Stirling's "Mails" were graceful 7' bogie 4-4-0 express locomotives built by the South Eastern Railway at Ashford, Kent to compete with the locomotives of their bitter rival, the London Chatham & Dover Railway who were setting the pace on the lucrative Continental and Kent Coast Traffic. In all, some 88 of these 'F Class' locomotives were built and proved a great success. In 1903, with the SER and LC&DR now merged to form the South Eastern and Chatham Railway and Wainwright in charge, the railway set out to rebuild the F Class and thereby prolong their useful life, with 76 being converted to 'F1 Class' between 1903 and 1919. Wainwright did such a good job that some would see service, with extended smokeboxes added by Maunsell between 1914 and 1920, in the into early BR day, the last being withdrawn in 1949. Here we see two views of F1 No.1060, built in 1891 and rebuilt in 1905, on a staged run in the 1930s. This loco was one of nine lent to the London Midland & Scottish Railway during WWII (from 1941 until 1944). After being returned to the Southern she saw a couple more years of service, being withdrawn in 1946.

*******www.thriveonsuccess****.au The famous ZigZag Railway at Lithgow in NSW is a great way to experience the bygone era of the steam train. Travel down the steep mountain side through tunnels and over viaducts through picturesque scenery on board the restored 18 1/4 steam engine. An experience the children loved.
