Internet Explorer 8 Life Academy Awards celebrates the creativity of the generation who has grown up with internet and are now coming of age. Using new media, entrants submitted a two minute video to Internet Explorer 8 Life Academy, explaining their socially responsible idea and how they propose to take it forward. From the hundreds of entrants, the 12 chosen finalists went on to battle it out in front of a high profile judging panel comprising of Professor Robert Winston, entrepreneur and lastminute**** co-founder Brent Hoberman and Countdown mathematician Rachel Riley. I think this is the first ever Professor Layton crossover paring that was outside the game. I chose Belle because she reminds me of Claire in some ways. Plus doesn’t Adam look like a long haired Layton…sort of? Story in case it’s a little confusing: Professor Hershel Layton; after dealing with a heartfelt blow by the lost of his beloved Claire decides to take a much needed holiday with his young apprentice Luke Triton. During the drive to the small country villa, the last moments he spent with her play though his head, but the bittersweet memory ends once they arrived. While walking to the hotel Layton notices a young women walking with her nose in the book. As she passes him, he shock at how much she look like Claire, curiosity compels him to run after her. However he stumbles upon an argument between her and a rugged man know to her as Gaston. After Gaston throws Belle book in the mud and calls her worthless Luke immediately shouts at him to leave her alone. Not wanting to make a scene Gaston leaves Belle to clean up her book. Being the young gentleman Luke asks if she was alright. Belle apologizes for bothering them with her problem but the Professor eases her mind with his gentleman wisdom. Still feeling guilty she invites them to her farm as payment. Her father ecstatic at the fact a celebrity was staying with them open his doors to them. Belle tells ‘Mr. Layton’ that he and Luke can stay for as long as they needed, only after Layton tells her she can drop the formalities being friends and all. “Very well…Hershel…” she restates before drinking her tea, at that moment Layton couldn’t help but compare her to Claire, but only for a second. Three weeks have passed and the three become good friends. One night Belle confides in Luke that she might have a crush on Layton, but feels he couldn’t feel the same way to an odd farmer like her. Luke encourages her that he believes his professor feels the same way and that makes her smile. But the moment doesn’t last when someone breaks into her home. Thinking fast Luke rushes upstairs and gets the professor. Hearing Belle’s in trouble Layton rushes to the living room to find it torn apart by Gaston. He keeps lunging for Belle, trying to get to her; the look on her face clearly tells him this wasn’t the first time. He orders Gaston to leave her alone but the drunken fool doesn’t listen and tries to attack him. Being the gentleman he is instead of fisticuffs he lures Gaston to the door and lets him throw himself out into the snow. After securing locking the door he turns to Belle to see her in tears on the floor. He apologizes to her for discovering Gaston was a former boyfriend who was harassing her since they broke up. She doesn’t forgive him for she believes it’s her fault for putting him and Luke in that much trouble. She tells him to forget about her and to leave. Layton couldn’t believe it; he was going to lose Belle just like he lost Claire. Her goodbye rang the same tone as Belles, he couldn’t let it happen. “You can’t go!” he shouts, loosing his gentleman composure. Belle gasps in sheer shock, “I don’t want to say goodbye. Please Belle, I…I Love You!” Both Luke and Belle are surprised by Layton reaction, one more than the other. Blinded by tears of joy Belle grasps Layton chest and hold him close, whispering, “I love you Hershel…” Luke stares in awe as she and Layton share a teary passionate kiss in the wreak room. Time passed and it was time for Luke and Layton to return to London. However this cut into their holiday for they are being called back on an urgent matter. Since Belle knew Hershel couldn’t stay with her she asks if she could come with them. After a moment he replies, “What lies ahead could be dangerous…”he pauses Belle looking skeptical at him, “That while you’ll have to be extra careful, alright?” She smiles and the three rides back to London together. Never forgetting how two broken hearts found their way into each others lives. BY MALLORY PERRYMAN You're watching multisource politics news analysis from Newsy After a University of Wisconsin professor wrote a blog post criticizing the state GOP- the party wants access to thousands of the teacher’s emails. It all started when acclaimed history professor William Cronon penned a blog about the American Legislative Exchange Council- a group that creates model bills for conservative lawmakers. The blog post got half a million hits. And Cronon got hit with this- an open records request from a state Republican Party official for any emails on Cronon’s university account that mention any one of twenty key words- all related to the GOP. Under the state’s open records law, the GOP doesn’t have to say why it’s requesting the documents. But a reporter for The Nation says, the reason is pretty obvious. “Of course this is a fishing expedition in search of something embarrassing....there’s a big difference between an individual using Freedom of Information legislation to expose government misconduct, and the party in power using it to harass and intimidate a critic of the government.” Cronon says the request is an assault on his academic freedom. But Slate’s Jack Shafer argues- there’s no such thing as a bad records request. “I know, there's a huge element of the political stunt to the filing. But ...denouncing the request as an assault on academic freedom...is...a stretch. If university emails are under the purview of records requests, every citizen...has every right to file a request.” Paul Krugman of The New York Times counters, sure Republicans can legally make the request... “But there’s a clear chilling effect when scholars know that they may face witch hunts whenever they say things the G.O.P. doesn’t like... researchers won’t just become reluctant to act as concerned citizens...they’ll be deterred from even doing research on topics that might get them in trouble.” The New Yorker notes- Republicans are probably looking for evidence that Cronon used his work email for political purposes, which is against university policy. To read more about the Cronon controversy, check out these articles: The New Yorker: Wisconsin: The Cronan Affair “Cronon is not only a political moderate, he’s a passionate Wisconsin patriot. He moved to Madison as a child, did his B.A. at the University, and learned his environmentalism as an explorer of the Wisconsin landscape and a reader of a local hero, the naturalist Aldo Leopold. In 1992, at a time when academic stars had begun to flee strapped public universities for richer private ones, Cronon, by then a professor at Yale, left to go back to Madison.” Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel: The professor’s political entomology runs into the left’s own rules “I find it fascinating that the use of public transparency laws -- the fully lawful use, everyone concedes -- is nonetheless seen as hostile by the left. It gives away something of the game: The use of such transparency laws is, then, harassment? They were meant to harass, then, only politically disfavored targets, such as conservative professors? They're a weapon for one team only?” Big Think: Yes, Prof. Cronon, Let’s Talk about ALEC “ALEC is set up to exploit a widespread weakness in the structure of state governments. Many state legislators work part time, and many have little legislative staff support. Writing bills is hard work and it's expensive to hire people who are qualified to do it. When the taxpayers won't hire legislative staff to work for them, ALEC fills the void by writing model legislation, based on the input of corporate sponsors.” Scholar As Citizen: Abusing Open Records to Attack Academic Freedom “One obvious conclusion I draw is that my study guide about the role of ALEC in Wisconsin politics must come pretty close to hitting a bull’s-eye. Why else would the Republican Party of Wisconsin feel the need to single out a lone university professor for such uncomfortable attention?” Follow Newsy_Videos on Twitter Get more multisource video news analysis from Newsy Transcript by Newsy
