light years later - after the enhanced interrogation had stopped.” And White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says the capture and killing can’t be attributed to just one thing, so there’s no way to directly connect the capture and killing to extreme interrogation. CNN: “It’s simply strange to suggest that a piece of information that may or may not have been gathered eight years ago somehow directly led to a successful mission on Sunday. That’s just not the case.” Business Insider says, you can’t just look at one interrogation success story. You have to look at every GITMO interrogation. “Of course, the defense of waterboarding comes down to cherrypicking the good, easy to see results (capturing top officials) and ignores the unseen results (all the ex-GITMO detainees who come back as more hardened terrorists).” Finally, the Atlantic Wire points out the hurdles both sides of the story will have to overcome. “[W]aterboarding supporters have to deal with the fact that the crucial information leading to bin Laden's location came after the waterboarding stopped. Anti-Guantanamo activists have to deal with the fact that such quality information came from illegal detention centers, including Guantanamo.” Follow Newsy_Videos on Twitter Get more multisource video news analysis from Newsy Transcript by Newsy

BY KIM ST. ONGE ANCHOR LAUREN GORES You're watching multisource U.S. news analysis from Newsy. Inmates in Georgia could soon be turning in their jumpsuits for firefighter uniforms. MSNBC’s Ed Schultz gives you the background. “Authorities in Camden County Georgia say they can save more than $500,000 a year by using prison inmates to fight fires. The plan would use convicted criminals from another county where a similar program has been up and running for two years now.” But, some would rather see the new money saving proposal burn. A spokesperson for the National Association of Firefighters told ABC, letting inmates fight fires will only lead to bigger problems. “Now you’re going to be bringing people that have been before judges, convicted of crimes, and all it takes is for someone to say, ‘Oh I’m missing something out of my house and the only other people here were firefighters.’ They’re not going to differentiate between prisoner and firefighter, and the distrust in community, it’s just not a good equation.” Authorities say Inmates convicted of only low level and nonviolent crimes would be eligible for the job.A Camden County Commissioner told The Florida Times Union inmates have a hard-working reputation. “I’ve been told these inmates are very enthusiastic about being a firefighter... It’s an opportunity to break that cycle. This is not like a chain gang. Life at a fire station could be a whole lot more pleasant than life in jail.” The inmates would be supervised by a certified firefighter and monitored by a surveillance system. A writer for Gawker points out the ideahas spread to other states. “In California, another broke state with a thriving prison-industrial complex, ‘there are more than 4,000 firefighting inmates stationed at 45 camps throughout the state.’ Although they mostly help with wildfires and huge emergency things like that — not your daily cat-in-the-tree stuff, except to sell drugs to the cats.” On top of committing only low level crimes, inmates would need to be in good standing pass an interview, and would not be allowedoutside visitors or cell phones. The pay? It’s strictly volunteer, but inmates could apply for a firefighting job five years after their conviction date instead of waiting 10. Transcript by Newsy
