To celebrate the release of Tubular Bells and Mike Oldfield: The Collection, there was an international event on Saturday 6th June, which saw eight countries around the Globe taking part on BELL DAY. In the UK, the British Music Experience at the 02 hosted a spectacular event - The Handbell Ringers of Great Britain Vs The Orb. The 29-piece handbell ensemble played a version of Tubular Bells while The Orb DJ'ed a Orbular Bells set. People came from all over the country to watch and then join in on amassed handbells. Elsewhere bells rang in Sydney, Australia (at the Opera House – the iconic multi-venue performing arts centre), in Berlin, Germany (at the Berlin Victory Column / Siegessäule - the location were Mike Oldfield performed the legendary Millennium Bell concert on New Years Eve Y2K), in Belgium, Brussels (at the Atomium monument - built of spheres which are connected by tubes), in Japan, Yokohama (at the Hokutenin Temple, one of the traditional Japanese Temples), Buenos Aires, Argentina (at the Floralis Generica sculpture at ‘Plaza de las Naciones’ – the new monument and symbol of Buenos Aires), in Beijing, China & the Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mike Oldfield was in great praise of the day, and rang his own bell from his boat, moored off America. The release of Tubular Bells - available in seven physical and digital formats out now - marks the first catalogue releases from the legendary artist since Mercury acquired his catalogue in 2007, and marks the start of a comprehensive reissue campaign.

Rhode Island's The Low Anthem have been riding a wave of critical acclaim of late. The band recently reissued their 2009 LP Oh My God, Charlie Darwin LP on Nonesuch and were in New York after playing at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. We had originally planned to shoot a song backstage at the Bowery Ballroom (to circumvent the venue's $500 fee for filming bands during soundcheck) but time got away from us. We reconvened the following day between Ben's recording sessions in an Upper East Side courtyard. Jeff folded out his WWI portable pump organ and with the minimum of accompanying instrumentation the band ran through a majestic acoustic version of To The Ghosts Who Write History Books. Shot and edited by Stuart Rogers with sound recorded by Douglas Q. Smith and mixed by Gylfi Blöndal.

To purchase: *******www.mosaicrecords****/prodinfo.asp?number=246-MD-CD The mid fifties was a fertile time for jazz; fresh, original ensembles were taking shape all over the country. The Modern Jazz Quartet, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, The Jazz Messengers and the Ahmad Jamal Trio immediately come to mind. Among musicians, each group had its imitators and its creative disciples who took its innovations one step further. But no group in this era was as pervasive in the 1957 incarnation of Jamal’s trio with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernel Fournier. Like the Nat King Cole Trio of the previous decade, its influence penetrated so many different aspects of music. Jamal is first and foremost a pianist with a natural gift for the instrument. His technique, dynamics and control are something to behold, but the mind that manipulates what comes out of the piano is extraordinary. Like only the greatest of improvising artists, Jamal is a master architect, realizing what his mind conceives with seeming ease. He certainly exercised a profound influence on pianists and his trio set a new standard for what the piano trio in jazz would aim for and achieve. His knack for finding obscure but viable material which lent itself to a jazz treatment was equal to that of Sonny Rollins and Jimmy Rowles. But when Ahmad put an overlooked tune into circulation, it often stayed in the jazz repertoire forever thereafter. And with songs like “Poinciana” and “Billy Boy,” it was Jamal’s unique and imaginative re-arrangement of the tune which would become the standard form with which to play the piece. Much like Miles Davis (who incidentally was greatly influenced by him), his influence is felt in music that attempts to replicate his and in great music that sounds nothing like his. But unlike musicians of similar or even lesser impact, the music of the 1957-62 Ahmad Jamal Trio has been mysteriously and distressingly hard to come by, even in the “reissue everything” era of the Compact Disc.

"The Book of Love" (also titled "(Who Wrote) The Book of Love") is a rock and roll song, originally by The Monotones. It was written by three members of the group, Warren Davis, George Malone and Charles Patrick, and it peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lead singer Charles Patrick heard a Pepsodent toothpaste commercial with the line "wonder where the yellow went". From there he got the idea for the line, "I wonder, wonder, wonder who, who wrote the book of love", working it up into a song with Davis and Malone. The "boom" part of the song was a result of a kid kicking a ball against the garage while they were rehearsing, it sounded good, so they added it to the song. In September 1957, the Monotones recorded "The Book Of Love", which was released on the Mascot label in December that year. The small record company could not cope with its popularity, and it was reissued on Chess Records' subsidiary Argo label in February 1958. It attained a Billboard ranking of #5 for pop songs and #3 for R&B in 1958. It also reached #5 in Australia. In the UK, the hit version was a cover by The Mudlarks. In 1985, the song was covered on The Four Seasons (band) album Streetfighter. In 1988, this tune became the new theme song for The Newlywed Game, when Paul Rodriguez replaced Bob Eubanks as host for one year. In 1990, Ben E. King and Bo Diddley featuring Doug Lazy recorded a revamped rap version of "Book of Love" for the soundtrack of the film, Book of Love.
