“Good evening, my name is Larry King and this is the premiere edition of Larry King Live. Every night at this time, we’ll be here for one hour, we’re going to meet fascinating people from all walks of life.”
Larry King will hang up his suspenders for the last time Thursday night after 25 years on the air - in what’s being called a star-studded farewell tribute.
But CNN promises this is not the last you will see of King - he’s coming back on a more part-time basis. He has agreed not to go to the competition if he can still do four specials a year on CNN. So that’s just what he’s going to do.
Thursday’s final episode will include many celebrities and guests he has interviewed on his show. KFMB has some of the scarce details about tonight’s good-bye.
“CNN is keeping quiet about the guest list for tonight’s show, promising it to be star-studded. Barbra Streisand and Katie Couric are just a few of the people rumored to be making an appearance.”
The Boston Globe says Larry King has an interview style few in television can claim. Although famous for asking easy questions, he also got his guests to talk.
“That’s an art, and an increasingly devalued art as bite-sized, prefabricated exchanges have taken over TV.”
After such a long-running career, NPR questions if King will be missed. Contrary to popular opinion, former Times television critic Howard Rosenberg doesn’t think so.
“I think it’s time to move on. It remains to be seen whether CNN will miss him. I think they were ready for him to leave, you know, and I think - his successor will be Piers Morgan - I think any similarity between Piers Morgan and Larry King will be purely coincidental. I don’t think this guy will wear suspenders. No, I don’t think he’ll be missed even though he was extremely popular with the entertainment community out here.”
In what many in the media is calling the end of an Era, Larry King will give up his throne to Piers Morgan in January.
“For now, for here, it’s time to hang up the nightly suspenders. And who knows what the future’s going to bring.”
