Transcript by Newsy**** BY ADNAN S. KHAN You're watching multisource world news analysis from Newsy The numbers are rolling in- and it looks like the mostly-Christian population of Southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly to split from Sudan’s Muslim north. Even with numerous reported conflicts and killings, ITN reports the chairman of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission says it was one of the most successful voting processes in the nation’s history. MOHAMED IBRAHIM KHALIL: “I’ve watched a number of elections in this country. I think this has been the most peaceful, the most orderly and the quietest. ... I think it is really a great achievement.” A 60 percent minimum turnout was required for the vote to be considered legitimate. The turnout was around 96 percent with Sudanese, but the BBC reports there was still some violence against southerners. “The process was marred, however, by a deadly attack on a convoy of south Sudanese civilians earlier this week. The group were returning home to vote when they were ambushed near the north-south border in the disputed oil-rich region of Abyei.” If everything stays on track, the referendum will split the nation in two, with South Sudan possibly becoming the world’s newest nation as early as July. HLN reports - reality is setting in. “I think what we’re seeing is a really high number of returnees coming to the south. They have high expectations from an independent Southern Sudan, its what they’re hoping for. However in terms of their immediate reality what they’re seeing is there isn’t enough for them in terms of sanitation, water, medical care…” What about Christians living in the North? Al-Jazeera interviewed a resident of Khartoum who is willing to move to the South after investing 29 years of his life in the North. “I have lived with them since I was young, and I worked as a civil servant but i feel that I have always been discriminated against. I feel its best for me to leave here and move back to the south and start a new life.” The New York Times reports the key issue over the contested region of Abyei has still not been addressed. It’s supposed to have a separate vote on whether to join the North or South. The oil-rich region expects violence following that decision. “This is the beginning of another era of fighting in Sudan. There is no way we can remain in the North while South is going ‘We’re going to declare we’re going to the south.’ And if they attack us let it be.” The final referendum results will be posted on February 14.

Transcript by Newsy BY BRANDON TWICHELL You're watching multisource world news analysis from Newsy The official count is in, and Southern Sudan has voted to secede from the north by a whopping 99 percent. The north has agreed to honor the referendum, but Southern Sudan faces mutiny and violence on its way toward independence. (Video Source: The Guardian) NTV Kenya takes a look at the challenges that lie ahead for the fledgling nation. “Authorities here will need to think about the huge spending on the military. It is estimated that 60% of revenue goes to salaries for disciplined forces. The Southerners will also be looking for investors to produce essential goods locally. Most of the goods come from the North through the Port of Juba.” The northern Sudan army has started withdrawing its forces from the south - but many former southern militiamen who belong to the northern army refuse to relocate to the north with all their weaponry. At least 41 people have died in clashes. “With all [Sudan Armed Forces] now required to withdraw to the north and the southerners in its ranks disarmed and discharged back to the south, the ex-militia elements are resisting the move. The mutineers also are fighting to keep some of the heavy weaponry in the south - and in their hands." And Kenya’s executive director of the Institute of Policy and Conflict tells ABN Digital not even basic supplies will come easy to the Southern Sudanese. “The competition over access to resources, particularly water, pasture, and also in terms of access to basic livelihoods is one of, going to be the most contested areas. And also we must not forget the vendic relationship between various ethnic groups will also play out because some of them are either economically pastoralist or they are farmers, so how are going to balance these two groups?” One area with an uncertain future is the oil-rich region of Abyei, which was supposed to have its own referendum to pick which country to join. A Joint Integrated Units commander tells the Sudan Tribune - additional forces have been deployed in the region to quell violence. “So the referendum, which should have happened simultaneously with the one last week [in South Sudan], never materialized—and Abyei now stands in a state of dangerous limbo. We are like people stranded in the middle of journey. We are actually like people dropped to the desert or on an island.” But a conflict analyst says Abyei may not be that important in the future. “From 2003 Abyei contributed more than one quarter of Sudan’s total crude oil output. Production volumes have since declined and reports suggest that Abyei’s reserves are nearing depletion." Southern Sudan’s independence is set to take effect in July. *******www.newsy**** “I’m talking about state’s rights, state’s rights, state’s rights. Texans know how to run Texas.” -Texas governor Rick Perry The governor’s words have people across America asking, “Does Texas want to secede?” MSNBC’s Keith Olberman tries to examine the governor’s intent: “Is the governor making too subtle a distinction when it appears that secession is what many of the people listening to him are hearing anyway? “And that’s exactly what this governor is saying.” (MSNBC) FOX News covered a tea party at The Alamo in Texas... where protesters voiced their support… “Listening to things coming out of Texas, I don’t want to be too dramatic, but it almost seems like Texas is looking to secede from the nation”… ends on loud cheering… (FOX News) The statesman**** in Austin takes a different view on the governor’s message – saying it plays well with conservatives – and his re-election bid… (statesman****) “it… appears to have breathed new life into [his] re-election campaign, 3 ½ months into what’s been a rather rough year for him.” Nicholas Kristof, a New York Times columnist posted this on Twitter… (GFX) “Gov. Perry talking about Texas seceding from the Union because of taxes! It's official: he's nuts!” (twitter****) Is it campaign politics or something more?

Transcript by Newsy BY AUSTIN ALONZO You're watching multisource world news analysis from Newsy Sudan is five weeks away from the scheduled start of a referendum to determine the independence of its oil-producing, resource-rich south. The decision could split the country in two and -- if mishandled, spark another period of violence. Southern Sudanese living in the north are headed back home en mass to vote in the referendum, but as the BBC reports, fear for the future is rising. “…people here are worried, and already they are starting to pack up their belongings, pack up everything in their house and prepare to move back down to the south. Some of them just so they can vote in the referendum, some of them are moving for good because they say they’re scared of what could happen in this country if they split in two.” The referendum comes at a time of high political tensions in Sudan. So far, groups in the north and south have failed to reach an agreement on sharing oil revenues and natural resources including millions of acres of fertile land, reserves of gold and Nile River Water. (Video from Al Jazeera) As Al Jazeera reports, southern Sudanese are well aware of the potential for conflict, but those seeking secession say, they aren’t going to back down. “The north has been benefiting from our oil for too long, if they try to steal it from us after we separate, we will fight them. We will even cut the pipelines.” The potential for conflict is very real in the ethnically diverse and resource-rich border region of Abyei (AH-BEE-AY) which lies along the 1956 colonial north-south border. The south claims rights to the region, but the north doesn’t want to concede any more territory to the south. The Christian Science Monitor reports that militants from both sides are pouring into the region - along with southern Sudanese returning home for the referendum. “The effect of these movements, and the increase in population in and around the militarized border area is unpredictable. Africa Confidential reported that Abyei youth returning from Khartoum were beaten at a SAF checkpoint along the way, even citing one incident of rape.” The Voice of America reports, in two weeks -- more than two million voters have registered in the south. It reports, the military build up and roving militants could interfere with voting, but plenty of other problems could keep the election from starting on time. VOA reports with less than 40 days till the election, the government has not found a company to design and print the ballot. January’s referendum could be just the first attempt to divide Sudan. Cairo’s Al Ahram Weekly predicts the volatile Darfur region could be the next to secede. “Darfur remains a hot spot where talk of using arms to topple the regime remains current. Observers also say that Darfur residents may also demand self-determination if a solution for the area is not found.” The referendum vote is scheduled for January 9th, but many close to the situation say violence could break out before then.
